Space Battleship Yamato 2202

Back in the 1970s there was a series known as Space Battleship Yamato, it was known in the West as Star Blazers.
A handful of years ago, a remake of that series was released and called Space Battleship Yamato 2199. It was glorious and many on this very forum praised it for being made of awesome and win.

Now it seems that the next season will be launched February 25, 2017 and will be called Space Battleship Yamato 2202.
From the trailers it seems to be everyone versus the Comet Empire. I also see the Andromeda, with it's TWO Wave Motion Guns.

I'm watching episode 1 right now.

The opening has the Comet Empire, accompanied by awesome organ music, blowing the bejeezus out of an island because they have rather big weapons and can blow up whatever the hell they like. The leader monologues a bit how the Universe is alive and needs love.

Gamillion and Earth have become allies against the Comet Empire and there's a space battle to retake the eighth floating continent. Kodai is now Captain of a small escort ship much like his brother was. His Girlfriend, Yuki, is back on Earth, part of the operations centre watching the battle.
The battle seems fairly even, when suddenly the CE forces retreats and the Gamilons move after them. But, as you might expect, it's a ruse and the CE unveil and cunningly hidden Super Dreadnaught ship ... which proceeds to destroy pretty much everything.

Kodai looks like he's just crapped his pants and Earth gives the order to retreat ... which in turn is a ruse. An act to give a clear shot to the brand new Andromeda which sports TWO Wave Motion Guns. Which it promptly fires. And it destroys the Comet Empire fleet. And the floating continent.
The destruction of the floating continent links back to, of course, the initial firing of the Yamato's Wave Motion Gun and also to Captain Okita's promise to Iscandar that Earth wouldn't use the Wave Motion tech for violence.
Which Earth has ignored.
Why?
Because who wouldn't pass up the chance to build a ship with TWO Wave Motion Guns?!

The Super Dreadnaught plays dead and suddenly follows a couple of damaged Earth ships as they warp back to Earth for repairs. The SD rams through the planetary defences (travelling quick enough to go from the Moon to Earth in 400 seconds. Just how damn quick is that?) on a collision course with the Earth High Command building. Kodai's small escort ship pops out of warp and, once it finds its guns are useless against the SD, rams it to try to change its course. Little ship with little engine against giant ship with big engine? Kodai's effort is useless.

And then there's a call. It's Sanada and other previous Yamato crew members.
They're on the Yamato. Which is in poor condition in a hanger under the ocean. The ship is sporting rust and looks partially dismantled (later comments state it's undergoing modernistaion). Sanada fires up the engines and the Yamato theme starts playing and I have something in my eye. Shut up.
The Yamato, still in its hanger, fires one of its main deck guns and teaches the Super Dreadnaught who is boss.

Back in orbit, there's a flash of light and suddenly Captain Okita (in yellowy ghost form) is telling Kodai to get his ass back to the Yamato.

Oh, how I have missed this series. 2199 was glorious space opera and 2202 is off to an absolutely cracking start.

Episode 2:

More low key than the first, as you'd expect. This seems more focused on what the previous Yamato crew have been up to.

Gamilon have an Embassy on the Moon. Earth captured a live CE soldier from the wreckage of the Super Dreadnaught, who analyses shows was artificially enhanced. And the captive blows up, taking a good portion of the building with him - apparently all CE soldiers are set up that way. Not sure if that's a good tactical move or not.
Kodai gets chewed out by his superiors for helping save the day while four new Andromeda class ships are launched in a public ceremony. The Gamilons talk about a figure named Teresa, stating that if she's getting involved then things are definitely serious. Teresa seems to be an Iscandaran(maybe?).
Dialogue reveals that less than one third of Earth's population remains, while there's a definite anti-Gamilon sentiment on Earth as shown by distinct shots of graffiti.

Dr Sado sits at the base of a statue to Captain Okita, drinking and complaining no one remembers the Yamato. Then a bunch of Yamato crew show up with wreaths to honour Okita's memory. They promptly sit around and get shit faced before admitted they all saw a vision telling them to get back to the Yamato. They also comment on how making more ships with Wave Motion Guns is a bad idea.
To emphasis the point, the Andromeda makes a dramatic flyover of the scene.

Sanada, through the power of not having eyebrows, analyses the flash of light from episode one - saying he grabbed the scans the Yamato did before the soldiers arrived. On playback of the data He, Kodai and Shima experience another vision from Teresa, one linked to a pulsar travelling at the speed of light some 10,000 light years away.

Kodai head to the old underground city military HQ, long since mothballed, where he finds he's being followed by Earth agents. A mysterious guy in a bad hat shows up and reveals that all the Yamato crew are being watched. Bad Hat Guy reveals he's a disguised Gamilon and that Gamilon owes the Yamato for getting rid of Desler. As such, offering a trip to the Moon Embassy where Earth can't watch where Kodai will learn the truth behind the visions. The ruse to get to the base involves the white haired pilot from 2199 making an appearance in an utterly impracticable new Cosmo Tiger and a damn near transparent flight suit.

Meanwhile, Lord Zordar of the Comet Empire finds out that Theresa has contacted Earth and orders the CE fleet there.

Up to episode 10 of this series is now available and ... it's surprisingly complex in terms of morality, even if Kodai is acting a bit like a prat at times.

Okita's ghost is literally and figuratively hanging over the ship, his impact as former Captain giving Kodai damn near impossible shoes to fill.
Gatlantis tech is damn near scary in places - they have the habit of reanimating dead enemy agents (and their own soldiers) and then using them as remote control puppets and/or explosive bombs as the situation requires. These puppets are very, very hard to tell from the original living person which makes their use very effective.

Previously, Gamilion had installed an artificial star (because why not?) so they and Earth could colonise the 11th planet in the Sol system. Gatlantis, after kicking the shit out of said colony, demonstrates a scary piece of war technology. They warp in thousands upon thousands of ships and place them in a cannon formation around that artificial star - the star would then be detonated and the energy from the supernova would then be directed by the linked shields of those countless ships so it can be fired at whatever target Gatlantis pleases. They had Earth targetted, Yamato could see it would work and it was only because of the Yamato that the tactic failed.

The scale is mind boggling but damned if I can find an online screencap of the final cannon formation. This is as close as I can find. The green sphere is the artificial star.

The planet in front is the 11th planet. The shape at the top stretching off both sides of the image is the Gatlantis ships moving into position around the artificial star.

Yamato 2202 really is ramping things up in terms of firepower. Heck, the first battle introduces the Andromeda which sports TWO wave motion guns, as seen here:

The live action Space Battleship Yamato movie is a different beast altogether. Which is a good thing, as it was rather lackluster (though with some great SFX) and incredibly jammed plot - which is almost inevitable when you're trying to squeeze 26 episodes into a two hour time frame.

Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a direct remake/reboot of the original animated series from the late 1970s.
Space Battleship Yamato 2202 is a sequel to 2199 set, not surprisingly, three years later. 2199 is definitely the superior series, you can tell they're doing this much more cheaply and the writing simply isn't as good.

The videos in the first post are not episodes, just trailers. The first of the three seems to have been taken down but the others work.
