How do we know hell is hellish?

Post by Straha »

My question is this, if Hell realy is run by a lot of cast out angels wouldn't they try to make it like another heaven? I mean wouldn't that be the only way you could get a good satanic following?

Didn't God create Hell? Why assume that the fallen angels have much control on how Hellish Hell is?

And if you ask McDonald's, they'll say that Subway subs taste like crap.

We just assume so, since it is a place where murderers and children that swear at their parents go to spend eternity, and according to the Bible, those are bad people.

Murderers go to Hell? So Moses, King David, and God himself are all there?

Who's in Heaven, then? Just the 144,000 Jehovah's Witnesses? Sounds like Heaven won't exactly be a party town :)

LOL, but I do think he was being humorous, considering he also had "and children that swear at their parents".

Actually, that part is real, and it comes from Exodus 21:17: "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death." One of those parts of the Bible that they don't talk about much in Sunday school.

The definition of hell has extended beyond its religious origins. For example:

"What a hellhole," a soldier in some....Vietnam-like place.

Since "hell" basically means any place that is bad beyond imagination, the word would imply that hell is, by definition, hellish.

There is an urban legend that a scientist calculated that if Heaven and Hell exist, then Heaven is hotter than Hell. Of course, this rumour is totally bogus - like most other urban legends.

I've seen that. It was pretty cute. One hardly needs to be a scientist to do that, though. What happened is they took some quotes out of the Bible (out of context) to conclude that heaven receives 50 times the amount of radiation than Earth. Apply Stefan-Boltzmann law, compare it to the boiling point of sulphur (which Hell must be below, since sulphur is merely molten there), and voila...

Someone at least did calculate that hell must be exothermic. He came up with it by considering the amount of souls that must go in and how many would come out, and also took into account that one she-friend he has has said that hell would freeze over the day she slept with him.

Since the two haven't gotten together yet, hell has not yet frozen over. That, along with the souls thing, had him state that hell must be exothermic.

That quesion was actually a test or quiz of some kind and he was the only one who got an A.

Considering that "Hell" is the etymological parent of "hellish," I think it's safe to answer "Yes." to the Threadline.

My roomate raised an interesting question. In Roman mythology, the dead warriors who died with honor went to the Elysian (sp?) fields. The rest went to Hades. But everyone crossed the river Styx. So are the Elysian fields IN Hades, or are they just another part of Hades that isn't bad?

The concept of Hell isn't quite made clear by Christians, but from what I understand, the fallen angels (Lucifer and co.) were ambitious. They wanted to be like God, so god kicked them out. And they all got bitter and are allegedly planning a revolt against heaven (read Paradise Lost).

The original depictions of Hell were, of course, written by Dante in The Inferno. There are no angels in Hell, according to him. Just Lucifer. (Dante's depiction of the entrapment of Satan is actually kinda cool. Dante was a sadist. My kinda dude. :)) So that kind of contradicts the Christian story of Hell.

And if you read Anton Szandor Lavey (which everyone should, dammit!) and buy into what he preaches, there is no hell, there is no Satan, there is only physical desire for wealth, sex, pleasure, etc. which the Christians personified into some ficticious character. Yes, contrary to popular belief, Satanists do not worship Satan.

Zombie -- "Go to Hell!"
Bette Midler -- "Oh, I've already been there. Quite nice, actually."

(10 points to anyone who can name that movie. :))

Hell is the state of death that existed prior to Jesus' ressurrection. Jesus died and entered Hell (state of death) and then was raised to heaven. Jesus promised that if you follow his teaching you also will rise up from this state.

This is why Christianity fit easily into Roman life. They already had their state of death defined (Hades). The Christians promised that you could avoid this place (never really concidered a good place) and instead go to paradise. The concept of Hell as a place beneath the ground, with punishment and the works is really pagan roman beliefs.

This is a good site, the author goes over every single reference to "hell" in the bible:

There were different sections of Hades (3 I think), with elysium being the best, and tartarus being the place of torture and torment. Hades wasn't really a great place, people existed as shades, and eventually fadded into oblivion as people in the real world forgot about them.

Just because I know alot about Roman/Greek mythology..

Hades encompasses all three: The good place(The Elysium Fields, where the heros of the world get to party hard all the time, with the usual assortment of sherbert, young nubile virgins, and beer.), the medium place(Hades Proper, where you simply lost your identity and become one of the Many.. That's pretty bad, ain't it?), and the bad(The specific punishments for those who fuck with the Gods.. Your liver pecked out daily, pointless tasks, etc...)

The Romans had a Good Place, just knew most guys wouldn't go there.

Asatru mythology has a paralell (sp?) to this, in that Hel (name of the place and the chick who runs it) is actually sectioned off into at least 2 "neighborhoods", if you will. Hel itself is much like the Celtic afterlife of Tir Na Nog (Land of Eternal Youth): you kick back, do whatever you want -- most people are reputed to continue on with immortal versions of their mortal lives. Then there's Niflhel. Depictions of Niflhel vary, but the one I'm familiar with depicts freezing cold instead of heat, an eternal blizzard where souls wander, surrounded by signs of shelter and warmth but eternally unable to reach either.
