Best SNES RPG made.

Post by BlkbrryTheGreat »

What was the best Snes RPG made and why do you think so?

(If I missed your pick, feel free to mention it)

For me the contest is between Secret of Mana, FF2 (USA), FF3 (USA) Chrono Trigger, and Ogre Battle.

Just about everything on these games is superb, from the music to the storyline. Ultimatly I chose Chrono Trigger, the everything about that game just rings of perfect within my brain.

Im not listing Final Fantasy: mystic quest, for obvious reasons......

Final Fantasy III. The meat and potatoes of RPGs.

And it's Wanderers from Ys, not Adventurers.

Meh, that game was so crummy it dosen't even deserve the dignity of having it title remembered properly anyway.

True, Ys III is the black sheep of the series. I still like it though, great music, as typical of Ys.

Secret of Mana and Illusion of Gaia were both fun, as was Final Fantasy II.

But NONE of them can touch Final Fantasy III.

And what about Earthbound? The original, for SNES of course. That was fun, and it had some pretty nice humor too.

Final Fantasy 3.

I still love the game.

As for the the original 3(NES version...would've been better if they didn't cheat so damn much with the bosses)

Can't really decide, although Terranigma, which isn't listed would be on my list. I liked it much better than it's predessor, Illusion of Gaia, and I haven't played Soul Blazers.

Earthbound had character and was loads of fun, but the gameplay was extremely average. It's still a personal fave of mine.

A lot of people say chrono trigger, but I didn't find it nearly as fun or as good of a story as FFIII, and while I liked the characters in general in chrono trigger more, I like the story in FFIII much more, and Kefka was a better villian than Lavos, that final battle was one of my favorites in an RPG ever. I liked how(atleast at first) only a few people had magic, but everyone had a skill that made their lack of magic ok, Sabin is one of my favorite RPG characters ever, Mog is too. Chrono Trigger was too linear, most of the time you don't have a choice of what to do next. The final fight was rather boring and easy. No one had any really unique abilities.

True, wasn't much of a challenge at all. Loved the full Melody though after getting all the Your Santuarys though. Wish there was some place I could d/l it.

But you're right, it was a load of fun to play. The free strategy guide that came with it was fun too, and certainly added to the gameplay overall (wish I knew where mine went) :)

The others:

Secret of Mana
Played it through about the second boss, just got tired with it, may have gotten interested in something else, I don't remember, but I just don't remember liking it.

Breath of Fire (any number)
Haven't played any of them that much, I was searching for the GBA ports but lost interest once I got the Wind Waker. Probly will try to again after I beat WW.

Secret of Evermore-
Haven't played.

Final Fantasy II
While I liked this one, I found it overall pretty average.

Ogre Battle
Interesting concept, but I didn't enjoy it much after too long.

Soul Blade
Never heard of it.

Illusion of Gaia
Haven't played it.

Adverntures from YS III
Only played for a short time.

Other notable mentions.
Lufia 2
I'm really surpised this didn't make the list, I loved this game, I don't know, it was different. I like the characters, I liked the puzzles and abitlity to do stuff outside of fights other than walk and press a.

Terrinigma
Poor mans Zelda yes, but it's addictive.

Earthbound
Fun, goofy, but the fighting and leveling is just too annoying to be a great game.

Final Fantasy V(j)
Great game, ok characters, I like the Job system until I lost my FUCKING BLUE MAGE! I stopped playing shortly after that.

Phantasia(something like that)(j)
I love this game, very few people have played this very good game. Great story, interesting fighting system(You control the main character, the others are controled by the computer, you move around, and fight kind like a side scroller, you weapons have a pierce and a slash damage(swords high slash, low pierce damage, lance low slash, high pierce, etc, Slash is easier to hit flying enemies with, pierce is usually more damaging) I would have beaten this if it wasn't for the Rom fucking up.[/b]

True. Mog kicked ass! And the other skills were useful. Terra's Morph, SHadow's Throw, Setzer's Dice, Edgar's Tools, Locke's Steal, Strago's Magic Mimic (forgot real name), Sabin's Blitz, Mog's Dance, Relm's Paint (never used it too much though), Gau's Rage (BEST DAMN SKILL EVER), Celes' Rune, and, naturally, Gogo's Mimic.

Even after you could start getting everyone with Magic, those skills remained useful throughout the game. And the music just plain ROCKED.

For some reason, the game did seem kind of slow. Less of a tactical element than Seiken Densetsu III, but SD3 for some reason is damn fun to play. The Job-Change System and some of the themes (I particularly like High Tension Wire (probably because of the Daanguard battle you fight with it) and Sacrifice, pt III were interesting.
Breath of Fire (any number)
Haven't played any of them that much, I was searching for the GBA ports but lost interest once I got the Wind Waker. Probly will try to again after I beat WW.
Played and beat BF2. Had some interesting battle animations for the main characters, and the fuse system was kinda interesting. Storyline didn't do too much for me.
Secret of Evermore-
Haven't played.
Played it. Didn't like it. Similar to Secret of Mana, some interesting, but annoying twists.
Final Fantasy II
While I liked this one, I found it overall pretty average.
Spoony Bard.
Ogre Battle
Interesting concept, but I didn't enjoy it much after too long.
Same here.

I played Tactics Ogre as well, although it's a completely different in terms of gameplay. Seems to have a good storyline, which is absolutely fascinating because I can't read Japanese.
Soul Blade
Never heard of it.
I believe Soul Blade is a fighting game for an entirely different platform, being the predessor to Soul Calibur.

