Auroras are expensive, though - 2500/bomber and they're exceptionally vulnerable on the egress. If you're playing against the US or China you could hit powerplants first to take out static defenses (assuming that they don't have rocket soldiers everywhere) and then hit other targets, but it's somewhat difficult not to have them die.Uraniun235 wrote:If USA gets multiple Particle Beams up, they can swiftly shut down their opponent. The Beam is the fastest-recharging superweapon in game, and one strike can destroy an Airfield easy. Coupled with the near-omniscience the USA can achieve with it's Detention Centers, and the guaranteed-hit Aurora bombers, USA can really fuck an opponent up starting from the base down.
Granted, that's if you let them tech that high to begin with, but then an Overlord assault is rather expensive as well given the $2000 cost per tank and the $7500 needed to get the Nuclear Tanks upgrade.
I was playing one of the 'money' maps for 3v3. Well, two guys on the same side left the game - and then the remaining guy promptly built something like six SCUD Storms and huge numbers of quad cannons and rocket soldiers in a multilayered defense(!)Darth Wong wrote:Personally, I think C&C Generals could use a "no superweapons" toggle in multiplayer games (Red Alert 2 had it). I imagine there are probably a lot of players who build heavy chokepoint defenses and then turtle into their bases so they can build hordes of superweapons.
Talk about turtling the base, only coordinated nuclear strikes and particle beam hits managed to take him out.

It's all about the arms race. With Auroras, you have a guaranteed hit on an enemy structure; coupled with the guaranteed hit of the Particle Beam, it's easier for a USA player to keep his opponent stripped of superweapon power. Or, if they give up building superweapons, to start killing their other structures... *grr* And China and GLA don't have "guaranteed hit" weapons; it's possible for a USA player to fend off enemy attacks on his power/supers.Auroras are expensive, though - 2500/bomber and they're exceptionally vulnerable on the egress. I really wish units could guard specific units; that way you could have a jet squadron escort a tank formation automatically. And I think the Nuke Cannon should work like the Tiberian Sun Nod artillery; spefically order it to deploy/undeploy, and it stays there unless otherwise commanded. As it is, when you tell it to guard it will fire, undeploy, redeploy, then fire again.

It's still economically unviable. It costs $10,000 to build 4 Auroras, not including the airfield which you probably want to buy regardless, so you can build choppers. But 4 Auroras don't hit hard enough to take out hardened targets like command centres, and I don't think they can take out a SCUD storm either. It also costs $10,000 to build two particle-beam cannons, and while you must also have a couple of power plants to feed them, they can do more damage than the Auroras, and they won't get blown away immediately after dropping their payload.Uraniun235 wrote:It's all about the arms race. Nuke cannons are shitty for guard duty because they fire so slowly and do that damned deploy/redeploy thing. They're also stupid, and will wipe out your own forces if the enemy is using fast vehicles and manages to get close. One unconventional way to deploy them is to use them like minefields, in order to deny certain avenues of approach to the enemy by using the ctrl-key to force-fire on a piece of land. They will sit there and continually pound the living shit out of the targeted territory without any of this deploy/redeploy bullshit or any risk of them stupidly firing on fast-moving attackers even when they're in the midst of your defenses.I really wish units could guard specific units; that way you could have a jet squadron escort a tank formation automatically. Infantry bothering you? How about a nice cup o' anthrax? Available from scud storm, scud missile launchers, agricultural equipment, even tank rounds can contain anthrax!
There's athrax in the tanks,
there's anthrax in the ranks.
You can get it from a scud,
and you can leave it in the mud.
There's athrax over here,
there's anthrax over there,
there's anthrax in the air,
there's anthrax everywhere!

(Actually, I have both nuke cannons and the inferno cannons doing it, so I have combined firestorms/ nuclear explosions/ radiation)- works like a charm.

Well, on the subject of superweapon whoring, my friend and I (both GLA) were screwing around vs. 6 random comps. After cleaning up all but one, I told him to leave the last for me. I built five SCUD Storms, placed beacons in the enemy base (I was green, so they looked like real markers ), then launched them all simultaneously... good fun, good fun, especially with Anthrax Beta. Between charge times we would simulate "rebellions" in the villages using Ambush or other forces and kill each other, and we made bets on who would win - an elite Technical, or my Anthrax Bomb.

I find this whole anthrax thing extremely annoying. If they drop a bomb into your base / fire scud storm it will take several minutes for that stuff to disappear.Infantry bothering you? (And chinese don't have decontamination equipment like the US)

Personally, I only buid enough SW to kill the enemies superweapons. If they don't have one, I use the SW on attack groups moving towards my base. A pair of particle cannons can really make a mess of an Overlord rush, like you can imagine.
