Yes, especially considering Chinese history is not really taught anyway.

Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? Doesn't they teach it at some of the bigger universities like Freie Universität Berlin? I seem to recall quite a few Chinese Historians working there.
Humans are such funny creatures. We are selfish about selflessness, yet we can love something so much that we can hate something.

Yeah, there are a few ones, but even my university which has the biggest history department in all of Germany doesn't have one dedicated chair for it. Mostly they get lumped in with Eastern history, which is a catch all to deal with everything from Prague to Tokyo. It is quite a shame, but limited resources and all that.

Much like many schools in the US. Ah well. I'd rather do it in Hong Kong anyway.

America's turbocapitalist rag criticizes Germany for abolishing tuition fees? Surely Germany is doing something right.

And the fact that most of the article's commenters are basically telling the author to fuck off is pretty uplifting too.

That article is fucking hilarious. How the heck does this dreck get published? I mean, the argument "We must have tuition because otherwise the poor will not work hard enough to get their degree" is beyond anything.

This guy must be a paid lobby for US colleges.

Unless I misread the original article, German colleges are paid for mainly through taxes right? So in the case of the US college system, I can totally see people demanding tuition so they don't have to pay taxes for some lazy welfare slob to get free education. :wanker:

Hmmm. I can't claim to have perfect knowledge of all the different states, but what is you source?
I figured out what it was, the story was that last October Lower Saxony became the last state to make collage tuition-free. A lot of American outlets covered it as "German Collages Now Free (Even) For Americans/Foreigners", and I did not look any deeper, as I do not speak German very well. I could provide sources if it matters to you.

It's worth mentioning that American public schools used to me almost free (as in, a single summer job could pay for four years tuition), but that changed starting in the 1980's like a lot of the foolish things we have done. Mine at least still is pretty cheap if you are any good, and take advantage of scholarships and the like.

Also, while I cannot speak for any other universities, mine has a couple of professors dedicated to Chinese history, despite the fact that it is primarily a STEM, agriculture, and architecture school.

What is stupid is that almost everyone qualifies for financial aid, especially if they or their family can't significantly contribute to to the tuition fees. So instead of the tuition being payed in the first place by the state, it is payed by the state giving grants to individual students. Though said students are also forced to take out student loans. Have to prop up the banks somewhere.

Looking at the author's comments on another article that was linked, I would guess that he is at an Ivy League payed for by a trust fund.

Meh, we´re pretty bad at keeping foreign talent in the country. Most foreigners either drop out or return to their home country after finishing university.

Oh it is not even banks. Almost no bank does student loans anymore. They are direct federal loans, with the interest accrued looked on as a source of revenue.

One wonders, what that asshat has to say to the scandinavian countries (they have the most content citicents and the highest taxes).

@Salm: We seem to be getting better according to this:
