Re: Housebuilding in Finland
Picked this up to power my jointer/planer, a 2.2kw 3-phase Asea motor, most likely made before WW2:
It's open frame, but I was told when asking around that it's mostly an issue with single phase motors and their complicated starting circuits, just hose this one out with air now and then. It also works, the bearings are in better shape than most of my other newer motors and it runs almost silently. I think it exuded a higher build quality despite it's appearance, than a modern sealed motor. I hope the windings have a lot of life left though, it seemed to work just fine for the couple of minutes I tested it. Don't have a megger so I can make sure.
I'd like to strip and refinish the exterior as well. It's such a cool motor, and it weighs more than my 4kw motor that was made in the 60s/70s.

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
Forgot to take some pictures of the yard but it's quite different looking after all that gravel has been spread out.
Oh well the renovation of the motor is coming along
There's a crack through at the rear that needs to be welded, I know of a guy who can weld cast iron so we'll see.
Also acquired a jointer plane, made around 1900
And found a stanley handyman combo square for a couple of bucks, derusted and painted it black, inch only, weird to find that in Finland:
Made some progress on my impeller project too (pieces just loosely arranged)

Nice plane, is that a Record, Stanley, or indigenous clone?

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
It is from what I was told an Ohio Tools plane, which was then branded for some small time Minnesotan hardware store, where the plane was bought and brought back to Finland some unknown time later. It apparently has little resale value in america because it has a tapered blade and doesn't work properly with regular replacement blades. But this one has been modified to accept them by a guy I know who is pretty damn good at old machines and the plane performs wonderfully.

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
Impeller build proceeding again.
A new disc had to be made and with wider grooves, I epoxied the vanes in place with slow setting epoxy, I also screwed them in with two screws per vane from the other side. Then I trimmed the edges with my bandsaw circle cutting jig to make it proper round. I'm also considering putting construction adhesive around where the vanes meet the plywood and smear it out with a finger, to create a softer surface, fill in any gaps and to add even more strength.
I got a pretty serious angle on these vanes too... it sorta looks like an airfoil impeller...

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
Balancing the impeller. Puty it on a big ball bearing that's a bit bigger than the diameter of the bore, I added and removed weight until it laid flat.
I'd put it rocking a little bit and it would take 10 minutes for it to stop so I'd go away and do something else and then how level it lay when finished, that to me would indicate where the weight was greater and less.
Eventually I got it to the point where the water level stopped at these readings, quite centered though perhaps not exactly, good enough?
Actually the reason I managed this was I removed the piece of metal I had between the piece of wood and the bearing, that allowed the bearing to dimple the wood and that added friction so it was possible to balance it like this. The stiff and flat piece of metal was important to let the bearing move as freely as possible.

The slight camera angle in that pic makes it seem a bit off-level, but I imagine it is actually right between the lines if you look straight up and down. I'd say you're fine.Eventually I got it to the point where the water level stopped at these readings, quite centered though perhaps not exactly, good enough?

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
Well it blew up, or it tossed a vane and then became unbalanced and that threw the whole motor off the bench and one vane hit a pair of fluorescent tubes and broke them. Good thing I had a 10 meter extension cord and was hiding behind the jointer as I started it.
Turns out the problem was the epoxy, it had made a very weak bond with the plastic so basically only the screws held it in place and I think that might have sufficed, if I had used screws with flat large heads, or washers. As it was the screws where torn right through the disc.
Another problem was that the motor is so powerful and direct started, it sped it up from 0 to 2850rpm in the blink of an eye. a 3-phase soft starting module might be an idea in the long run.
Anyway these heavy plastic vanes where a mistake, accelerating that mass so fast was probably more strenous on the bonds holding them down. I think if I would have used wood glue and wooden vanes from plywood, or MDF as one person did, then I would have had a much stronger bond and a stronger impeller. They are also several times lighter so much less destructive if/when they go flying, they'd probably be contained in the impeller housing.
Still one of the biggest mistakes was testing it wihout the top lid on, it would have greatly strengthened it, but then again I wouldn't have known about the lousy epoxy bond either.

