Post by The Yosemite Bear »

Ok, the morality of heroes that defy society and commit crimes often for "the greater good" what is your take on the morality's expoused by.

Rascalnikov: Crime and Punishment (I was a shit, Prison and Exile have made me better then any man on the outside)

Jean Val Jean: Les Miserables (Always trying to save little girls (Got arrested for burglery to feed his younger sister and her three kids, later escapes from prison to protect an orphan he adopted after he broke porale)

Tom Joad: Grapes of Wrath (Killed one man in a bar fight, and later kills a cop to prevent him from beating to death a union organizer)

Hawkeye: Last of the Mohicans (damn your military laws, I want to protect my friends and their families)

Oliver Twist: (Society is cruel and unjust to the masses, I do what I have to survive.)

More power to him.

You might want to add The Merry Marxist, also known as Robin Hood, to your list.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Better not, most of the money he stole went off to Germany to pay off the baron or lord or what have you who was holding Richard for ransom.

You mean Mr gain-the-mans-trust-learn-his-trade-then-kill-him-and-hide-his-body-and-take-over-his-livelihood?

Mr I'm-not-famous-enough-I-know-I'll-kill-twenty-of-the-kings-gamewardens.

Mr Steal-from-the-rich-and-kill-any-fecker-who-even-tries-to-make-me-share-it.

Don't be fooled, the true Robin Hood of myth is a lot nastier than the nice 18th century version.

The reason he's not on the list as I know a bit more about the older Scottish Chronicles version of that particular outlaw then most people. Of course I loved the character before I learned the truth. Grr, damn Scottish historians keeping accurate records of the crimes & misdeeds of one of the 9th centurys nastier bandits, before Elisibethians and later Victorians decided to white wash him.

Robin Hood was originally just a loveable thief - chekc out some of the medieval poetry.
He's been changed according to the literary preferences of the time. If you want to use a particular interpretation, use Errol Flynn.
"I fight with love, and I laugh with rage, you gotta live light enough to see the humour and long enough to see some change" - Ani DiFranco, Pick Yer Nose

"Life 's not a song, life isn't bliss, life is just this: it's living." - Spike, Once More with Feeling

I'm not sure that using such drek as Oliver Twist and Grapes of Wrath is a good example, IMHO

I see that Winston Smith from "1984" and John Savage from "Brave New World" are not in your list.
