It should also be noted that certain concept derived names like "Defiant", "Enterprise", "Voyager", "Equinox", "Intrepid" or "Reliant" would be more or less universal and not "english".Patroklos wrote: ↑2017-08-15 10:36am I think some of you are letting your homocentrism show. Its quite obvious that Starfleet has settled on Terran English as their operating language, which means that just because a ships name is an English word doesn't mean it is referencing a Terran source.
I am sure lots of species have ships in their history, pre and post space flight, named Defiant. Do we actually know the source of the USS Defiant's name choice? Are you sure its not a translation of the storied Andorian Sea Destroyer Ullu'umlav&*?
Of the named ships in Discovery that have been revealed "Shenzou" and "Europa" would be "human exclusive" without a dout but "Discovery" means "something that has been discovered" and by no means shouldn't be a human only concept. Sure the name is in english but english seems to be official language of the United Federation of Planets probably since United Earth was vital in forming UFP, the other founders would probably still be at each other's throats had Earth not formed an alliance to oppose the Romulan that eventually grew into the Federation we know.
