Re: Canada Election 2015
I know they put up a map of the Toronto area last night on CBC. Basically a solid Liberal block with like two conservative ridings in their.
Edit: I've got to say, I'm pleased with my former home city, and this goes a long way to redeeming Toronto for voting in Rob Ford a few years ago.

Re: Canada Election 2015
Funny thing is, Rob Ford accomplished a lot of what he set out to do. His only real failure was the transit file, and that was mainly due to backstabbing. Even with all of his scandals, were it not for his bout of cancer which forced him to quit the mayor race he likely would have won.The Romulan Republic wrote:I know they put up a map of the Toronto area last night on CBC. John Tory's only achievements so far are avoiding international headlines and sending things to committee so he doesn't have to make a decision. It's kind of sad that an alcoholic crack-addict accomplished far more in his first year than the current mayor. Not that I'd vote for Ford, but Tory's performance is pretty pathetic when I think about it.

Re: Canada Election 2015
Thinking about it, I'm a little bit bittersweet about the Trudeau's victory. While I'm happy the Liberals won, I'm not that big a fan of political dynasties. It's not much of one yet, but I hope it's not the beginning of a larger one.

I don't like the idea of dynasties either. I don't think someone should get an edge just because they had a relative in power. But I also don't think that the best candidate should be rejected because they're related to a prior leader.
Now was Trudeau the best? I don't know. Time will tell weather he can do the job well.

Re: Canada Election 2015
Well he obviously has the best looks. The results clearly demonstrated that Trudeau's hair > Harper's nose > Muclair's beard. I guess that counts for something lol

Re: Canada Election 2015
The man has now won three election campaigns by greatly exceeding expectations each time (first riding win in Papineau, massive win in the leadership campaign and now a big national campaign win). There's pretty good evidence that he isn't just a guy with a famous last name, but a gifted politician in his own right. For illustrations sake, there is probably a good reason Justin Trudeau is where he is right now compared to where Ben Mulroney is.The Romulan Republic wrote:I don't like the idea of dynasties either. Whether that translates into skill at government is a fair question though. Obama proved to be a terrific campaigner but I don't think he particularly amazed anyone with his skills as an administrator. His incoming caucus is talented though and the Liberal's may end up leaning on them.

Re: Canada Election 2015
Interesting question that occurred to me (it obviously doesn't matter in this election though):
What happens if a party gets the most seats but the party's leader loses their riding? Are they still Prime Minister, or does something else happen?
Just wondering, out of curiosity. And yes, I know I probably should know this already.

Re: Canada Election 2015
My understanding is that they would not be able to be prime minister. Citizens vote for their local MP, not the prime minister, and only after the election parliament confirms the prime minister from the elected MPs. So not elected = not the prime minister. The Romulan Republic wrote:Interesting question that occurred to me (it obviously doesn't matter in this election though):

My guess is that the leader of the party would ask for someone to abdicate their seat and take that position. The Romulan Republic wrote:Interesting question that occurred to me (it obviously doesn't matter in this election though):

Close. They would hold a by-election in the now-vacated seat.Jub wrote:My guess is that the leader of the party would ask for someone to abdicate their seat and take that position. The Romulan Republic wrote:Interesting question that occurred to me (it obviously doesn't matter in this election though):

73% of all statistics are made up, including this one.

That's it! I was vaguely aware of that happening in the BC provincial election, but wasn't involved enough to recall the details.SCRawl wrote:Close. They would hold a by-election in the now-vacated seat.

Trudeau will be sworn in on November 4th.

Also, not sure if this really counts as election news, but anyway, our new Prime Minister elect has shored up his support with the Star Wars fan demographic with an excellent choice of Halloween costume.Prime Minister Stephen Harper will formally step down next week, just before Justin Trudeau's Liberal government takes office.
Rideau Hall says Harper visited Gov. Gen. David Johnston right after the election and said he would resign as prime minister in the wake of last week's Liberal majority victory in the federal election.

A spokesperson says Harper will quit Nov. 4, just prior to the swearing-in of Trudeau's Liberals, which is scheduled to take place that same day.
Harper has been prime minister since February 2006.
Moving trucks have been at the prime minister's residence at 24 Sussex Drive as the Harper family prepares to move back to Calgary.

Justin Trudeau took on a more swashbuckling image Halloween night as he took his family out trick or treating.
Canada's next prime minister dressed up as Han Solo of Star Wars fame while Sophie Gregoire wore a Princess Leia costume as they took their three children to knock on doors in Ottawa's high-end Rockcliffe neighbourhood Saturday night.

Justin Trudeau's new home: Rideau Cottage
Justin Trudeau will move into Rideau Cottage, not 24 Sussex Drive
The Trudeaus and some family friends made the rounds near Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General.
The Trudeaus stood on the street as their two eldest kids knocked on doors and received treats.
Son Xavier, 8, was dressed as a bird, daughter Ella-Grace, 6, was dressed as Princess Anna from the Disney movie Frozen and Trudeau's 19-month-old son Hadrien was dressed as a ninja turtle.
The mood was relaxed as many residents welcomed the Trudeaus to the neighbourhood and one person posed for a selfie with the incoming prime minister.
One man who encountered Trudeau's party on the street didn't initially realize the Star Wars character was the prime minister designate and did a double take when he realized who it was.
Security accompanying the Trudeaus was very low key.
The Trudeaus will move into a home on the grounds of Rideau Hall while the prime minister's official residence 24 Sussex Drive is being renovated.

Re: Canada Election 2015
Trudeau is now in favour of the TPP:
Japan PM Abe, Canada PM-designate Trudeau agree to promote Trans-Pacific Partnership
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Canada's prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau agreed to promote the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), both seeing the free-trade deal as beneficial to the region, Japan's foreign ministry said in a statement.
The two leaders exchanged views on the pact during a 15-minute telephone call on Friday, Japan's foreign ministry said.
Last month, 12 Pacific Rim countries including Japan and Canada agreed the TPP, a pact which aims to liberalize commerce in 40 percent of the world's economy by reducing or eliminating tariffs on almost 18,000 categories of goods.
Trudeau is set to become Canada's second-youngest prime minister after winning a general election on Oct. 19.

Trudeau and his cabinet are being sworn in on the news as I type this. Apparently he kept his gender parity promise.
Also has an Afghani cabinet member and a lot of diversity in general.
Stephan Dion's in for Foreign Affairs.
Glad Marc Garneau got a spot.

I think that, on the whole, it looks like Trudeau the Second did a good job putting his cabinet together.

I would quip about Fox News demanding Canada be bombed for appointing a man in turban as Defense Minister, but that would require them to notice anything that happens outside CONUS.
Some great appointments, certainly, and also some significant title changes (Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Immigration, Citizenship and Refugees). Fingers crossed.
