My starship acquisition ambitions right now involve the Intrepid class, the Sovereign class, and the D'deredex class for my Romulan character.
One thing I've noticed while perusing the ships for the Federation is that the number of weapons seems to be capped at eight (typically four in front and four aft).

Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
Avengers are pretty nice ships and I do like that they've got blast shutters the close over the windows and parts of the drive glow. Someone's put thought into that.
I'm currently puttering around in the Guardian Cruiser. I wasn't a big fan of the look of it to start with, but it's growing on me. Maybe if that middle impulse engine was gone, though...
Edit: Yep. 8 weapons is the limit. At the top level, some tactical ships have 5/3 arrangements, most cruisers have 4/4, escorts 4/3 and science 3/3.

I think I prefer the four/four arrangement. I like the idea of my firepower being equally effective if I'm running away.

Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
Running as a tactical captain with no particular desire to make lolDPS builds I tend to have 3 forward beams and the Gravy torpedo, along with 3 aft beams and the cutting beam. It's tried and true and has got me through content quite effectively. I tend to drop off a torpedo spread on the way in and then get to broadsiding while punting torpedoes if they happen to cross in front of me or I turn far enough.

Nimbus is interesting. It had a Tatooine/space Afghanistan vibe.
I'm up to level 27 now. I should be getting an Intrepid soon if I recall correctly.

There seems to an enormous jump in price from mark XI to mark XII technologies on the exchange. I've recently been making a killing trading my surplus mark XII weapons I pick up

Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
Easily explained. XII used to be the highest mark that exists, and is still the highest mark that frequently drops. XI was never maximum mark for any rank, ever, and as such is kind of crap by comparison if you're trying to get the most out of your ship. Odd-numbered marks always suffer that to an extent. XI vs XII has the legacy of max-mark layered on top of that.

Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
I think Delta Alliance still gives mark 12 gear (sorry for the arabic number, I'm mildly dislexic so the "Is" in the roman numbers cause bit of an issue) that you then upgrade to 14 (the current max rank).
and IIRC the Intrepid was a lvl 30 ship (called science ship in the shop IIRC).
btw some items seems really cheap to update, while others seem quite expensive. I'm currently upgrading the 8472-counter command gear I got and the console you got from the mission was really easy to update. (well technically I've not updated it yet as I didn't have Dil to get the last 2% or so at bar)

Be warned, if you want to buy the C-Store Intrepid, suck it up and get the bundle. Do not buy the ships individually. Otherwise you'll never get that nice Voyager interior. The Romulan Republic wrote:My starship acquisition ambitions right now involve the Intrepid class, the Sovereign class, and the D'deredex class for my Romulan character.

I was planning not to buy it at all but simply get it as my choice next time I was eligible for a free ship/got promoted.RogueIce wrote:Be warned, if you want to buy the C-Store Intrepid, suck it up and get the bundle. Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
Well, I found out what happened to the ships I had tried to acquire that didn't show up in my list of available ships. Apparently they ended up in my inventory and I had to go to my damn inventory and select them before I could use them. I found this out while I was digging through my inventory trying to find things to sell so I could buy better stuff for my Akira.
This normal, or a bug?
Edit: More positively, I know have my Intrepid, having attained the rank of Captain.

Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
Perhaps this is a sign that you should take more interest in things that randomly show up in your inventory, and perhaps your inventory in genera.
In all seriousness, they've changed how ships are awarded more than once, so I couldn't even say for sure, but 'maybe I should check my inventory' should be an early step when you can't find something you were theoretically given.

Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
Perhaps. At any rate, at least I have my Constitution and Intrepid now. And Q is back at Earth's space dock for the 5th. anniversary celebration.
I'm thinking that now that I have a decent rank and good ships, I might try getting into multiplayer combat a bit.
Edit: The strange thing is that my second ship and fourth ship both seem to have ended up in the inventory (or my overflow bag) but my third ship, my Akira, simply ended up in my list of ships that were available for selection right away.

anyway there's 3 basic types of group content, red alerts/signal contacts where people can join and leave at random, PvE queues that are PvE group content and PvP queue that's the same for PvP (though from what I've heard it's quite unpopular).
there's also 3 possible difficulty levels, normal that's avaible as soon as you get access to the PvE queue, Advanced that you get access at level 50 and Elite that you unlock at max level. (it should be noted that you change the difficulty of solo missions as well but I wouldn't recomend that for new players). the PvE queue can be quite random when it comes to the quality of players (though normal difficulty is also quite forgiving).

Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
For scoring 1 awesome piece of gear; I suggest re-running the mission previously mentioned here "A step between the stars” where you acquire the Ancient Omni-Directional Anti-Proton Array. Pick up that array again... Act like you are going to upgrade it, as in place it into the upgrade slot. It will become MKII instead of the infinite sign it starts with. You will now be able to equip both Ancient Anti-Proton Omni-Directional arrays. DO NOT place both Omni-Directional Arrays into the upgrade slot otherwise the "May equip only one" will still apply.
If you would like I can create some equipment up to about lvl 8 before it becomes to resource expensive. I recently rolled 4 Characters up to 50 for dilithium mining purposes.

So, I may have had some Lobi lying around. These then mysteriously became Shiny Things for Q. In conclusion: Broadside mounts are perfect.
Looks like it's going to be rather tough, especially now I've got my hands on the Guardian's trait.

So I sold some master keys I had lying around on the exchange the other day. Raised about 25 million energy credits, which is an order of magnitude more than I've ever had before. Then I bought lots of mk XIII (13) antiproton arrays, and holy shit.
Question: Are bouts of maniacal cackling normal as I watch my enemies get shredded into oblivion?

Re: Should I try out Star Trek Online?
getting dropped in like into an STF you've never done before can be a bit of shock.
getting the frequency re-modulator is pretty much vital if you want to fight the borg on the ground. since only kinetic and physical attacks cannot be adapted to.
Like in canon trek you get a limited number shots before the borg adapt (though more generous then canon since you can't consistently 1 shot borg in-game), there is a trait in the Task Force Omega that makes it so that it's harder for the borg to adapt to your weapons and the 3 peice set bonus from the MACO ground set gives you a integrated Frequency Remodulator allowing you to remodulate your weapons without needing to take ground item slot (it's also faster, allowing to shoot more).
the weapon I use for my UFP and KDF chars is the MACO/HG weapon, a sniper rifle for MACO and a pulseweave (read energy shotgun) with an integrated granade laucher for the Honor Guard.
