Re: Rise of Skywalker news.
The hype over the Emperor returning - I do not buy it.
I am getting the strong impression this is going to be one of those 'subversion' pulls.
We see a modified original ISD with a new cannon where the hanger could be - Compare this to another trailer that shows some kind of planetary bombardment. Further, we have scenes of another hurried evacuation looking effort.
My guess:
The Emperor is not 'back' - Perhaps an AI re-incarnation / downloaded mind / automatic 'fail-safe' system.
This system has hidden a fleet and somehow it decides to go on a rampage against the universe which forces the First Order and Rebels to join forces.
Thus we end up with Rey and Kylo fighting initially against each other but then with each other against the common threat.
One of the scenes have what really looks like a black object being attacked which some have speculated is Vader-like. Perhaps a Vader drone imitation ?
As for 3PO - It looks like he is wired up as he is saying goodbye. We also have other trailer footage where the eyes change to red.
I am thinking 3PO is going to do some droid shenanigans to circumvent or hack into whatever automated systems are being employed here.
Emperor 3PO scene.
Overall, my hype factor for this is tentatively low. This is an increase from not going to bother watching so... success on that front.
At the minimum, having some actual space battle porn should be entertaining enough.
As for it being the 'last' film - Get the fuck out of here.
Disney spent 4 Billion on this franchise, at best they will let it lie for a decade or two while spinning off as much as they can. When that no longer works or George Lucas dies, they will reboot / remake.
Killing off the 'old' characters makes this increasingly more likely as it allows them to literally clean the board, let the outrage fester and die for a good decade before they just reboot with their new cast and direction.

Actually I though I did but I guess you wanted one of those line for line things so...The Romulan Republic wrote: ↑2019-10-23 01:29amI actually just laid out why I felt the character was well-written, and you addressed none of those points other than with vague generalities like "the character was flat" and "the character arc was dumb", and assertions that Rose only existed to "get Finn out of the way", which ignores the actual role she played in furthering his character development. The only one trying to dodge valid criticism, the only one being dishonest here is you, by attacking my motives and integrity rather than addressing my points and then hypocritically accusing me of avoiding valid criticism.Knife wrote: ↑2019-10-23 12:54am Yeah, it comes across as you using that shit as a shield against actual valid criticism. Sure, it's art, it's subjective. But the character was flat, the character arc was both dumb and went now where. I didn't feel much in the way of chemistry with the actors. It felt forced (because it was) and was just there to get Finn out of the way so Poe could be deconstructed and Rey could do Rey stuff.
If you just don't like the character, fine. That's your right. Where it becomes a problem is when you a) insist that your dislike of the character is objectively correct, and b) dismiss valid concerns about racism and misogyny in the media as a way to smear me rather than addressing what I actually said (or perhaps because you don't want to admit that discussions of racism and sexism make you feel threatened).
I disagree but like I did say in my post, it's subjective.*Personally, while Rose is not one of my very favorites, like Luke, Lando, Yoda, or Ahsoka, I thought that she was a fairly well-written character
I really don't think her attitude was that plausible in those circumstances. They were facing certain death and the command structure looked to be hastening it. Cheery optimism isn't something you usually see there except for insane people. Grim humor sure, people who convince themselves they are already dead and then doing stupid shit to save others? Sure. Panic and selfish shit? Sure. Cheery optimism? No. It was flat and dumb.who's actions were plausible given her circumstances
Except for Finn was the ordinary soldier for the enemy who defected. Rey was the ordinary person from Planet Nowhere who discovered she had powers, and Poe was the ordinary fighter pilot of the Resistance. Ok he's a hot shot pilot but no powers and no nobility. He's the 'normal' guy. All the cast members are supposed to be the 'ordinary' view. It's over done. Now Rose is the ordinary ordinary, normal, super not super, ordinary normal person view. It's flat and boring and way over done to the point of a trope.who gave us a perspective (that of the ordinary Rebel/Resistance soldier) that we hadn't really seen before in a main cast member
So forced, so very forced. And so very much what I said in my last post.and who brought out an aspect of Finn's character we hadn't previously seen (his interactions with Rose help him to see the galaxy from her point of view, and motivate his decision to embrace the Resistance cause, not merely because his afraid of the First Order or because his friends are fighting in it, but because he believes the cause itself is worthwhile).
What am I missing? Oh, you mean the first Asian-American woman, so some of diversity not all diversity. In addition to, of course, being a first for diversity in casting.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

It wasn't Endor in ROTJ either, it was an Endor moon. Hopefully the ocean moon of Kef Bir is another of Endor's moons or another planet in the same system, even if that doesn't make much sense either.Elheru Aran wrote: ↑2019-10-24 10:52am For crying out loud.

There's only so much incomprehensible shattering of SoD I can take. Hosnian was bad enough; gravity bombs in SPAAAAAACE in TLJ pushed it *hard*... but if Death Star 2 is on a completely different planet than it was orbiting originally, and has Palpatine in there somewhere...Galvatron wrote: ↑2019-10-24 02:36pmWhy not? I'm just anticipating some revelation that the Resistance horses are riding on that star destroyer's hull in the vacuum of SPAAAAAACE.

