The Battle of Nelvana IV
At Nelvana IV, and alien race known as the Husnock attacked a Federation colony and sterilized the planet within a short timeframe.
The question... How would an Imperial colony fare against such an attack.
The Husnock ship's capabilities will be assumed to be comparable to what we actually saw in the TNG episode "Survivors"; i.e., we assume that the Dowd's recreation of their ship was quite accurate. We know the Husnock were capable of BDZ-ing the planet in a short timeframe, at the very least. The ship was armed with a single "spinal mount" weapons system that fired streams of ionized anti-hydrogen ("positrons and anti-protons"). It also had shields that effortlessly withstood the most intense weapon bombardments we have ever seen from a Federation starship (multiple simultaneous photon torpedo impacts and a sustained phaser barrage).
We assume that the target is a new Imperial colony located close to Husnock territory. For unknown reasons, the colony has no ships equipped with hyperdrive. Assume that the colony has defenses no stronger than those of the Rebel's Echo Base on Hoth (from ESB) and no spacecraft more powerful than a TIE fighter.
The colony *does* send a distress signal when attacked, so reinforcements can be expected in a matter of hours. Do we have enough information to determine whether the colony could resist the Husnock that long?

We never saw a living Husnock, and the only one of their ships we saw as a reconstruction made by Kevin Uxbridge, who exterminated the entire race before the Enterprise arrived at Nelvana IV.paladin wrote:Was any physical description of the Husnock given?

It's only a theatre shield. Can the colonists under it survive if the area surrounding the shield is being blasted with BDZ-level firepower? This is a colony, not a sealed military installation.Grand Admiral Thrawn wrote:The coloney simply waits under the Planetary shield (which can survive bombardment from 5 ISDs and 1 SSD) until reinforcements arrive.

I would say the colony would not surevive true BDZ firepower landing around the shield. The only question is how close to actual BDZ firepower the Husnok ship had. I think it had less "broadside" firepower than a Stardestroyer as the colonists had enough time to attempt a resistence- useless as it was. However, I doubt it took more than a day, which still speaks volumes about its main weapon So, I think it can destroy the colony before help comes. Especially as its weapon is described as converging beams of matter and antimatter-it probable can be set to go off as a bomb at the edge of the shield, and GT level explosions have a large shock/thermal front.

We don't know how many ships attacked the planet in "Survivors". I take it we are assuming that enough are comming to BDZ the planet?
We don't know how long the attack actually took. The E-D showed up three days after receiving the distress call. We know (from the dowd's description of losing his wife) the colonists had enough time to organize a resistance force (even though it was totally futile). I'd say that would give the imperials more than enough time for reinforcements to arrive.

If there was time to mobilize resistance, and they didn't even have a shield up (theatre or otherwise), I doubt its equivilent to the capabilities of an ISD. In which case, fire up the ion cannon! I'd say they could take on numerous threats in short sucsession with the big gun, even if the neutralization of only a single ship has been witnessed. Then you just load up the TIEs and pummel the ship(s) 'till it blows.

I seem to remember them only killing those who resisted, and that they weren't seeking to destroy the planet to start with, its just that when practically the entire population had engaged in resistance against them, they just wrote the planet's population off as a loss. Barring Uxbridge's presence, they were correct, any population willing to actively resist a power with the demonstrated will and means to slaughter those who oppose them would be more trouble than they are worth to keep around.

Crap. I hate all those sound-alike system names.Uraniun235 wrote:Just FYI...
The Nelvana system was where Admiral Jerok claimed a secret Romulan base was in the Neutral Zone in "The Defector".
The destroyed colony in "The Survivors" was on Rana 4 in the Delta Rana system.
