Great, another comic franchise going for brown and sepia and grimdark.
A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. Leonard Nimoy.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

Despite my joy at the grief this causes with a black Johnny Storm, with some nerds unable to wrap there head around how a white woman could have a black brother, I REALLY could care less about this movie. I don't hate it, though it looks dumb enough to hate, nor do I have even the slightest intention of watching it. The older FF movie was fine (I never saw the sequel after the bad reviews for it), but I could see the need for a reboot. I don't see the need for a darker and grittier Nolan'esq, hip and young reboot though.

Minor nerd rant incoming. I've never been a huge fan of the FF but I've read some of the comics and again saw the movie. So I know the Fantastic Four are supposed to be...........fantastic. Its a stretchy dude, a flaming but still quite hetero dude, an invisible chick, and some dude made of rock fighting some dude in a suit of armor. Dark and gritty isn't really fucking part of it. Of course if they can make fucking Superman dark and gritty (and shitty) I supposed they can with anything. I'm still waiting for a Plastic Man or Tick grim and gritty movie.

But thats not even the problem with this movie. Grim and gritty done right can be interesting, though when every movie is doing it even interesting movies will be boring. No, this movie just sounds badddddddddddd dd dd d ddddd dd d. With such lovely crap as Dr Doom not being a Doc but instead a VERY anti-social blogger and hacker who uses Doom as his screen name and some alternate dimension crap (because thats realistic as opposed to space radiation), it just seems like this movie is a poorly written mess.

Ah well, it means a movie I don't have to care about. Which is good because for once there is actually quite a few movies, tv shows, and video games that I'm interested in so my schedules already quite full for the foreseeable future.

This is being made purely to keep the rights of the franchise with Fox, nothing more. I predict it will be Fox's TASM. Nothing I have seen about this film has me the least bit interested.
Not the laughably forced grimdark atmosphere.
Not the way they're portraying Doom, one of Marvel's best and most iconic villains.
Not the way they're aping Interstellar in the ad campaign.
Not the way Fox bullied Den of Geek and other sites into removing material to do with the film that actually didn't look terrible (a stand-in prop for The Thing)

That pretty much sums up my view.

Except I actually own the the "older" FF movie and its sequel (got the second really cheap, probably due to low interest). Bright colors, doesn't take itself too seriously, flash-bang special effects... that's what it's supposed to be in my mind. I was fine with it. Sure, it could have been better but not every movie will hit it out of the ballpark.

And considering in real life we have a black president with an Asian sister and a white mother the damn "nerds" can just get over themselves. Idris Elba, Samuel L. Jackson, and a bunch of other non-white actors have demonstrated that you change the ethnicity of comic book characters without negative impact and at times with excellent results. The new Battlestar Galactica showed you can change the gender of a major character, too (Starbuck) without disaster. People, get the fuck over it. Let's cast actors based on ability rather than skin color except in the very rare instance where that actually matters (which, really is almost never - the exception that comes to mind is Othello, which I've heard has also been cast with a predominantly black cast and a white Othello on stage, which emphasizes the point there is racial difference/conflict, not the precise colors involved).

you mean, a fun, decent take on the character that was better than the previous version? Awesome.

Yeah, yeah, YMMV. But I missed out on what I eventually thought was a decent film for exactly those reasons.

Hah, you amuse me ;)
I mean a lazy, lowest common denominator rehash that makes staggeringly inept creative decisions, mostly. The possibility remains that I'm wrong and it'll be a masterpiece, but my hope is faint.

Intriguing. Can anyone tell if they've actually left any of the canon origin story in there, though?

That looks absolutely shite. Another one not to waste time on.
So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.

Imperial Battleship, halt the flow of time!

If so, why does Fox want to keep the rights ?

Wouldn't it be more profitable to just let the rights lapse and use the money on something else ?

I don't know, it's fucking Fox. They all drink a pint of kitten blood every morning, for chrissakes, how am I supposed to know how their gears turn? :P

They don't have to make a lot of money to make it worth the cost of not having to lease rights back after Marvel gets them back and makes a movie like Avengers with them, because the cost at that point is effectively "infinite," and the cost of keeping them now is "make another dumb hero movie on which you will probably at least make your money back."

Man of Steel wasn't a great movie, but still made $42M profit on $600M of cost. 8% profit isn't bad, considering the practically Pascalian wager of letting the rights lapse.

From what I've read and seen it is going to be based more on the Ultimate Fantastic Four than the original. They are meant to be younger, and the relationships between them are adjusted a bit. Plus, it looks like Sue and Johnny's father will be in this one like he is in the comics. If it follows the comics Sue will also be an exceptional scientist in her own right, a biologist.
