linkMike Day is training for his first triathlon. Day will be in Florida on April 12th running in the half Ironman Race. He’ll be representing the Carrick Brain Centers based in Dallas, TX.
Day was a patient at Carrick following his career in the Navy SEALs. He was diagnosed with PTSD after he was involved in a gunfight eight years ago in Iraq.
On April 6th, 2007, Day and his SEAL team caught up with Al-Qaeda fighters in a town near Fallujah, Iraq. Day was the first one into a room with three enemy fighters who were waiting.
They opened fire hitting him 27 times. Eleven of the shots hit his body armor, the other 16 wounded him. One of the terrorists threw a grenade less than 10-feet away from him, exploding and knocking him unconscious.
Day says about a minute later, he woke up still in the middle of the close-quarter firefight. He pulled out his handgun and took down two more of the enemy before the fighting stopped.
Miraculously, Day got up and walked to the medical helicopter and 72 hours later he was stateside being treated for his wounds.
In the course of 16 days in the hospital, Day lost 55 pounds but after those 16 days, he was discharged.. Day was awarded the Purple Heart. He has also earned the Silver and Bronze Star along with a dozen other medals from his 20 years in the SEALs.
Now Day has a new mission– he’s trying to raise money for Carrick, which specializes in working with wounded warriors like Day and dependent children who have suffered severe brain injuries. Day says the center is on the cutting edge of brain care and adds that most of their treatments are not yet covered by insurance companies.
Day hopes to raise $75,000 for the center and awareness about the good the center is doing. If you would like to help Day accomplish his mission click on the link to his page

...wow, that's a misleading title to this thread. It's a nice feel-good article, but the title makes it look like a gory murder...
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Indeed, a simple addition of 'who was shot 27 times is now' wouldn't go amiss for the sake of people's blood pressure if nothing else.
Big kudos to this brave bastard, I wish him all the best.

Yeah, I've always taken the subtext of the Birther movement to be, "The rules don't count here! This is different! HE'S BLACK! BLACK, I SAY! ARE YOU ALL BLIND!?

Seriously. I thought this was going to be about some seal that happened to be a random violent crime target while he was working out.Elheru Aran wrote:...wow, that's a misleading title to this thread. It's a nice feel-good article, but the title makes it look like a gory murder...

Damn, dude took almost a full magazine worth of bullets and a freaking hand grenade and he was still fighting. Thats pretty impressive. Both impressive that modern body armor can soak up 11 shots without failing (I always thought body armor was useless after 1 or two shots) and the dude soaked up 16 more without failing. Guy should have played the lottery after that because clearly he had some once in a lifetime luck going on.
I hope he raises the money he's trying to and them some. Brain injury is one of those things that affects our guys pretty badly and certainly needs some more attention and money raised to help out.

That is pretty crazy outright. He shows stomach wounds in the video, so I assume the armor did fail under such concentrated fire. After he won all his man points for all eternity.
All NIJ body armor standards are for a 3 round group on both the soft and hard armors, except the most extreme test for .30-06 or 7.62x54R AP ammo which is a single shot on the plate. The interceptor plates the army uses though have been tested to stop eight non grouped 5.56mm rounds, and still stopped a 7.62mm tungsten round in the center. As long as the hits are spread out even soft body armor can stop a lot of projectiles. Generally the lower the weight of armor the more sensitive its going to be to multiple hits.
Now how he survived the other 16 bullets? Fucking amazing hit placement and a refusal to die.