Eh no big, I learned alot from examining it and the new one will be lighter and stronger.
Also Daniel Tiger, this is a coincidence since my fiance doesn't know about that kid show, I only know of it because I overhear american parents online talk about it:
The boys have started a climbing phase, whenever they're given the chance, they will climb, we've had to remove the living room table because it has a glass inlay top, and kitchen step stools because they use them to climb onto counters and tables. Let's hope they're not like me and go break their clavicles.

Ah, the climbing phase. It means that they're a lot more of a handful, but it's also a great chance to see how they grow and learn with the new found freedom.

Another lesson I hope you have learned - when testing any self-made machine with potential for spectacular auto-destruction, KEEP A CAMERA ROLLING!
Otherwise - a project failing spectacular without any injuries is always a valuable lesson for how to improve on it.

A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

I wouldn't dare trying that incase the camera got hit though.
Anyway some pics of the yard as it looks now, this is a big panorama picture so link only

Closeup of the front yard, just waiting for the grass to grow in, and the majority of the lawn is still unseeded and it's just got wild grass growing right now, weathers been to wet to prep the earth so far:

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
Casting a concrete slab infront of my garage:
White stuff is insulation to help protect against frost heaving, i'll have to add more later here around the slab, out to 60cm or so, but I'll do that later.
Also making one for the dumpster too so I can build walls and a roof around it, also insulated and rebar is coming yet:
Hopefully the concrete truck will be here next week.

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
Today has been midsummer eve and that's the biggest holiday this side of christmas in Finland. We spent at it at my parents cottage by the sea. Been snapping pictures of the boys today, starting before they even woke up:
Hmmm... Time to wake up.
David, too:
Having fun with small rocks at the cottage, trying to push them into the grille of cars is something they both do for some reason.
Yeah, no building or anything today, just kids, I even forgot to take pictures of things like the midsummer dinner and whatnot.

glad to see that you up north seemed to have decent weather, down here at south coast it was rather rainy (though it did clear at about 16:00 or so)

Yeah it rained a little and was cloudy before 16:00 here too, and the day before we've had real downpours. But just after dinner the weather cleared up and was real nice. Hardly any mosquitoes either, and they said this was gonna be the year of the insects.

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
The strap, no it's just something we put on when they sleep. Due to their conditions one of their lower (or is it upper?) arm bones, not sure if it's the radial or ulna, is not as developed so their hands tend to wander inwards. To force the arm to grow straighter they have those on when they sleep. They've helped a lot the doctors say, I also think their arms have gotten much better.
Daniel still has a weird left elbow, the doctor said he'd never seen anything like it before and thus didn't know what could be done, he'd talk to some specialists over summer when attending an international convention, said it was like he had two ulnar bones in his forearm.
He can't bend it as much and can't rotate his hand as much, but it's never seemed to be an issue for him.

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
I wouldn't worry about it too much. Kids are pretty adaptable. My little brother broke his arm when he was... 4? 5? Somewhere around there, and it was not set right, so the outer bone of his forearm was kind of in a funny place. Never had it re-set, but almost 20 years later you can't tell and he's never had an issue with it. Your boy being so young, he'll be totally used to working around the occasional required tricky movement. If it becomes an issue, it'll be something specialized like not being able to turn tools in a certain way (say working on a car). But hopefully you and the doctors can work it out so it never does become an issue. They're cute
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Two ulnar bones? Does that mean he doesn't have a radial, or does he have three bones in his arm?

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
Yeah no radial, from what I understand, where the radial bone should be, there's a bone that looks more like the ulna. I am not sure really, I'd have liked to have seen the x-rays. The arm bends and he can rotate the hand so he has use of it and that's the most important bit.

Re: Housebuilding in Finland
You're right, as long as it's functional, there's no cause for alarm. But, it would be interesting to see the Xrays, see where the bones connect to the elbow.
