What is it with your fascination with Japan?
I can look through other forums on this board and find multiple posts and topics on Japan, anime, etc.
Let me tell you, my finace's is Japanese and we go to Japan a few times per year. My children are going to be half Japanese. That being said let me say that I DON'T UNDERSTAND this fascination with this culture. I love to travel and I love Japan, but not for the same reasons.
What is it about anime that fascinates you? What is it about Japan, in general, that fascinates you? What's the big deal about Japan "backing the U.S?"
Please, enlighten me.

Japan doesn't interest me in the slightest, if that's any consolation.

Same here. I don't get what's so special about all this anime stuff, just poorly drawn/animated cartoons if you ask me. *dons Flame Shield +5*
EDIT: Besides, I'm fascinated with European culture, so

I Dunno...I guess people just think it such an odd culture.
Strangely enough it's just that another culture...who knows what the weirdo fascination is...though many people dig sushi.

I like a lot of anime, and I love Akira Kurosawa, but as far as the modern culture goes, it pisses me off most of the time. There are all sorts of weird motherfucking social taboos, plus that crazy devotion to their jobs.
Plus, Japanese porn usually has either a) bukkake, which is odd to say the least, b) bondage, which I'm not in to, c) the woman ALWAYS loudly squeals and winces anytime somebody touches her, which is annoying as hell, or c) tentacles, which is beyond wrong.

And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

As I heard from my friend who reads some site all about wierdo Japanese culture, the tentacle thing has something to do with them not being allowed to show penii, or something.Robert Treder wrote:I like a lot of anime, and I love Akira Kurosawa, but as far as the modern culture goes, it pisses me off most of the time. Bukkake is when a female (sometimes bound and/or gagged) has a bunch of guys come on her. They usually do it on her mouth, face, and hair, and she holds it in her mouth, spits it out, and plays with it in her hands. It's quite strange.
And you have a point about not being able to show penises; a lot of Japanese porn (but not a majority, I wouldn't say) has the penis pixelated, while everything else is shown just fine. Or sometimes in pornographic mangas, there will be a tiny black bar placed over a part of the head of the penis, as though they're being forced to do it to meet some regulation, but they're not exactly worried about really concealing anything.

That's the most foul thing I've ever heard. Really, I feel a bit ill.
Ah. There's also the men buying soilded underwear- which also strikes me as quite foul. And you have a point about not being able to show penises; a lot of Japanese porn (but not a majority, I wouldn't say) has the penis pixelated, while everything else is shown just fine. Of course- it's just as fringe there as it is fringe in the West, I guess.Superman wrote:Just to let you guys know, most people at my university that are from Japan, like my fiance', think that anime is sort of geeky.

Well, that's because it is. But that doesn't change the fact that Japanese and Americans are crazy about it.Superman wrote:Just to let you guys know, most people at my university that are from Japan, like my fiance', think that anime is sort of geeky.

You know, a couple of years ago my fiance' got sick while we were in Japan. We went to a small clinic and she made an appointment, but while we were there I noticed about 20 children playing in the waiting room. If any of you have seen my pic you know that I am a body builder (I stand 6'3"), and when I entered the room two kids ran right into my legs, looked up at my face, dropped their jaws and ran off. About that time "Sailor Moon" came on the TV that was playing. Every kid in that room stopped what they were doing and ran over to the TV. It was like they were hypnotized by that show. All of them shut up and gazed at the TV.
I guess "Sailor Moon" is pretty popular for a kid's show.

I'm neither a fan of Japanese porn, but on the other hand nearly all porn tends to be quite crappy.
To get away from the porn discussion, let me decribe how I was introduced to Manga/Anime. (Manga = comics, Anime = animations). I was last winter bored of Sci-fi/Fantasy, the only active authors who was on my buy the latest book as hardcover list was Terry Pratchett & G.R.R. Martin (I hadn't heard about Weber yet). Since I was bored, I started to look for fanfiction and found an intresting crossover with a Manga/Anime series. I went to my local big bookstore and found just that series and another one intresting in the comics section, result: I was hooked.
And why did it get my intrest? Because unlike American & European series, which focus on either humor or action, I also found a focus on relationships between characters on a scale that is missing in most western comics. There is a shallowness in the typical American comic when it comes to relationships that probably comes the target age group and from the fundie attitude of "make war, not love" which seems to run deeply into the American culture. And about European comics, they are either quite good childrens comics which lacks a focus on relationships or postmodern bullcrap.

I'm not a big fan of Japanese culture (which I often find stupid and desperately primitive) but I love anime. There's several reasons for that, the primary of which is that anime is often far more interesting than its western counterpart - feature-length cartoons, such as they are, and most of it Disney: soft, pastel, recycled crap spoonfed to hyperactive children.
On the flip-side, I'd generally prefer a Western comic book over a manga, since the former is usually a lot better drawn than the latter.
PREEMPTIVE WARNING: I know that the anime-heads are going to be around sometime (you know who you are). Keep it civil.

I'm a lot more interested in Vietnamese culture than Japanese. The girls are hotter, too.

My only real fascination with Japan just comes from having studied Japanese in college, and yes, I watch anime. Anime isn't "fringe" in Japan, it's kiddie. Most Japanese children, when they hit their early teens drop anime in favor of manga which every adult has no shame in reading. The porn is rather odd, granted and the social mores are a lot different. The soiled underwear is a new thing for me, the last weird thing I heard about was men buying used underwear from schoolgirls. That one relates back to Japanese ideas about the ideal woman. They like their women innocent and what is more innocent than a girl in those school uniform. How many guys in here are not turned on by the whole idea of a woman wearing a Catholic schoolgirl uniform and be honest.
