Bluetext: I've had some Europeans (Britons in particular) do that to me. So, yeah, I do. Just replace "American" with "British" or "French" or whatever.

This is by no means an isolated incident, I get this, or a variant thereof several times a week. And guess what? Its uniformly Americans that do it.

Well, I've managed to tour Japan without making a fool of myself (actually speaking Japanese and being aware of cultural differences and etiquette makes one hell of a difference).

I speak pretty good french (not that it would help in Nawlins i'm guessing), but I am without a doubt well aware of the culture etc that is entailed in New Orleans, rather unlike many of those who would tour other places. In fact I rather pride myself on my knowledge of other nations and cultures.

Good thing that most tourists in St. Petersburg were so dumbofunded by the difference between what they expected to see (wooden izbas and bears parading on the streets) and what they saw in reality, that they were incapable of speaking.
