Looking forward to this, myself. District 9 was awesome, though I admit it's the only work of Blomkamp's I've seen.
Thoughts?

I thought District 9 was pretty good. But as I recall he also made Elysium and as I recall it kind of sucked.

Yeah, a lot of people are bringing that up. I dunno, though I've yet to see it, it may just be the old 'second album' problem flaring up. As ever, I remain the Eternal Optimist.

Re: Confirmed: Blomkamp to direct Alien sequel.
Elysium sucked completely, but because the director was just trying to make another District 9 with zero effort on a script or really thinking about it at all. It wasn't badly directed or produced for what it was.

Yeah, Elysium came off as a half-assed effort, to be quite frank. It had a decently interesting plot and a reasonable cast, but nobody really put much effort into it, so it came off as entirely too laid-back, simplistic and apathetic.
His general visual style is fairly interesting, though, and IIRC there was some very intriguing concept art that came out a while ago. So if they follow that route I could be very down with it.

Well, he has a new movie out around now doesn't he? I guess I can go watch that to see if he can score two out of three.
Re: Confirmed: Blomkamp to direct Alien sequel.
It's not like he could drag this franchise any further into the gutter than it is already. Kind of like when Abrams took over Star Trek - any competently made film would have to count as step up...

Isn't that Chappie? I understand it's OK, although I haven't seen it yet...The Romulan Republic wrote:Well, he has a new movie out around now doesn't he? I guess I can go watch that to see if he can score two out of three.

New Aliens movie in the works
Hopefully better than the Resurrection
linkUm…," starts an Instagram post from writer-director-produer Neill Blomkamp, "So I think it's officially my next film. #alien"
The post’s image is a painting by Swiss surrealist H.R. Giger in the artist’s famous airbrush style, of the movie Alien’s eponymous alien in profile, toothed tongue extended, leg raised like a dancer.
Though the Instagram post is a little light on detail, last night Variety confirmed that the message it appears to be sending—that Blomkamp will be helming a new film in the Alien franchise—is correct. Citing "sources," Variety says that Blomkamp and 20th Century Fox have indeed closed a deal for a new Alien movie and that the movie will be separate from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus 2 (which is still being written while Ridley Scott films the movie version of Andy Weir’s The Martian).
There are no solid details at this point as to what Blomkamp’s Alien film might look like and whether it will be a "reboot" of the franchise, a sequel, or something in between. Previous rumors about a new Alien movie indicated that series star Sigourney Weaver might be attached; there is no word right now about whether Weaver is involved in Blomkamp’s project. With the ink on the deal still wet, there’s also no leaked script and no real solid pre-production efforts to spy out.
Enlarge / Who's got two thumbs and votes that we take off and nuke the site from orbit? This guy.

However, for an indication of what kind of story might be lurking in the mind of the 35-year old South African sci-fi auteur, one need look no further than the Alien concept art Blomkamp posted in early January—concept art which features Weaver’s Ellen Ripley (in one image wearing an explosive-laden suicide vest and in another encased in some kind of alien-esque suit) and Michael Biehn’s Corporal Dwayne Hicks (with one side of his face disfigured Phantom of the Opera-style after the acid splash he took at the end of Aliens).
Considering that Hicks was unceremoniously killed off-screen during the initial moments of Alien 3 in 1992, it appears likely that Blomkamp’s plans—at least at this stage—are for a Superman Returns-esque "midquel," slotting the new movie into the middle of the existing canon after Aliens and dismissing Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, much as Superman Returns was a direct sequel to 1978’s Superman II and ignored the remaining (bad) movies in the franchise.
With luck, if the deal does result in a finished film, it won’t fall victim to the growing trend in Hollywood of Bowdlerizing blockbuster movies in order to achieve a "PG-13" rating (a trend that has apparently claimed this summer’s Terminator Genisys as its latest victim). Blomkamp’s past two releases—District 9 and Elysium—have both merited "R" ratings and his latest film, Chappie, has also garnered the same rating. It’s difficult to imagine a PG-13-rated Alien movie, and fortunately Blomkamp is unafraid to hold the camera on unpleasant doings—something that will definitely be necessary in a film about monsters that explode out of your chest.
There is as of yet no release date for the film, but we wouldn't expect anything earlier than the end of 2016.

...literally, on the front page, there's two threads right below this that say 'new Aliens movie'. You don't even have to search.

Are you saying that Abrams' versions suck, or that the series had already sunk so low that any competent director like Abrams could make improvements?streetad wrote:It's not like he could drag this franchise any further into the gutter than it is already. Re: Confirmed: Blomkamp to direct Alien sequel.
*I don't if that's what he is saying but I have to agree with it regardless. No matter your issues with NuTrek you have to agree that the new films are most certainly better made, and better directed than at least the last three or four old trek films. I do suppose that Star Trek First Contact could be considered a toss up because to be frank I do kind of enjoy that one.Borgholio wrote:Are you saying that Abrams' versions suck, or that the series had already sunk so low that any competent director like Abrams could make improvements?
*You know now that I'm thinking about it only three of the old Trek films, 2,4 and 8 were actually, well, good movies.
*The views stated are a personal opinion.

Be fair, 6 was quite good as well.gigabytelord wrote: *You know now that I'm thinking about it only three of the old Trek films, 2,4 and 8 were actually, well, good movies.
But y'know, when the old trek movies were bad they were really bad.

Yeah I suppose I'll give you that. For some reason I was mixing The Undiscovered Country with the The Final Frontier. OH GOD.Vendetta wrote:Be fair, 6 was quite good as well.

Re: Confirmed: Blomkamp to direct Alien sequel.
Naturally 2, 4, and 6 were good. 1 was boring but wasn't a bad film in itself, same goes for 3. 5 was the only one that truly did suck, IMO.

ST1's only true "sin" was its dreadfully slow pace I mean the story was ok in and of itself, not great but not bad either.

Alien is one of the best sci-fi horror movies ever made.
Aliens is one of the best sci-fi action/horror movies ever made.
The rest of them really didn't accomplish anything of note. And Prometheus was such a wasted opportunity to do a prequel.
Judging from what is known so far, it seems like Clone-Ripley and Hicks might be making a return. Colonial Marines is considered canon, which would explain why Hicks is still alive (though the game itself was terrible).
IMO it would be far better if they simply ignored Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection entirely. You could have Ripley, Hicks Newt and what's left of Bishop survive and make it back home. They part ways, and many years pass by uneventfully (would would explain why the characters have aged) before Hicks and Ripley are drawn into the events of this film. While it might be a bit of a stretch, it'd still be a helluva lot better than what we got in Alien 3.
Or perhaps it would be better if they simply made a movie version of Alien Isolation? IMO though the game had it flaws it did prove that the Xenomorph can still be a deadly, terrifying creature when properly handled.
EDIT: Plus, I also like how they tried their absolute best to make the game look and feel like the first Alien. It might not have been perfect, but at least you could tell that they actually cared about what they were doing.

Why do Ripley, Hicks or Newt have to be in it at all?

Re: Confirmed: Blomkamp to direct Alien sequel.
The slow pace is the root cause of sin, but not the actual sin. Rather a lot of screentime in TMP is taken up with extended FX shots intercut with long sequences of people looking at the FX shot. Not doing anything, just looking at the FX shot the audience just spent a minute watching do nothing and will spend the next minute watching still do nothing.Lord Revan wrote:ST1's only true "sin" was its dreadfully slow pace I mean the story was ok in and of itself, not great but not bad either.
That's not "slow pace", that's "fucking incompetent moviemaking". It's a fundamental failure in adapting the original TV pilot script they had into a feature length piece, which also showed its ugly head in the story of the very first theatrical Star Trek movie not actually being about the characters of Star Trek. Sure they were in it, but it wasn't about them, nothing that happened required those characters to be there because it was adapted from a script intended to launch completely different characters.
Re: Confirmed: Blomkamp to direct Alien sequel.
I don't think they have to be, nor perhaps should they be, but that's what being teased at. Or at least that's what the director was initially thinking.Bob the Gunslinger wrote:Why do Ripley, Hicks or Newt have to be in it at all?

Ironically, Elysium basically had the same plot as the anime Battle Angel Alita - you have your ground-based society, where all the dregs live, and you have you sky-city, where all the wealthy/elite live, and who have great medical technology.

No. This would not work.IMO it would be far better if they simply ignored Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection entirely. 1) The romantic tension between Ripley and Hicks was present in the photons projected from the screen (I am too young to have seen Aliens in theaters, so the photons are projected directly to my eyes) and implanting themselves in my mirror neurons. There would have to be some external reason they would part ways, and they would likely do the long distance thing. Maybe they break up, but its not going to be a "Well, see you on the flip side" sort of thing.
2) Newt was calling Ripley "mommy" at the end of that movie and this was obviously reciprocated. They very clearly had the mom-daughter thing going on.

Hicks is part of the Colonial Marines and could simply receive orders that would post him far away, Newt could have relatives on Earth that would lay claim on her since her parents died leaving Ripley once again alone.Alyrium Denryle wrote:No. This would not work.IMO it would be far better if they simply ignored Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection entirely.
