Re: Something big
Hey all.
I just joined this forum after seeing the amazing work all of you do with the SD designs.
Please forgive my ignorance, but what program is used to make these designs?
Keep up the awesome work.

Not to burst your bubble my friend but it's only really fractalsponge that does work of this quality, the rest of us just admire it and attempt to pick our jaws up off the floorHelotech wrote:Hey all.

Ah, Okay. I checked out his website and he does do amazing work. I was just wondering what he used to make such detailed stuff. Purchased / downloaded 3D program?

Re: Something big
IIRC he's a professional 3D modeller so the programs he uses could be something that's either too expensive/complex for us mere mortals or just not avaible.

I use 3d Studio Max for the modeling. I believe there is a free student license for it.

That's actually based on a ship that was briefly seen in I believe Dark Empire, though I can see why you would think it was the Finalizer.Captain Seafort wrote:He might already have done something very much like it, five years ago. Speaking of which, fractalsponge, I might as well ask, do you have any plans on actually finishing up that ship (assuming of course that's not the Bellator-class dreadnought) as well as the Anonymous 3 mockup (and possibly reuploading the images on this post since they're dead currently), and possibly your renders for the Black Prince, this ship, as well as that carrier you were working on in a few posts beforehand (you know, the one based on that Giel's carrier thing), and that Imperialized LAATi and possibly any WIP images that for whatever reason didn't make the transfer? The link to your progressing images for the carrier and to some extent the others have died, and it would be neat for people to access the development plans for each of your ships that haven't already been accounted for on your site. But hey, no hurry for you to finish, take your time if you still intend to finish up those things, I just want to know.
On a semi-related note regarding your site, I might as well ask: How do I register to your Wordpress site? I tried logging in, but it claims it doesn't recognize my username even though I registered to Wordpress specifically to post something on your comments section.
You might want to upload a remake of the scale for the Bellator, Executor, and Assertor and possibly include the Allegiance on there as well, but, just a suggestion.
Mainly joined up because I'm a huge fan of your work.

Re: Something big
I'm aware of the inspiration - my point was that both the DE original and fractal's interpretation of it are close enough to the Finalizer's design and size that I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that one or both of them are the inspiration for it.Weedle McHairybug wrote:That's actually based on a ship that was briefly seen in I believe Dark Empire, though I can see why you would think it was the Finalizer.

Re: Something big
The Resurgent (I like this name much better than Finalzier) wouldn't be a hard model to do. I'll get around to doing one eventually. I am too lazy these days to try to match detail for detail, so I'll probably make a more detailed one and call it a "variant" or somesuch.Weedle McHairybug wrote:That's actually based on a ship that was briefly seen in I believe Dark Empire, though I can see why you would think it was the Finalizer.Captain Seafort wrote:He might already have done something very much like it, five years ago. Not sure why Wordpress is giving you issues - though this might explain why I've never had any comments on my site :p
The Allegiance is on the scale chart at top already. I'd need to re-render a section of Assertor and Bellator to get on the same scale - really they are just too big to fit into that render scale (1pix=1m).
Anything that has been a WIP is a candidate for finishing. But just no guarantees when it'll happen. I have only been putting up WIP posts on the wordpress site that are active, but that actually does seem like an odd way to run things. I'll have to trawl through my old WIPs and post them later.

Re: Something big
Messing about with starfighter models. Note just how large shuttles and heavy fighters like the Gunboat/TIE Defender are compared to TIE/ln and TIE/sa:
Re: Something big
I like it when you do mash-ups of the different ships and fighters. Thank you for the references.

Huh, I had always imagined the blastboat as being bigger than the shuttles.

The Bellator was used in this ship size comparison video. Didn't know if you knew.

that video does not seem accurate....
A snow speeder was able to fly between the legs of an ATAT. the interdictor Immobilizer was only 600m, the mc80 looks too small compared to the ISD .... i don't think they have thier models sized correctly

Odd, I see the video just fine.fractalsponge1 wrote:I...can't seem to see a video link?
If in doubt, you could always type "Starship size comparison (Star Wars)" on Youtube, and then look for the one authored by MetaBallStudios.
And anyways, good job regarding the various fighter/shuttle scales. Hope you keep up the good work, especially when the ships and military hardware are pretty much the reason why I'm a Star Wars fan.

I suspect they meant the Interdictor Star Destroyer variant, not the Immobilizer 418 design.Burntstrobe wrote:that video does not seem accurate....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnxd3t6iUiM There it is. And yes, I've noticed he does tend to get his sizes wrong; in an earlier size comparison of ships from all over sci-fi he pegged a Star Destroyer at 900 meters.

Re: Something big
What do you use to make the textures? Do you have any tips you could share with us beginners?
It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.
You win. There, I have said it.
Now there is only one thing left to do. Let us see if I can sum up the strength needed to end things once and for all.

Say, FractalSponge, speaking of your fighters:
I was going through one of your old sites (http://fractalsponge.net/3D%20Projects.htm), and I noticed something:
You had a project called TIE Defender MkN and its status was complete, yet there's not even a single image. Do you mind if you can upload the MkN version onto here so we can see what it's like, if you still have the renders, I mean?

Re: Something big
The MkN was my second ever model. It's no good :p
My textures are largely procedural. I'm so bad at texturing that you definitely don't want tips from me. Modeling I can help with.
God, so little time these days. Update:
