Jedi afterlife?

Post by Lagmonster »

The Jedi themselves have all the makings of a Christian monastic order: They have arrogant blind faith in their abilities, they believe that their faith in the force makes them superior to other people. Yoda's comment of 'don't judge me by my size, because my ally is the force' and Ben's comment of 'If you kill me, I will be more powerful than you' sounds a lot like Christian martyr's claims that God is with them, gives them strength in the face of adversity, and will raise them after death.

We see that the Jedi have a visible afterlife, too, much like the Christian promise of eternity, their faith in the force lets Jedi spirits endure - but is this specific to the Jedi? Or what? And why do only the most powerful, good force users appear as ghosts? Why don't we see fence-sitters like Qui-Gon or powerful evil force users wandering about?

I actually don't have any theories about this.

I've always though the Jedi have more in common with Eastern mysticisms.

Evil force users get an eternity of suffering in the dark side. I got that from somehere in the EU.

I think the glowly spirit thingy might be explained in Ep 3/

The Jedi philosophy is based more around Daoist beliefs than Christian ones, but you are correct in your basic premise. Now, we do not see Qui-Gon, but we do hear him, and if my sources on EpIII are to be believed then he will be making a more substantial appearance later. Remember that Obi-Wan is not a particularly powerful Jedi. He is strong, yes, but he is not even a Jedi Master. He is merely a Knight. I have no theories, either, on why we see who we do, or why Anakin (as Darth) was so surprised when Kenobi disappeared, when he too, later demonstrated the skill.

You know, there are non-Christians that believe their faith makes them superior to others.

Anyway, I never noticed that, but they prove that they have the Force. You did bring up a point.

It's possible that Obi-Wan became a master while he was in hiding and became very powerful like Yoda. Because no Light Side Force users have ever achieved this level of power in the Force, he never saw one disappear like that.

I've heard somewhere that you become a Jedi Master 10 years after becoming a Knight

Incorrect. You have to train an apprentice to the rank of Jedi Knight. That process can take 20+years.
