Another versus. Fighter vs. Fighter.

Post by GrandMasterTerwynn »

Yeah, that's right. Another denizen-created sci-fi universe ship to take on all comers: Except this denizen is me. I have a fair idea how these vessels would do, though it's always useful to have outside opinions.

Background: This is for a series of books I'm working on. I'm in the middle of rewriting the first novel (Takes place in the early 2500s) The technology has a Trek sort of feel to it, but I've gone through great pains (increasingly great pains since I discovered the whole SW vs. ST scene) to design vessels that work with good engineering and scientific principles. The only handwaving I've really done is the usual FTL stuff.

*notes: All vessels here are Human ships. Depending on the interest shown, I may do it with other races, more powerful than humans.

Without much further ado:

Round One: Snubfighter vs. Snubfighter.

Vincent-class Medium Figher (Mk. II)
Length: 12 meters.
Peak Accel: 13.5 km/s^2
Peak turning speed under acceleration: 76 degrees/sec. (any direction.)
Defensive Systems
Shields: Fighters have a shield system with several modes of operation. I -- Shields close. All hits absorbed w/ 0% leakage. Sensors useless. II -- Shields 15 meters out. Direct hits absorbed w/ 25% leakage. Glancing hits deflected. Sensors useable but strongly impeded. III -- Shields 30-40 meters out. Direct hits turn into flak bursts w/ 80-90% leakage. Glancing blows deflected. Sensors almost completely useful. Unfortunately, to fire the vessel's weapons, shields must be temporarily deactivated. Since a fighter only has two shields. (fore/aft) this can be problematic.
Shield strength: 220x10E+9 joules.

Hull: Inertial/Gravitic compensation systems are bulky and expensive. As a result, the fighter has enough armor to withstand a single weapon hit to either the back, or the belly of the fighter. This allows the pilot enough time to eject.
Armor: 20x10E+9 joules in aft and keel armor plates.

Offensive
Fighter targeting is computer-assisted, enabling a fighter pilot to reliably hit a moving target in a fully involved combat environment up to 100 km. away. Warheads can chase an enemy craft up to 35 seconds w/ acceleration up to 50 km/s^2.
Primary Weapon: Turboquad plasma blaster. Mounted on a forward turret which can point up to 20 degrees left or right on the front of the vessel. Fires four bolts that impart a total of 40x10E+9 joules of damage on a target. Can deliver around 1.25 - 3 rounds/sec.

Secondary Weapon: Inducer array. An inducer is a HGEM "h-gem" (hyperspatial-gravitic/EM) field jacketed particle beam. On crude shields which only cover a handful of frequencies, it induces harmful feedback that causes more damage against the shield (or rather, the system generating the shield) than is suggested by the weapon's yield. The weapon is omnidirectional and can be fired for up to 4 seconds at 35x10E+9 watts.

Warheads:
(60) Anti-fighter warheads: 51 km/s^2 lateral acceleration. 35 second fuel capacity. Warhead has 75 ton yield.
Up to (6) Anti-capital ship torpedoes: 55 km/s^2 lateral acceleration. Up to 120 second fuel capacity. Warhead has up to 24.7 MT yield. Much of that is focused into small cone (70%)

We'll take on all comers, be it fighters, or capital ships. :-D

Can I have my HW based fighter which uses an Interialless Drive take it on? :D :D :D :D

Well, we did say all comers . . . but inertialess drive. I get the feeling that's gonna suck real bad for me real quick...

Top speed .9999c

Does not play by the rules of acceleration or intertia.

I haven't even started on it's guns.

Hehe, oops. No edit key. It occurs to me I need to add the following things:

A:) The vessel has an FTL drive. It's rated at a maximum of 50 LY/day.

B:) The fighter is also a competent aerospace fighter. It's not as maneuverable as an F-16 or a F-22. It can, however travel several times faster than the speed of sound and go accelerate to space within 10 minutes. (I've actually modeled the fighter using a program called X-Plane.)

Below is a screenshot from the program. This is an image of two fighters taken while they were actually in flight.
