Error in New Essential Guide to Characters (2002?)

Post by Kurgan »

I was reading the New Essential Guide to Characters at my local bookstore today (heh) but I noticed an error in the section on Kyle Katarn.

Now I know Kyle is a game character (featured in Dark Forces, Jedi Knight Dark Forces II, Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith and now Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast) and so on the low end of continuity, BUT he's been promoted to official EU timeline because of his inclusion in this guide and in the Dark Forces series of novelles (Soldier for the Empire, Rebel Agent, Jedi Knight).

In the NEGC they state that Kyle spared the life of the female Dark Jedi Sariss.

This is utter hogwash, because both in the game and in the novelle "Jedi Knight" you kill her. She's dead!

All of the "Seven Dark Jedi" are dead, unless you followed the Dark Path (which isn't assumed by the books or the later games).

So wtf were they smoking when they wrote this?

As long as I'm ranting, does anybody know wtf is up with the "reincarnation" rumors from "Splinter of the Mind's Eye"?

People keep saying how either Leia or Luke is "brought back from the dead" with the kaiburr crystal, but I can't find any quotes that prove this.
I did read the book (it was a long time ago) but I swore they only used the Crystal to heal, not to bring a corpse back to life!

Can somebody quote with page numbers what they are referring to? Thanks.

Don't blow a gasket.

Dan probably just made an error. He did in WoTC's Coruscant and the Core Worlds Sourcebook and admitted it as such.

It happens.

Dunno about that one.

You are correct. Luke used the crystal to boost his Force powers and heal Leia, but she was NOT dead.

They probably mixed Sariss up with Tavion from Jedi Knight 2.

In the NEGC they state that Kyle spared the life of the female Dark Jedi Sariss.
They might have confused her with Yun who Kyle spares after they're first encounter.
All of the "Seven Dark Jedi" are dead, unless you followed the Dark Path (which isn't assumed by the books or the later games).
It's possible they confused the two. Especially since it's been a while since the game first debutted.

Leia was the next best thing to dead and Luke healed her using that funky crystal. It wasn't reincarnation or ressurection so much as it was simply a damn impressive bit of healing.

SPOILERS

Of course they later reveal that the Kaiburr crystal isn't so much a "hunk of force mana" but rather nothing more than a "focus" for Force power... so it's your own power "bouncing off" or something. The "real power" is still in the user. Of course the book is ambigious as to whether or not Leia has force sensitivity...

As to the confusion with Yun, I doubt it, because a sentence before he mentions Kyle sparing the life of Yun (and he's later killed by Sariss).

The game has been out a long time, but he could have easily looked it up in the book and read the description of Sariss's death to know what was going on. He makes no mention of Tavion, etc. leading me to believe that the book was written before enough info on JK2 was officially known (JK2 came out March 2002).
