Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket against Kim Davis

This weekend the gay-hating Westboro Baptist Church is set to picket the office of Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who has refused to put her name on marriage licenses after gay couples petitioned to be married, the church's website says.

Despite its vocal anti-gay agenda, the church believes that Davis should issue marriage licenses to gay couples, saying she has a duty to uphold the laws of God and the laws of man – referring to the oath she swore to the Constitution.

"God will NEVER have Same-Sex Marriage, but he does not require YOU to disobey to deal with this nation," the church wrote on its website, which says picketers will protest Davis's Rowan County Clerk's Office on Sunday morning.

The church's problem with Davis stems from the supposed sins in her personal life, the church said.

Davis was divorced three times and had children out of wedlock before experiencing a spiritual awakening. Since then, the Rowan County Clerk said issuing a marriage license to a gay couple would violate "God's definition of marriage."

"Kim claims that she has lived in proud sin for many years, divorcing and remarrying, not one time or two times," the church said.

Davis has been mostly quiet about her own personal life when it's been brought up; however, she has been seen in public with her husband.

"I am not perfect. No one is," she said in a September statement. "But I am forgiven and I love my Lord and must be obedient to Him and to the Word of God."

That said, it carries substantially more weight than usual, I think, when people like Lindsey Graham or the WBC speak out against Kim Davis.

I've often seen people saying that WBC are doing this for the money. Get people angry enough to do something stupid, sue them, make money from the settlement. I haven't seen any proof, but if that's true then going after Davis makes sense. She showed that she doesn't care what the law is when she started modifying marriage certificates. She probably isn't listening to anyone who has been targeted by WBC before, meaning no-one to stop her doing anything stupid.

Protesting gay marriage in this case would mean WBC going after groups they have targeted before. Or, if they want to target individuals, going after the Supreme Court justices who made the decision. Making the chances of getting the response they want far less likely than going after Davis.

It makes perfect sense from a trolling perspective. We're all giving them attention right now because they picked a dumb fight, and all they had to do was pick one that seems ironic considering their stated principles, which is easy for them because they're really just trolls.

Really though, I do agree with the WBC on the fact that Davis ain't a paragon of virtue herself and has no right to pass judgement. She is a sinner according to the bible, she violated "God's marriage" multiple times. She was not obedient to the Lord like a good little doggy both in the fact she got divorced several times and the fact she is usurping God by passing judgement on the gays.

I may not have the best relationship with Christianity but I can atleast respect someone who actually follows the teaching of Gawd because usually a person like that won't be down your throat about how bad of a person you are, they won't judge, won't preach, don't try to force other people to follow their beliefs, just love as Jebus instructed and not love as in the Catholic priest sort of way. Sadly there seems to be exceedingly few of those people.

Also it is pretty bad when the freaking Westboro bunch are making more sense then alot of Republican candidates rights now.

I always saw trolling as a general attempt at stirring up shit and getting negative attention from all concerned.

I mean, they protested gay funerals for years. That pissed off their targets plenty, but they switched to soldiers when they realized that most of America didn't really give a shit about gay kids specifically because they wanted to make as many people angry as possible. Westboro Baptist has about as close to a zero percent approval rating as you get (the fucking Klan has protested against them). This just...seems like a step backward since it probably amuses and pleases more people than it pisses off.

Which does suggest the disturbing possibility that they not only believe what they're saying but consider it more important than the joy of trolling, uh, everyone.
