Stargate Origins... and another franchise dies

Looks underwhelming to me.

Why not just take the plotline of Stargate, SG1, Atlantis and Universe (maybe even through in some Infinity for those few who know it) and straighten the plotlines, trim the fat and make a nBSG style reimagining?

Probably time.

Battlestar Galactica came out in 1978 and ran (sort of) through 1980; it didn't re-air as a remake for nearly twenty-five years.

Now, the original Stargate movie came out in 1994 and the original TV show started in 1997, so it's at least SORT OF the right timespan since the series began. But Stargate TV shows and their spinoffs remained in production up through 2011, which just wasn't that long ago. There hasn't been enough time to 'clear the decks' and give a new team full creative freedom to do a remake.

It's sort of like how when they got the go-ahead to do a new Star Trek TV series in the '80s they didn't just do a remake of the original series. That might have worked out if there had been no activity in the franchise from 1968 through 1988 or so, but it wouldn't have been very viable with Kirk and friends keeping up a recurring media presence through the series of Star Trek motion pictures.

On the one hand, this feels almost nothing like any of the Stargate TV shows, as it much less a rather standard fantastic weekly scifi show boiled in the real world in the present day.

On the other hand, this feels a lot like the theme the original Stargate film was shooting for, with a theme on action adventure and pulp style fun in an archaeological adventure styled work that brings out the feel of old 1930s and 1940s adventure movies. Something the TV show abandoned pretty much as quickly as possible.

And can we have ONE show where the woman is not the super formidable fighter? Especially one set in this time period. You can accept that occasionally, but now it is EVERY single show. And they are never big woman, but always little woman that probably weigh less than 120lb.

Well, we see the female lead pistol whipping a dude which doesn't take "formidable" strength, so you may get your wish.

Anyway, moving on. I actually like it. It gives a new spin (ha, excuse me) to the series and hopefully they will perhaps be more TNG in nature when it comes to exploration and not necessarily fighting for their lives against the Goa'uld all the time. Just don't mention they're from Earth.
