I always wanted to write a spam program

Since I only have a 64kbps upload, I shouldnt be able to do a DOS attack (server can upload at 128kps, downloads are typicially faster)

At the moment I'm just getting it to post new topics (Also testing how long you can make the msg, so far 64kb works )

Then I'll move onto making it replying & running searches.

edit: Looks like the largest size a message can be is 67,173 bytes.

Have you considered Oracle 9i as an option? MySql is really limited with limited resources. Oracle powers some of the most powerfull databases in the world.

You seem to have overestimated my budget.

With MySql, you get open code and no promises, no real support, and no real upgrades.

Yes, yes, yes, and no. They do routinely upgrade their software, although it's obviously not up to the standard of big-time $$ware like Oracle.

No, I'm not being snotty.. I'm an Oracle DBA and I believe that it's one of the BEST databases there is....

OK, here's the deal: I can probably speed this thing up by nuking search functions for older posts. In other words, you can do a search but it won't turn up any results from the first, say, 100k posts to the board. How would people feel about that kind of solution?

You post appears to be a contradiction. Would we be unable to search the first 100K or only be able to search the first 100K?

Sounds fine to me. Then again, I rarely need to use search.
