The hits seem to keep on coming for Durkula
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

Hm. I feel sorry for Durkon finding this out this way. Note yet another hint that Durkula may really not understand humanoid psychology at all in that he didn't even realize he had leverage over Durkon until Durkon effectively pointed it out.

Though it's a bit unclear exactly how much that leverage will accomplish. Hilgya is well prepared against most things the vampires are likely to be able to dish out, and I'm not sure Durkon can actually do to help Durkula win, or if, when the chips are down, he will.

It might give Durkon some extra motivation to lessen Durkulas control over his dead body. The Power of Love would fit well into the narrativium, Elan and Tarquin would love it.

She could reasonably be pinning it against her body with one arm, it's just that the angle she's drawn at makes it look like she's not holding it in a stable way.

Yeah.

What can V and/or the dwarven NPC cleric (er, the lower-level one) plausibly do against the vampire mind control effect?

Depends on whether they prepared protection from evil and if so how many times. If V prepared magic circle against evil and hadn't cast it yet (an unlikely scenario) it could shut down the whole thing right now.

Wow. For a supposedly high level party, they have some shitty will saves.

The vampires were all spamming Dominate. You're going to roll a 1 eventually.

As a Rogue, Haley's will save is gonna be rather poor to begin with. Belkar's in the same boat as far as class save bonus, and has awful wisdom to boot. As in it is 8 or less.

The rest got unlucky.

I'm pretty sure that the party members' poor Will saves has been mentioned specifically in the past but I can't remember when exactly, other than it was Roy talking to somebody (when he was dead maybe?)

I don't remember if bards have good or bad Will saves, but if Elan doesn't have a Wisdom penalty I'll be flabbergasted.

I checked the 3.5 SRD, and bards get good will saves. Even with a penalty, Elan should be better off than someone that doesn't have good will saves but does have an okay wisdom score. Depending on level.

Well, the characters seem to be in the mid-teen levels; seventh level spell slots are still a big deal for them, maybe edging up to eighth now.

That said, I can totally imagine multiple vampires spamming Dominate on Elan, among other things because he's hurt some of them, with that Mass Cure Light Wounds. And Elan may have a decent Will save bonus overall, but he doesn't always roll high; he could easily blow one of two or three saves.

A battle against a prepared, high-level cleric with detailed knowledge of the party, their abilities and their thinking with the imminent destruction of the entire world hinging on the outcome would be a terrible choice to resolve with an one-sided curb stomp from a story-telling perspective.

Aside from the fact he only became effective when he started ignoring what he 'knew' about them. Comic could easily have gone 'order changes tactics, minion vamps go down, Durkula exits stage left'

This...
Seriously Unless this is THE final encounter against Durkula, Which I highly doubt, there is no reason to prolong it with needless dramatic tension... Surprise the bad guy, kill the looks, the team takes 'Some damage' and Durkula leaves with a "Curses Foiled again!" Just saying I doubt that this is THEE final encounter with him.

Then again maybe they won't actually defeat Durkula.

Durkula/hel's plan works. Reality is undone, the ORder end up on the world inside the snarl. We haven't had much on that mystery since it was introduced.

That would be a hell of a twist.
But if thats the case, well, still not sure what to think of where this is going.

I doubt it; he wouldn't have spent the effort setting up Xykon and company searching the dungeons around Kraagor's Gate.
