So I just saw 'The Core'...

Post by Kuja »

Spoilers for the movie ahead, so don't read if you don't want it, well, spoiled.

Some nitpicks:

OK, the space shuttle cannot possibly manuever as quickly as it was shown doing.

Humback whales don't swarm around ship and move that quickly, dolphins do.

When they got stuck, why didn't the lava IMMEDIATELY come rushing through the hole?

The other core project is spelled out DESTINI, yet they spell it Destiney every time the name is shown.

Bad points:

technobabblish plot, but when you turn your brain off and just enjoy it, it's not too bad.

Dialogue could've been somewhat better.

Good points:

Damn good SFX.

Some good plot twists.

The Science made my brain hurt.

Killer microwaves are apparently stopped by the magnetic field...

The mag field starts up again as soon as the nukes are detonated.

They make it back up to the surface through the mantle without their rock liquifying laser things and just impellers...apparently the mantle is liquid...

C'mon you don't watch these kinds of movies for the science.

It's like saying Deep Blue Sea sucks because it shows a shark swimming backwards. That and other mistakes in science.

Not really, but after a certain threshold my suspension of disbelief gets frayed(then again I read comics...so ignore such babble from a madman.)

The mantle IS liquid. It's the crust that's solid.

My first response "So I just saw 'The Core'." Oh, I'm sorry. :D
Did they ever say how a gigaton nuke is supposed to impart spin on a liquid mass? That's what bothers me so much about this. Wouldn't that be like popping a balloon in a swimming pool?(not really, I know, I know)

I thought the appeal of Deep Blue Sea was the blonde chick in a wetsuit.

I mean, why else in EVERY SINGLE poster-esque ad I have seen for the movie, she has it zipped down to show a teasing glimpse of midriff?

Last time I checked, the mantle is largely plastic. It's the outer core which is liquid.

actually the mantle has a consistency similar to asphalt. the core is technically liquid, but its under so much pressure that its effectively solid.

Huh, are you sure? I thought it was mostly liquid magma.

That was an excellent scene, and absolutely necessary for the ... er, plot. Yeah, that's it.

The key parameter is viscosity. A sufficiently viscous liquid can be difficult to distinguish from a soft plastic solid.

Now I've got to see it, if Wong thought it was good (and he's a pron-analyzer, or so his page has led me to believe). Assuming it's what I think it is. :D

But that one chick (don't know her name) looks blonde on the poster. Is it the same one?

Heh heh ... it is only a brief scene, however. But she looks really good, even though true porn is best located at your local adult video store.
But that one chick (don't know her name) looks blonde on the poster. Is it the same one?
I haven't seen the poster. There's only one girl in the movie who strips out of her wetsuit, however.

Hm. I'll have to watch it then. Probably is that girl, and my memory is flawed (been awhile since I've seen the poster).

I thought the magnetic field is there because the core spins, not the other way around?

Yeah, she was the high point of the movie, along with that scene where they arrive at the base, and notice the scientist standing away from them taking a piss.

Guy 1: Who's that?
Guy/Girl 2: That's (name), one of the most brilliant scientists in the world.

Yes. They didn't go to the core of the earth, and they didn't need to use any hokey treknobabble to save the planet.
