(CNN)A suicide bombing that has killed more than 100 people in eastern Iraq involved an attacker who lured his victims by selling ice at a busy market ahead of a Muslim holiday, local officials said Saturday.

The death toll in Friday night's attack in Khan Bani Saad rose Saturday to 120, with 160 others injured, said Muthana al Tamimi, the governor of Diyala province.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, one of the deadliest in recent months in Iraq, in a post on Twitter.

The market blast, in a predominantly Shiite area about 35 kilometers (21 miles) north of Baghdad, happened as hundreds were shopping the night before Eid al-Fitr, a joyous Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.

The bomber was posing as an ice seller, and lured hundreds of shoppers to his truck, which was packed with explosives, according to two local police officials.

Among the dead were 14 children and 13 women, al Tamimi said.

Videos posted on social media showed scenes of devastation -- a large fire, and bodies and debris over a wide area. Several multistory buildings appeared to have been heavily damaged.

Daylight revealed a huge crater in the street where the vehicle had exploded.

Sounds low even for them. It is a supposedly pro-Muslim group attacking muslims right before a muslim holiday I think during a muslim holiday season (Ramadan). It would be like, to use madOc's example, Christian extremists attacking Christians out shopping on Christmas eve.

I know nothing should surprise me about the level of brutality that ISIS will stoop to but this does to a degree. I think even AQ and the Taliban will usually try to tone things down during Islamic holidays.

I'm not really surprised. ISIS has made it pretty clear from the start that as far as they are is concerned anyone who is not a direct supporter of ISIS is not Muslim and therefore fair game. They have no problems bombing other Muslims in prayer, so it's not much of a shocker that they'll blow up other Muslims while they are shopping too.

This is an intentional,"Fuck you, we're the extremest extremists!" to groups who tone it down for the holidays. Also, they targeted what they consider the "wrong kind" of Muslims, so totally okay in their book.

They follow a different interpretation of islam, which other muslims may or may not agree with. Unless we want to get into silly No True Scotsman debates which would e.g. exclude everyone who is not some variety of Orthodox from Christianity or anyone except some super conservative enclaves in Israel from Judaism, you can't simply say "Daesh is not muslim at all".

Radical groups tend to not flourish without a of foe to channel all hate and frustration at because without a "satan" to fight they lose most of their justifications to enact radical policies and have to shoulder all popular dissatisfaction themselves.
