Bomb in New Jersey, unidentified explosion in New York.

An explosion rocked the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan and caused at least 25 injuries on Saturday, the New York City Fire Department said, prompting emergency personnel to swarm one of the most bustling areas of the city on a cool autumn evening.

A law enforcement source said an initial investigation suggested the explosion occurred in a dumpster but the cause was still undetermined.

At least three people were seen being taken away from the scene of the blast in ambulances, but the severity of their injuries was not immediately clear. A car seen driving through the area had its rear window blown out.

The blast occurred at about 8:30 p.m. ET between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue on 23rd Street, a major east-west thoroughfare in the fashionable downtown neighbourhood of Chelsea, J. Peter Donald, a deputy commissioner with the New York Police Department, said in a Twitter message.

'Deafening'

Representatives of the NYPD, the Fire Department of New York and other city agencies could not be reached immediately for further comment.

Twenty-five civilians were confirmed to have been injured in the blast, the New York City Fire Department said on Twitter.

The explosion, described by one neighbour as "deafening," happened outside the Associated Blind Housing facility at 135 W. 23rd Street. The facility provides housing, training and other services for the blind. Hundreds of people were seen fleeing down the block on a cool early autumn evening, as police cordoned off the area.

"It was really loud, it hurt my eardrums. My 10-year-old boy was sat in the back seat of the car, and the explosion blew the back window out," said Tsi Tsi Mallett, who was in a car driving along 23rd Street when the explosion took place.

'We could smell smoke'

Her son was not injured. Neha Jain, 24, who lives in the neighbourhood, said she was sitting in her room watching a movie when she suddenly heard a huge boom and everything shook.

"Pictures on my wall fell, the window curtain came flying as if there was a big gush of wind. Then we could smell smoke. Went downstairs to see what happened and firemen immediately told us to go back."

New York City Police issued a bulletin advising motorists in the area that they should "expect extensive traffic delays and emergency personnel in the area of 23rd Street and 7th Avenue" due to police activity there and asking the public to avoid the area.

Earlier Saturday, a pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, N.J., shortly before thousands of runners participated in a charity 5K race to benefit Marines and sailors. No injuries were reported in what authorities believe was a deliberate attack.
Thankfully neither appears to have caused an fatalities- the New Jersey blast seems to have been mistimed. They may not even be related, and the New York one may not even have been deliberate.

The main concern, therefore, is the potential political ramifications- with the election virtually tied, this seems like something Trump's race-baiting fear mongering can play off off. On the other hand, he was unable to capitalize on Orlando due to his own stupidity, so who knows?

The NJ blast was a daisy chain in which only 1 of 3 bombs went off, the NY bomb looks to be what happens when all of them work.

The New Jersey blast sounds like it was meant to be basically a repeat of the Boston Marathon bombing, with a race having been scheduled at the location later in the day (Hence the bit about the bomb having been, fortunately, mistimed).

Edit: With the added nastiness that this was a race to benefit Marines and sailors, suggesting that the armed forces were being targeted in addition to random civilians.

You know that their are other possible causes for an explosion?

And of course, when people like you say "terrorism", they generally mean "scary brown Muslim". That's part of the assumption package. Don't think I'm not reading the subtext.

Now, in this case it does appear to be terrorism (no suspect identified yet as far as I know though), or at least that is by far the most obvious possibility. But the assumption still irritates me on principle.

Christ, people like you would dispense with investigation for the sake of making over one billion sapient beings your collective scapegoats, wouldn't you?

No I know there are more possibilities than that.

In fact if someone blew up a huge truckbomb in some US city I would start my suspicion with Timothy McVeigh or something like that. If it was a suicide bomb I would think "scary brown guy".

An IED is hard to call, could be anyone.

If it was an IED at a Marathon I think the Boston Marathon comes to mind.

Well, I'm glad that you acknowledge the other possibilities, though one should still not jump to the conclusion of it being any form of terrorism unless the evidence/investigation bears that out.

An IED... yeah, that's more an Islamic terrorist modus operandi, but it could be someone else.

Although I hope you're not seriously using "scary brown guy" un-ironically.

Thank God for incompetent criminals, I guess.

I just hope they didn't add anticoagulant pesticides and screws with feces on shrapnel inside the device like that asshole in Spokane a few years ago in a device meant to explode during a parade honoring MLK Jr.

Virtually every terrorist organization that's ever existed used improvised explosives- pipe bombs, mail bombs, fertilizer bombs, car bombs, this bombs, that bombs.

Islamic guerillas in places like Iraq have gotten really good at making really big IEDs, but that's just because they're trying to build them powerful enough to take out armored combat vehicles from a distance. There's nothing inherently Muslim about bombs.

Until they identify the perpetrators and/or a group claims responsibility, it very well could be a white-membered terrorist organization or a copy-cat crazy.

Yeah. If it was a uk target, an ied in a bin (instead of a suicide vest) would scream ira, but given americsns were their biggest funders, probably not.

Is it cynical that my first thought when I read this was to mentally picture Trump's campaign manager planting the bomb?

That was mine too, but being fair ive been wrong aboit most of the recent atracks. There's enough idiots who welcome racial or religious war to try and start it, and theres even more who hide behind that for their own broken but personal reasons.

FBI Have A suspect.
New York officials have identified a suspect wanted for questioning over Saturday's blast in the Chelsea area of the city.

The man has been identified as Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, a naturalised US citizen from Afghanistan.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has released a photograph.

The explosion injured 29 people. Both the detonated bomb, and a device found nearby, were shrapnel-filled pressure cookers, according to US media.

Investigators have warned the suspect, whose last known address was in Elizabeth, New Jersey, should be considered "armed and dangerous".

The announcement comes after a backpack containing up to five suspicious devices was discovered near a train station in Elizabeth.

One of the devices exploded early on Monday when a bomb disposal robot tried to deactivate it.

No more weird than Clancy's novels "predicting" 9/11. It is a case of survivorship bias in that we remember the odd coincidences that are correct and forget all of the ones that are not.
