Only a fan film, alas...

I mean, I actually consider Firefly overrate and I still wish this was real.

The reason so many consider Firefly cherished is because it ended due to circumstances that were not entirely fair. This left fans with a sense that it never reached its potential. It also has the advantage that unlike other Joss Whedon series, it ended before he could begin tormenting the heroes fully. The Romulan Republic wrote:From the same guy who made that animated Buffy trailer a while back. He's also done similar things for Doctor Who and Batman vs Superman.

Sorry, Firefly is kind of a sacred cow for me. This does look intriguing though - I wonder how the voice acting will hold up...
Ditto, I've seen as much indicated elsewhere. While it looks OK (a few rough bits here and there) Fox would almost certainly stomp hard on any attempt to make anything more than a minute or two of film. They have it in for Firefly so much that they even send cease-and-desists to people knitting Jayne caps...Crazedwraith wrote:Chimaera wrote:YOUR FACE IS OVERRATED!!!The Romulan Republic wrote:I mean, I actually consider Firefly overrate

What voice acting? I'm pretty sure this teaser is the entirety of the fan-film.
I liked Firefly, because it was plain tale told plainly, with characters I could relate to. Especially Mal.Adam Reynolds wrote:The reason so many consider Firefly cherished is because it ended due to circumstances that were not entirely fair. Though personally I prefer the movie Serenity to the TV series, and actually saw it first.
Mind you I don't know all the details, whether they were selling the caps or not (I do think some were, but I'm pretty sure some weren't, and some were only sharing knitting patterns or something like that). From what I recall Fox is a big part of the reason why there's almost no official Firefly prop replicas out there.Esquire wrote:That seems... unusually petty, even for Fox. Its not a real series, just a fan teaser. I did try to make that clear. But I don't blame anyone for wishing it was more.Chimaera wrote:YOUR FACE IS OVERRATED!!!The Romulan Republic wrote:I mean, I actually consider Firefly overrate

I keep seeing people badmouth Fillion over Castle, but as I never followed that series very closely, I have no idea what the hell happened.U.P. Cinnabar wrote:I liked Firefly, because it was plain tale told plainly, with characters I could relate to. Especially Mal.
(too bad Nathan Fillion was such a first-class prick in Asshole, I mean Castle, though)
Part of it is annoyance by Firefly fans that Castle succeeded where Firefly failed. I actually enjoyed Castle a great deal, as it is a generally fun take on the mystery genre. It's not as clever as a proper mystery novel, but is usually much more lighthearted and thus pleasant to watch. Though the later seasons definitely lost something, suffering from the curse of Moonlighting and creative fatigue. The Romulan Republic wrote: I keep seeing people badmouth Fillion over Castle, but as I never followed that series very closely, I have no idea what the hell happened.
He always seemed like a decent person to me. And certainly a very good actor. Not just for Mal- his villain role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer's seventh season was one of the series' most memorable for a second-tier character.

I don't know what UP Cinnabar is referring to. But I've not seen much complaining that Fillion did Castle. I have seen a lot of rumours that he's an entitled jackass and prima donna on the set of the Castle though. And that he greatly disliked and bullied his co-star Stana Katic and that in negotiations for the never to be 9th (10th?) Season he insist the two male backup detectives had to be kept on and that Katic shouldn't be.Adam Reynolds wrote:Part of it is annoyance by Firefly fans that Castle succeeded where Firefly failed. It is also the fact that Richard Castle the character is something of a lovable jackass, insufferable due to the way he flouts both his intelligence and wealth. He also has the distinction of being one of the few "detectives" who answers the phone call that there has been a murder with a smile.
^This, to answer Rom's question. And, Stana Katic herself said, in interviews at the time*, this was the case, and that Fillion's meddling led to ABC firing her(and Tamala Jones), which led to the fans not being happy about that, which finally led to the network wisely scrapping the entire show.Crazedwraith wrote: I have seen a lot of rumours that he's an entitled jackass and prima donna on the set of the Castle though. *shrugs* it's Fox.The Romulan Republic wrote:I mean... is Fox trying to get bad PR?Elheru Aran wrote:Mind you I don't know all the details, whether they were selling the caps or not (I do think some were, but I'm pretty sure some weren't, and some were only sharing knitting patterns or something like that). Prosecuted innocuous non-profit fan projects always seems so utterly daft and counter productive.
That sounds a lot like the Axanar Star Trek case, from what I've been reading in the thread over in the Star Trek forum.Elheru Aran wrote:*shrugs* it's Fox.The Romulan Republic wrote:I mean... is Fox trying to get bad PR?Elheru Aran wrote:

Upon further review, apparently what happened (this was back in 2012-13) was that there were a lot of Firefly fans pitching their Jayne hats via marketplaces like Etsy. Then ThinkGeek started selling an *officially licensed* hat, and suddenly Fox brought the hammer down on all the fans.
It was one of those cases where they were within their rights to do so... but kinda came off as huge jerks for it. What the fans were doing wasn't necessarily 'non-profit' (though as far as I know nobody made any real money on those hats)... there were no licensed hats available at the time... and in theory Fox *could* have shut them down from day one rather than waiting till an official prop replica came out. There are also official replicas of Mal's gun, maybe his jacket (IIRC), also a replica of Jayne's gun. But I'm pretty sure most (90%? 95%?) of the prop replicas out there are fan-made.
You could say that about a billion other cancelled series too. But the problem is the firefly fans can't accept that somehow, other people did not and do not so easily head over heals fall in love with the cast, which is what the series more or less demanded you do. The creator was not shy about talking about this either. Over produced might not be a fair way to put it, particularly since it had a limited budget, but it was that kind of problem. Probably not helped by it already being the creators second go at 'creating a crew' after Aliens 4. And no, airing out of order does not explain anything, nor is that unique problem in broadcast TV anyway.Adam Reynolds wrote: The reason so many consider Firefly cherished is because it ended due to circumstances that were not entirely fair. Not the same at all. ThinkGeek's product was actually officially licensed and is still for sale; what they did was hold off until there was an official replica and then drop the hammer. No one crossed a particularly bright line compared what they'd been doing before at the time of the C&Ds.The Romulan Republic wrote:That sounds a lot like the Axanar Star Trek case, from what I've been reading in the thread over in the Star Trek forum.
They turn a blind eye to a lot of things until some jackass crosses a really blatant, major line, then collectively punish the fandom.
It's known that JJ Abrams was making a big stink against CBS lawyers to stop them from going after fan films in the run up to Into Darkness, so I'm not sure this logic is really sound. It may simply be that it took time for his internal influence to fade. Anyway I really see no way to defend a 'fan film' that was at the point of wishing to physically own a building and paying its top guy a 38,000 dollar salary. Anyway nothing about this is nearly as bad or blatant as ripping off the B5 pitch to make DS9, but nobody gives a damn about that now either.Rogue 9 wrote: As for Axanar, it's starting to look like what happened is CBS used their crowdfunding success as free market research, if what's circulating about the new Discovery series is true (namely that it's set during the Klingon war). After all, they had loads of time to shut down Axanar, but waited until they'd announced their series first. The fact that Horizon was the only other fanfilm to get legal attention from them is no coincidence (their ship was named Discovery).
