Doctor Who does super heroes and other assorted Doctor Who news.

This year's Christmas special of Doctor Who will see the Doctor team up with a comic book superhero.
The 60 minute episode, called The Return of Doctor Mysterio, will be written by Steven Moffat and broadcast on BBC One on Christmas Day.
The Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, will work with the superhero to save New York from a deadly alien threat.
Doctor Mysterio will be played by Justin Chatwin, who has previously appeared in Orphan Black.
The pair will be joined on their quest by an investigative journalist, played by Wolf Hall actress Charity Wakefield.
Matt Lucas, who announced his return to Doctor Who earlier this year, will also appear in the episode.

Chatwin said: "Working with the amazing people at Doctor Who has been one of the most fun and rewarding projects I've ever had the pleasure of being involved with."
Moffat hinted that he was interested to explore the character of Grant, the man who becomes Doctor Mysterio.
Moffat said: "I've always loved superheroes and this Christmas Doctor Who dives into that world. My favourite superhero is Clark Kent. Not Superman, Clark Kent."
Intersting. Just wish they could do an official crossover with Marvel or DC, but that would get... complicated.

Also, a teaser for the spin-off show Class is out.

I'm torn between being furiously erect and facepalming as hard as humanly possible.

So I'm gonna just combine the two in an interesting way, be right back...

Its funny that Moffat says his favourite is Kent, because the guy in the picture as a very Robin-esque look to me.

Well I don't know what you'd consider an official cross over but Marvel used to run the Doctor Who comics and he did appear alongside Deathshead at one point.

They also had death from sandman make a cameo in one of the doctor who books.

That being said, this is fucking stupid but what I'd expect of moffat.

Oh look it's "Doctor Who High" !
Because apparently the shows creators think we need MORE angsty teenage drama and 2 dimensional quips about memes. Oh and don't forget the romance! gotta have lots of kissing! Its not Doctor who without it!

...
so much hate.

"Teen drama" doesn't automatically mean "shit".

While personal tastes vary, of course, I would consider Buffy the Vampire Slayer a teen drama (among many other things), and hands down one of the best written, best acted, and most clever, moving, and original shows I've ever seen.

In fact, if you asked me to name my top two television dramas of all time, there's a good chance that it would be Buffy... and Doctor Who.

And of course, you could call Harry Potter teen drama, at least the later books (although thankfully with far less focus on romance than that label generally suggests, though you'd never know it with how the fan community goes on). And whatever its literary merits, its proven extraordinarily successful. Hell, its probably a big part of why the genre is so popular these days.

But then, shows of Buffy's calibre in any genre are terribly rare. And for every Harry Potter, there's a Twilight.

That said, the teaser didn't look horrible.

Christmas Special - Doctor Who is going to try and jump on the super-hero band wagon because what else would you expect from the creative zombies running it these days.

It has only taken how many years for the show to finally have the Doctor admit he cannot always be there so people should learn to survive themselves ?
I would commend the character development if it did not exist just to have the spin-doctor selling the show.

I might give this new series at least a glimpse of the first episode but Torchwood died to a pathetic whimper after coming off Doctor Who at it's strongest. It would appear that Horror Torchwood did not fly so instead we will go with High School Horror.
Naturally the official trailer seems to go out of its way to tick every damn demographic they can in such a way it feels more like a checklist.

The trailer mentioning a Hellmouth and Vampire Diaries seems kinda weird. Not sure if someone is trying to take a potshot at Buffy / Vampire Diaries or what that was actually meant to achieve. Unless it is being quite literal in trying to directly say this new show is trying to copy Buffy / Vampire Diaries.
If that is the case, the level of laziness and stupidity is astounding to literally fill your trailer with checklist bullshit and then put in a reference that says your new show is like THOSE shows.

New trailer for Class and a glimpse behind the scenes of the Christmas special:

Class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAycTsDzW-w

This one actually shows more of the main cast than of Capaldi. ;) Looks dark, some romance, and a good effects budget. Suggestion that Capaldi will have a recurring role? Not bad, but not much more to go on than that, as far as I've observed.

And, yes, it specifically references Buffy and Vampire Diaries, but I don't mind that.

Interesting that they use Eleven's theme for the video.

Hmm... "Return of Doctor Mysterio"? Just a crazy guess here, but what if the "Doctor Mysterio" is not the superhero OC, but a name the Doctor takes on. What if the "return" part ties this into something that happened in Eleven's era?

For that matter, "Doctor Mysterio" sounds like a super villain's name, almost. Maybe its actually "the Doctor as a super villain"?

It would fit with Moffat's love of dubious twists and the whole "Doctor as a monster" theme of his era.
