Damn, I was expecting at least a couple people getting stabbed with sharpened spoons or getting shanked with improvised shivs during those 9 months.

The most creative improvised weapon I've heard of was a shiv made from melting down Saran wrap on the cell radiator. This happened in a jail one of my friends worked at before he became a police officer. The perp had been tossed in solitary after starting a riot and fighting the prison guards. While in solitary he saved all the Saran wrap that they put on top of his food containers and melted them together on top of the radiator. He then sharpened the shiv on the concrete floor and when he got put back into the general population a month later he shanked his cellmate.

I'm surprised no one's expressed any shock at the fact that I've been to jail. Heh, 3 different ones, actually.
I'm both shocked and surprised, since you seemed to be one of those
nice-guys.

Ah yes, the infamous Bic pen of doom, those things are pretty nasty. Few people realize how much damage those things can do, especially when they shear on impact into nice jagged pieces.

Are the toilets arranged so that you have to do your business in front of everyone?

Were there lots of fights, especially race fights, and did the average dude have to have a shiv just to get by?

Were the guards assholes or relatively professional? How about the prisoners: laid back about the whole thing and doin' their time or constantly power-tripping and being king of the hill?
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!

Hey, I spent a night in Orleans Parish Prison, and trust me IT WAS NO FUN! I'm not proud of it, and quite frankly, I see no way you could be proud of your jail time.

It was a joke anyway. Don't get your pantyhose all in a run, ok? Lata and Happy Fragging! :)

I'm not. it's a huge mistake that I could have done without, and I
have to deal with the fallout from that incident even now, several years
later.

I'm just correcting people's misconceptions about my jail time here to
head off pathetic ad homimem insults against me later in the future

No, each jail cell had it's own toilet. However, during lockdown, you did
have to end up doing your business in front of your cellie.
Were there lots of fights, especially race fights, and did the average dude have to have a shiv just to get by?
Not in my wing, which was the medical wing. However, there were one or
two fights in the other wings in E block during my time. We didn't get
to see them, but we knew about them when those wings were locked
down for the day.

Guards were professional. Most of the prisoners were laid back about
the whole thing. It was a sort of game, seeing how much you could
get past the guards, such as porn rags, tobacco, etc.

They let us out into the exercise yard at noon-time each day, when it
wasn't snowing or raining, or cold.

Was there any special reason why you were placed in the medical wing?

Mind you when I was a poor college student I had one of the longest indepth chats with a released murderer, on a bus ride. We actually talked about Dostoyeski, Machevelli, Tolstoy, Sartre, Pasternak, Hugo & Dumas and many others.

Definatly made my exame on Philosophy and Liturature more interesting that month.

Thought a LOT about escaping while stewing in cell during lockdown. Idle fantasies mostly.

IRL, it isn't worth it. Automatic 10+ year sentence for even attempting
to escape, no ifs, buts, or whatever.

THe last time someone escaped from Seven Locks Road Jail was
almost 15-20 years ago...
