A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

Re: More US students coming to Germany to study for free
I was quite surprised that it takes so little on average to pay off free tuition. 2 years of work pays off the tuition if everyone stayed? I suppose the assumption is that people who have just left university with a good degree/job are earning lots, paying lots of tax but consume very little in government services and will go back to their home country prior to claiming a pension or starting a family in many cases."Even if people don't pay tuition fees, if only 40% stay for five years and pay taxes we recover the cost for the tuition and for the study places so that works out well."

If I spoke a word of German I'd seriously consider it myself.

Not really necessary as prerequisite - lots of courses are in English, most Germans speak English pretty well, and you'll get German lessons, as well.Zaune wrote:If I spoke a word of German I'd seriously consider it myself.
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

Weird. I was just looking at German PhD options earlier today.

Humans are such funny creatures. We are selfish about selflessness, yet we can love something so much that we can hate something.

Of course if you show this to Republicans, they'll whine and bitch about unfair taxes to pay for lazy students. Seriously, if this program is still around when I have college age kids, I'll certainly look into it for them.

If I had some means to actually support myself over there and if I could get a Visa I'd seriously consider it. As it is, yeah, probably not going to happen.

With my academic record I wouldn't bet too much on that. The only qualification I have that's worth the paper it's written on is an A+ Certification, and even that's seven years out of date.Thanas wrote:We do have easily accessible scholarships for that, provided you are a good student.

My GPA was actually pretty solid but I went and fucked that up with a Chinese class and an attempt to finish my degree in New Orleans.

Some jobs require English only and since you are a EU citizen, you will be considered for these jobs without discrimination.Zaune wrote:It is if you don't have parents paying for everything and need to find a job over there.LaCroix wrote:Not really necessary as prerequisite - lots of courses are in English, most Germans speak English pretty well, and you'll get German lessons, as well.
But... Make sure you that look for such jobs before the idiot otherwise known as Cameron leaves the EU and you end up being in the same position as all non-EU "third rate" people against whom a system of perfectly legal discrimination is put in place.

Huh. Wonder if a History degree would fly. I don't know how well a German university would be able to accommodate a deaf student who doesn't lip-read, though...

What about anything software development-related?

Hmm. What about the Gesellenprüfung in Woodworking? Or there's the Bachelor-Studiengang Holz im Bauwesen? http://www.fh-rosenheim.de/en/technolog ... rs-degree/
How do you suck in accommodating disabilities? I have heard that lip-reading is one of the primary resources for deaf people in Germany due to there being less phonetic difficulties with that language, so I imagine there are few sign language interpreters...

No idea. Look up the websites in the BBC article.Zaune wrote:What about anything software development-related?
Not familiar with either of them.Elheru Aran wrote:Hmm. What about the Gesellenprüfung in Woodworking? Or there's the Bachelor-Studiengang Holz im Bauwesen? http://www.fh-rosenheim.de/en/technolog ... rs-degree/
I have never met one in all of academia and don't know of any university which provides an interpreter. And we suck because we don't accomodate them a lot. Best they can hope for is some better access to university rooms (but given that most buildings were built in the 50s-70s don't count on it) and some easier exams, but there is nobody on hand to help them with the course materials iirc. But usually any university will have an office dediated to this which will know more, I personally just wouldn't expect much. We are not a very accommodating society. How do you suck in accommodating disabilities? Re: More US students coming to Germany to study for free
That's a shame. It's pretty unlikely that I'd be able to do it anyway, given that I've got a family here, but that would have helped.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.
Re: More US students coming to Germany to study for free
Well, I found a couple of strong candidates. If I can somehow solve the twin problems of not speaking a word of German and being less than appealing to employers even before you factor in how much my country has pissed off the rest of Europe... this might be doable.
