Hmmmm does this violate the Geneva Convention? Will anyone here try and twist it around and claim 'the US does the same thing chris so don't be a hypocrite'? This is disgusting and it infuriates me.

You don't understand Colonel, by supporting the Crypto-fascist American dictatorship and its Imperialist running dogs this Marine was BEGGING to have his corpse defiled by the "enlightened" masses of the Iraqi military. These brave defenders of Islam were merely reminding the US just how callous and cruel US Foreign policy can be, now his corpse is a reminder to all that the Hussein regime is merely a reflection of the deep hatred that simmers in the MIddle East a hatred this Marine helped to perpetuate.
Just wanted to head off any rabid peace nik that would IN ANY WAY try to defend this action. Whenever you try moral equivalism between the US and the regimes it battles against there's always an incident that strikes the borderlines VERY CLEARLY between the two. THIS is evil. Not "misunderstanding" not "caught up in the moment" not "just rewards for US foreign policy" This was desecration of war dead ladies and gentlemen.

I wonder who desecrated the body and hung him-- as in, a military unit or some such. I'd not be surprised to find out if it was on orders. This will anger our soldiers and goad them into angry acts against civilians, feeding the propaganda machine.
Folks like Peter "Fonda" Arnett are telling the Iraqis that the 'anti-war movement in the US is growing' with each day they hold out. And in General Nguyen Vo Giap's book the North Vietnamese admit that they held out because they knew that war protesters in America would win the war for them by putting pressure on the gov't to cave in.
Clever, evil bastards.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

Judgeing by the reaction I should have put my post in the General insted of breaking news.. the Iraqis are going to keep pushing this shit hoping for a reaction.. You have to wonder why 15 iraqis would try and run the checkpoint... HMMMMMMM
Sudden power is apt to be insolent, sudden liberty saucy; that behaves best which has grown gradually.
Yes, anyone who does this is a savage. The applicable rule of war is Article 15 of the First Geneva Convention:
At all times, and particularly after an engagement, Parties to the conflict shall, without delay, take all possible measures to search for and collect the wounded and sick, to protect them against pillage and ill-treatment, to ensure their adequate care, and to search for the dead and prevent their being despoiled. Whenever circumstances permit, an armistice or a suspension of fire shall be arranged, or local arrangements made, to permit the removal, exchange and transport of the wounded left on the battlefield.

Who does this?
A group of people very pissed off at having their nation invaded.
A group of people with a long and proud ethnic background of repression by Western powers.
Who doesn't do this?
NOT THE AMERICANS - I want you to watch CNN, NBC, Fox, whatever. Tell me how many times you see images of Iraqi soldiers dead in the field. How many times did you see it in Afghanistan?
Not the British - BBC World has shown the same images, though they haven't had Brit Soldiers posing with the kills.
Not the Australians - ABC, 9, 7 and 10 have all run images of the dead soldiers.
So they display the body publically, yes its fucking disgraceful. But we the enlightened west transmit images of soldiers standing over the bodies of our enemies like a trophy hunter, live to a global audience.

Ando, the outrage is over the desecration of the body, not the publication of pictures (which I'm not even sure took place in this incident). Obviously motivated by a combination of mob mentality and hatred.
Mind you, while it is certainly unjustifiable and in violation of all rules of war, I consider it less scandalous than pretending to surrender and then opening fire. As bad as it is, the dude was already dead.

Indeed, but having soldiers posing with the dead enemy for cameras isn't as bad?Darth Wong wrote:Ando, the outrage is over the desecration of the body, not the publication of pictures (which I'm not even sure took place in this incident). I seem to recall disciplinary action being taken against troops who did that in Afghanistan.weemadando wrote:Indeed, but having soldiers posing with the dead enemy for cameras isn't as bad?Darth Wong wrote:Ando, the outrage is over the desecration of the body, not the publication of pictures (which I'm not even sure took place in this incident). And a people who FINALLY get a chance to kill someone who killed some of their countrymen. Lord knows they couldn't do it in their OWN country. These people hardly had a nation left to invade, what with Sadaam in power. Rather, they had a collection of militant soldiers and oppressive people within their own society. Western culture was not the cause of their repression. It was their own government. Get your facts straight.weemadando wrote:Who does this?

You're missing the point. First off, at least in America, there are no GRAPHIC depictions of dead bodies. They are mounds of nothing more than soldier's uniforms along the side of the road. Yes, those heaps are dead Iraqi soldiers, but I defy you to show me a media outlet that has covered this war, whatever their bias, and has not shown a picture of a dead body. Besides that, Al Jazeera showed images of dead American soldiers that were MORE THAN JUST A LITTLE GRAPHIC. These images weren't just lumps on the ground. Oh no. These were 2.5x zoom shots of bullet holes in a soldier's forehead. Yes, these pictures exist of Iraqis, too, but they are by no means made readily available for mass public consumption. You have to LOOK for them.So they display the body publically, yes its fucking disgraceful. But we the enlightened west transmit images of soldiers standing over the bodies of our enemies like a trophy hunter, live to a global audience.
The press is to blame for the faults of the media, not the country they represent. Another reason to hate corporations.
The issue at hand is the treatment of the body of the American soldier. Maybe we do push Iraqi soldiers to the side of the road once they have fallen, but we most certainly do NOT ship the bodies back to the US for public display / mutilation. We're WORLDS more civilized than that, and to deny that proposition is to define ignorance.

Actually, this is totally normal for those fighting Western armies, from non-Western armies. Throughout recorded history, from the days of the Greeks through to the Zulus, when a group of local warriors or a foreign (or native) army had defeated westerners, usually invading their lands, they paid such a high price to do it - because the inherent superiourity western culture provides to our system of armament, our discipline, and the morale of our troops, who fight because they are free and not because of rewards or out of fear and have a system of combat organized flexibility around that free culture - the result was slaughter of captives and mutilation of corpses.
It's almost universal in victories of against western armies. To brave the awesome hail of gunfire and then to break a square of bayonets? Or even to onrush against heavy bronze armour and the steady and regimented rows of iron pike-heads? Western armies invariably inflicted awesome ratios against the enemy, and when the survivors overran them, or even dragged off a few, or found a few of the enemy on the field - They vented their rage upon them in extreme fashion. Their own methods of ceremonial, or individualistic, or delay, manoeuvre-based warfare were insufficient against Western Decisive Battle, and when they were finally able to kill one of the enemy the inevitable rage of helplessness set in. The Iraqis, facing an enemy which has perhaps by now killed on the order of 30,000 of their number for the loss of less than a hundred, are merely responding in the exact same way that non-western armies have when presented with the opportunity, for millenia. It is a natural response of a human being in warfare, finding his defences nearly useless and the onslaught of his enemy terrifying.

Why does this surprise anyone?
Fuckit this sort of thing has been going on for over two millenia.
Just be glad they didn't cut the guy's genitals off, which is also fairly common.

And as usual Ando makes excuses for any anti-US action no matter how barbaric.
It's abosultely revolting that they would mutilate a body and it certainly violates the rules of civilized warfare. I'm not suprised given the barbaric conduct of the Iraqis thus far. Of course one can always hope they'd behave civilly.

You know what's funny? If this had taken place in America in a time of peace, and the soldier was murdered and hung up for public consumption after being dragged around the streets, the only crime we could convict that man of is murder, because dead bodies have no rights. Hell, after the victim is dead, the body can be raped, mutilated, set aflame, chopped into little itty bitty pieces and served as an hors d'oeuvre, and the only thing we could get that bastard for is murder.Stormbringer wrote:And as usual Ando makes excuses for any anti-US action no matter how barbaric.
