Given that it has been pretty slow here lately, lets rehash some of the old debates with the new information we have now that they didn't have at the time:
1)The Eclipse Scenario
Well, I felt it appropriate in this case.. To begin my stay here with
something of interest. It's a space combat scenario, to be precise. The
Eclipse class Command Ship Indefetigable, under the command of a clone
of Grand Admiral Thrawn, with full flash-printing of his memories, of
course, has had it's primary and backup hyperdrives disabled by a
Federation saboteur, though otherwise it's fully operational. A
replacement Hyperdrive and escort vessels are expected to arrive in
nine hours. However, the disabling of the Indefetigable's hyperdrives
was part of a well prepared trap. A massive Federation fleet is baring
down upon the Indefetigable, intent on crushing the massive flagship of
the Empire's invasion force, and killing their commander and brilliant
strategist, in one swift stroke. The Federation fleet includes 5
Sovereign class Starships, four Prometheus class starships, Thirty
Galaxy class starships, forty Nebulas, ten Ambassadors, one hundred
Excelsiors, one hundred Mirandas, fifty Akiras, thirty New Orleans,
twenty Centaurs, 50 Steamrunners, 30 Norways, 30 Defiants, and 200
Peregrines. However, The Indefetigable isn't out there by it's self. In
it's holds, and fully combat capable, are 600 TIE Defenders, 96 Missile
boats, 72 armed shuttles, and 72 armed boarding transports.
Still, it isn't just numbers. The combat is taking place inside an odd
star system, consisting of three massive Blue-white supergiants, and
two Green large stars, all co-orbiting in a very complex system, doused
with radiation. Though no planets are capable of being formed, the
system is strewn with millions.. possibly billions.. of asteroids and
small planetoids, which combine to make sensor readings much less than
spectacular. So.. Will the Federation fleet be able to destroy the
Indefetigable before the escort and ships containing it's new
Hyperdrives arrive to drive them off, or will the Federation survivors
be fleeing an intact Indefetigable and a squadron of ISDs?
2) [Tact] Defiant vs Rogue Squadron
Rock On
3) Federation Attack Fighters vs TIEs
In "Favor the bold" and "Sacrifice of angels" we see the Federation
using small fighters against the Cardominion. As they pass the camera,
you can clearly see the cockpit, they are obviously fighters on the
same scale as SW fighters. A lot of debates and fanfics make a lot of
hooha about the Federation being unprepared to fight an enemy which
uses fighters as well as capital ships. (i.e. the Empire) But the
Federation could send it's attack fighters against those TIEs. The
Federation fighters would probably be more successful in battle than
the TIE fighters, because they have sheilds and the TIEs don't.
(Sheilds do make a difference. In SW, the TIEs always seem to spend
most their time eating lead. The reason for this is obviously because
the rebel fighters are sheilded, the TIEs arn't.)
Obviosly a T/A would be more difficult, since it has sheilds.
Lets have fun.

Re: Golden Oldies
Yeah, since the ONLY ongoing threads I see are Thrawn vs Spock, ST vs DS1, and WHo would be YOUR computer expert... Has it really gotten to the point that we need to be arguing Thrawn vs Spock as the ONLY decent topic around??Ender wrote:Given that it has been pretty slow here lately, ... (snip)

1. Although the Eclipse does not have the manpower necessary to subjugate the AQ, or even any substantial fraction of it, it is also nearly invulnerable to destruction itself. No AQ power, or even all of them combined, have the firepower to eliminate the starship.
2. Rogue Squadron would fire one torpedo at the Defiant.
3. If anything, the attack fighters only PROVE that the UFP does not have the ability to defend itself against TIE fighters, rather than showing that they did. If the UFP and its technologically similar opponents could easily defeat such fighters, they would be tactically useless. The fact that these starfighters pose a threat to completely fresh Cardassian capital ships demonstrates conclusively that those same Cardassians would have little or no ability to protect themselves from TIE starfighters or similar.
Moreover, the presence of starfighters does NOT show the ability to defend against them, or even show that a starfighter is better at defending against other starfighters than capital ships are. We have never seen a true "dogfight" in ST, and those starfighters may have been specifically designed to attack lumbering capital ships by exploiting gaps in their defensive fire than they are at actually engaging other starfighters. In fact, Sisko appears to allude to such a mission profile in "Sacrifice of Angels."

Yeah, that was my initial thought as well, but that would mean searching out a board and starting shit, which I didn't feel like doing.anarchistbunny wrote:I agree about the slow down on the STvsSW forum, but I think the solution should be luring trolls and idiots instead of rehashing old topics.
You know what's funny? You could switch the Eclips with an ISD nowadays