I do believe he meant Soul Blazers.
Illusion of Gaia
Haven't played it.
Another action-rpg along the lines of Secret of Mana and Zelda. Actually, it's the second of the Soul Blazers trilogy from what I remember, with Terranigma being the third.
Other notable mentions.
Lufia 2
I'm really surpised this didn't make the list, I loved this game, I don't know, it was different. I like the characters, I liked the puzzles and abitlity to do stuff outside of fights other than walk and press a.
I also liked this one, although I'll admit puzzles aren't my thing. The ending was nicely bittersweet. (better if you played the first Lufia) The Sinistral Battle theme is a favorite tune of mine, which I often play the midi version through WinGroove.
Terrinigma
Poor mans Zelda yes, but it's addictive.
Worst I can say is that the first two chapters are a bit slow. Otherwise, great story, and good characters, and Ark actually grows throughout the story. I also liked Royd's Theme (although a bit short), the introduction and credits themes as well.
Final Fantasy V(j)
Great game, ok characters, I like the Job system until I lost my FUCKING BLUE MAGE! I stopped playing shortly after that.
Dude, just keep playing. The little girl gets ALL of her grandpa's previous stats and abilities.

I personally liked how you can pull off interesting combinations, such as having a Drain Sword and 'Aim'.
It's Tales of Phantasia, IIRC. I never heard of a vocalized theme song in a SNES game before this (The FF3 Opera theme doesn't count.) I suppose I could also say that the character voices were kinda cute for the girls. I wasn't terribly impressed with the main villian himself, and I never got the Combo Command thing to work.

You missed Cyan's Swordtechs.... alot of damage which is great but the meter runs a bit slow for my taste. I usually compensate by having him go last.

For some reason, I never used Morph much. Wore off too fast for me.

Throw I never used because I simply didn't like using up items, period.

Slots I used sometimes, but usually magic was more effective.

Tools simply kicked ass from the get-go with the Autocrossbow and later with the Chainsaw and Flash.

Steal I only really try on bosses, and to me was only really effective with the correct relic.

Strago's Blue Magic I never really went around fighting the right monsters to get the most use of it.

Paint is joke. Control is slightly better.

Celes' Runic ability is great, although I have the sad tendancy to absorb my own spells. (I heard someplace that Kefka's final form uses only magic, I can't remember this too well....)

Rage is also great, although I can't remember the best monsters too well. A odd favorite of mine it to get him to do a Bomb impression, which actually works fairly well even taking into account that he kills himself sometimes.

Mimic - fun for everyone, as you can cheaply go up the Fanatic's tower using this.

As for Mog, Dance was fun to use, and useful in the right situations.

Blitz just makes Sabin into a powerhouse for the entire game. The Aurabolt ability simply wipes out enemies from the moment you get him, Fire Dance and Air Blade also kills alot, and Bum Rush is just plain mean. Considering I usually have both Sabin and Edgar in the party....

I found Banon's heal nice, for the short time you have him. Leo's Shock is extremely powerful, able to wipe out an opposing enemy encounter in one go.

Umaro doesn't have much of a seperate special ability, except maybe Blizzard with the right relic. I never used him much.
Even after you could start getting everyone with Magic, those skills remained useful throughout the game. And the music just plain ROCKED.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

Damn good game and the best Zelda ever made. It's a great game and I still play it.

Honorable Mentions:

Chrono Trigger- honestly were Zelda not a beloved series I'd say this is my favorite. Great story and great characters.

Secret of Mana- Damn I loved this game. Not sure why but I do.

I didn't include Zelda cause I decided that game was more action/puzzle then it was RPG.

Good to hear you like CT and SoM though, both are good games IMO.

Ah, one of the biggest videogame debates of all time: Is Zelda an RPG? I've had some pretty extensive arguments about this with Nintendo fanboys, it could get pretty ugly.

I'm sure this has been repeated many many times on this board, but FF3 has to be the finest RPG made on the SNES. The story was good, I was actually caring for some of these characters, and the music was absolutely amazing. Ever since this FF title, I have purchased as many of the music CDs I could find. My favorites so far are the Piano concerts...

Estpolis 2 (Lufia 2). Despite the extremely PC translation (looks like someone went through and did a search-replace on every instance of the word "God" with "super-being," as well as eliminating every use of the words "die" or "kill"), the puzzles were top-notch, combat was interesting, and the story good. Final Fantasy VI (III), Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2), and Tales of Phantasia were also favorites of mine from that era.

Best part about Earthbound was that you can use a toothbush to blind your enemies with your shiny teeth. FFIII is arguably the best RPG ever, let alone jsut for the SNES. I've played a little Lufia II before...Ogre Battle had the best music (the Tarot screen and the usual battle map song)...OB's a close second in my opinion. The game made me feel I was actually there, as the leader. Damn reputation meter.

Oh! GREAT RPG/Action-Adventure: Shadowrun. Cyberpunk meets fantasy in the twisted world of 2050 A.D.! I've got the rom right in here. :P

I would vote for Shadowrun if it were an option.
...This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old...ultraviolence.

Now, back on the topic, Lufia II yo! Screw FF and CT, Lufia 2 rox your sox in a box. Although I like the others, Lufia II stands out as one of the most underrated RPGs of all time.
