In what way are they 'excellent supplementary weapons?' Why do the Colonies need to potentially compromise their military effort by adding unfamiliar weapons to proven designs? It's not like they're going to have trouble motivating the public against genuine alien invaders, after all. Sweeping unsupported statements aren't useful.

Indeed. It's worth noting that in the series, Colonial weapons (on a fighter and starship scale) were very effective against the Cylons. Hell, we see Pegasus kill one Basestar with a full volley from her forward batteries over New Caprica. The guns on the Vipers are also perfectly capable of killing Raiders and (as we saw with the Resurrection Ship) moderately effective against larger vessels. The reasons why the Battlestars didn't win engagements more decisively more often was lack of time, limited supplies and having to protect 60 odd unarmed civilian ships.

This was after all why the Cylons went with the infiltrate and plant computer virus plan, so they wouldn't have to engage the Colonial Fleet openly.

So why bother with laser weapons then? Forget the fact that they "look cool" out-of-universe, in-universe you need a better explanation than that.
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."

Yeah, seriously, Rule of Cool is *not* a legit reason in any universe, including this one, except Warhammer 40,000 and anime.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Especially as lasers don't look cool. In fact they don't look at all. Lasers (even visible wavelength ones) are invisible in space (heck they're largely invisible in Earth's atmosphere).
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'
