Would A New Hope still hold up today?

Let's say that there was no Star Wars until Rogue One and A New Hope would be released next year. It would have the same script, but have been made with modern day graphics and technology. Do you think it would still be a box office success, or would it flop? Do you even think Rogue One would have done well?

Yes. It was a simple but powerful story with an ensemble cast of characters that worked well with each other telling a timeless story of good v evil and of a son being more than his father expected. Black Knights, Dark sorcerers, gun fights, sword fights, and space ships. Unless the casting turned up shit for actors that couldn't sell their roles, I think it would do just fine.

Probably be even better, considering the reactions to Vader showing what force powered individuals can really do. Hopefully Stormtroopers won't need to be as bad shots either in a modern take, with cover and grittier tactics of modern battle choreography.

While I'd say that ANH made today would be popular, I'm not sure it would be as much of a modern classic as it's today, as much of the initial popularity of ANH was a result of when it came out.

Also how bad shots Stormtroopers are in the OT has been overblown, sure they miss but when they miss they still hit quite close and when fighting redshirts (like in Tantive IV or Hoth) they do hit more times then miss, it's only main characters that seem to be carrying blaster bolt repelling gear.

They still walk into fire like Civil War troops on the line, need to see more of the trooper in Rogue One who waits and calls in another trooper down. Stuff like that makes them less fodder and maybe gives the audience a sense of fear that a main character can die from them. Without that fear they are useless fireworks. Even the Deathtroopers were relegated to getting lucky kills with stuff like grenades.

Yes but it'd need more credible acting at some stages and if the script remains the *same* without any alteration, it'd just be released as a kids movie. Watching SW for the first time as an adult is not a life changing experience, especially for someone who has been brought up on the CGI porn and graphics of the last 20 years.

I don't think there's anything in Star Wars which would be seen as revolutionary or ground breaking. And it certainly wouldn't lead to ESB and ROTJ as we know them.

If it were made today, the casting portion intrigues me the most.

Maybe we'd get Patrick Stewart or Anthony Hopkins as Obi Wan? Older, prestigious actors who, like Guinness, who would be brought in to anchor a group of young, relatively unknown leads?

Ben Kingsley or Jeremy Irons as Tarkin would be pretty awesome.

And something tells me that James Earl Jones would still end up being the voice of Vader.
