Not really new.

Russia has been supplying Assad with plenty of Goodies for a long time as documented by this blog in its "From Russia with Love," series of Articles.

Of late both Putin and Iran have been pouring resources into both Iraq and Syria. They don't like Assad, but Syria is too important to them and they don't have a replacement yet for Assad so they can dump him for someone else. As it is, no side is willing to quit yet.

This was weirdly underreported, I almost suspect it's a false story or something. I don't think Russia can handle both Ukraine and a Syrian adventure right now.

Why not? As far as I know, the Russian commitment in Ukraine is mostly special forces and individuals on "shooting leave," not formed units, and it's not like the Islamic State could do much against significant forces from a quality army. In the field, that is.