Re: Rise of Skywalker news.
The horse riding looks very much like it is taking part on a planet, possibly the same planet that has the First Order ISD seemingly breaking through the ground and TIE fighters swarming around some sort of ice fortress.
That said, the background of that shot shows even more ISDs in the background which looks silly.
The combined trailer footage keeps going back to an atmosphere of lightning / nebula based effects so either this is all taking place on the same planet or is this going to be some sort of 'Force Storm' effect ?

Why didn't you have a problem with the gravity bombs in SPAAAAAACE in *checks notes* The Empire Strikes Back, Rogue One, Rebels and (probably) the Clone Wars?Elheru Aran wrote: ↑2019-10-24 05:37pm There's only so much incomprehensible shattering of SoD I can take. In the meantime, everything I assumed about the KoR was wrong.

I've said in the past that the conception of Ben murdering Luke's students immediately after dropping a hut on his head was based on a lot of assumptions. I just had no idea just how many. With the new jedi school in ruins and fellow students hot on his trail for the murder of their master, Ben Solo flees to the only friend he has left in the galaxy…a man named Snoke. But Snoke has plans for Ben…and ideas about the Force that are as dangerous as they are intriguing for the troubled young jedi.
If Ben wishes to be truly free…the answers might lie with the dark side. And with the Knights of Ren!
But it won’t be the first time he’s tangled with the Knights. In the past, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker journeys to the Unknown Regions and brings young Ben along for the mission. Can even Luke Skywalker stand against the fabled Knights of Ren?!

Re: Rise of Skywalker news.
Given that the calculated effects of the Death Star wreckage crashing down to Endor were fatal to all life, and that this canonically did not happen, it can be reasonably concluded that the wreckage was tided up and dumped somewhere else.Elheru Aran wrote: ↑2019-10-24 10:52am For crying out loud.

We never (I'm fairly sure) saw the bomb-dropping mechanism inside those ships before. Also, I got the impression in those films that the "bombs" were actually being fired downwards. Unless there's something in an episode of Rebels or Clone Wars I haven't seen yet.

Re: Rise of Skywalker news.
I thought TLJ was largely terrible, but I have no problem with the bombers. This video says it better than I could though...
For me the bigger question is: why didn't they use these bombers against Starkiller Base when it became clear that the X-wings couldn't inflict enough damage on its thermal oscillator with their own payloads? Were they not available at the time? Didn't TFA take place mere days before TLJ?

Re: Rise of Skywalker news.
Shit, I posted the wrong damn video (although it's relevant too). This is the one I meant to post...
Re: Rise of Skywalker news.
For the ones that came out during the age of the internet these violations were noted at length immediately upon release. In the case of TESB, it's been brought up on many occasions and was a fan criticism long before nerds gathered on message boards.
The TESB example isn't a good one for this particular comparison though. Those bombs are not moving by free-fall gravity unless the asteroid they were over is several times the mass of Earth given the observed velocity. I still think its a bad scene as it adds nothing necessarily to the movie and brings up the question which is a suspension of disbelief breaking. Then again because no portion of the plot rests on it, it's more forgettable even in the moment. Overall its forgiven along with so many other quibbles within TESB because it's in a good movie that has credibility with the audience to trade for contrivance.
Re: Rise of Skywalker news.
In each instance its pretty obvious the bombs are being lobbed. Ultimately its just SW doing its usual thing of aping the aesthetic of WW2.SpottedKitty wrote: ↑2019-10-28 06:20pm We never (I'm fairly sure) saw the bomb-dropping mechanism inside those ships before. IIRC the bombers were in a different star system doing something else (some sort of relief mission?) and couldn't make it back in time.Galvatron wrote: ↑2019-10-28 09:22pm I thought TLJ was largely terrible, but I have no problem with the bombers. This video says it better than I could though...

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until I see the film (I don't expect high realism in a Star Wars film), but I can't help but wonder if this is going to be the moment when the phrase "jumping the shark" is replaced with "riding on the space ship".

Youtube is such a hellpit that of course some dumbass would make a video like this (I refuse to dignify it with a click), but it's clearly not the vacuum of space. The Romulan Republic wrote: ↑2019-11-28 12:14am I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until I see the film (I don't expect high realism in a Star Wars film), but I can't help but wonder if this is going to be the moment when the phrase "jumping the shark" is replaced with "riding on the space ship".
Pretty sure that's the dais upon which Vader's melted helmet sits.
Anyway, I'm pretty hype.

Yeah a few people complained it was very 'MCU', but I read a good observation that said you can trace that kind of humor back to "they have a cave troll" of LOTR. Which made me dislike it less

The MCU-style dialogue doesn't annoy me nearly as much as the pretense that flying troopers are something new.

I miss the days when Star Wars characters regarded their amazing technology with the same nonchalance that we'd have for an everyday toaster. Unless that technology happened to be a moon-sized superweapon, that is.
