No, the Mayor has plans to expand the city parks district onto the island that Meigs currently is located on. The renovations to the area around Meigs has been highly profitable for the city and Daly has been waging a 10 year legal battle to expel the airport. Looks like he finally decided to say "screw it" and exercised executive control and ordered it shut down.

Governor Ryan & Mayor Daley agree on deal that will assure the life of Meigs Field.
On Wednesday, December 5, 2001, the "Coolest Little Airport on the Planet" received new life: An extension of its life by 4-24 years or longer.
At a joint press conference, IL Gov. Ryan and Mayor Richard Daley announced a comprehensive agreement on airport capacity for the Chicago region, a plan that includes keeping Meigs Field open for up to 24 or more years (with some conditions, including an option for the Illinois Legislature to vote Meigs out of existence as early as 2006.)
In all respect, there is one angle in this that you are avoiding. The O'Hare Expansion Agreement between Chicago, the State, and in it's final stage in the US Senate.
One clause in that agreement calls for Meigs Fld. to remain open until 2026. There is a rider that allows it to be closed in 2006 under very specific conditions.
By Daily violating the terms of that agreement, the entire agreement is most likely null and void. The result of this means that billions of $ that Daily and Chicago can lose. $ that were earmarked for Daily cronies in construction contracts.

I am about a half mile from Meigs Field. Daley's wife had earlier proposed turning Meigs Field into a park, and that is exactly what is going to happen. Shutting down Meigs will cost Chicago millions in lost revenue, but what Maggie Daley wants, Maggie Daley gets. The Daley family, and its minions and loyalists, see the Daley family as a political dynasty on a par with the old European royal families, and they embrace and revel in autocratic rule. The Daleys are very dangerous. They are trying to export their reign, with all its oppression and tyranny, to the rest of the state. The Daleys are in the forefront of the gun-ban proposals that are now before the State General Assembly. His bill even included a provision to have all Illinois gun owners register in the same manner as convicted sex offenders! The bill not only increased the fee for the state-required Firearm Owner Identification Card (FOID) from $5 for 5 years to $25 PER YEAR (clearly a tax on a constitutionally protected right), but also required gun owners to ANNUALLY presen themselves to their local police depratment to be photographed and fingerprinted, and to submit to questioning by the police as to their firearm use over the preceding year, and then if the police like what they hear they would at that time "grant" the citizen the "right" to possess firearms for another year. The bill also woul doutlaw ALL sem-automatic firearms, of whatever make, model or caliber. This evil bill is being vigorously fought against in the State legislature, with some success.

Even more of a reason not to go to Chicago.
BTW, isn't Chicago one of the city councils that attempted to sue firearms manufacturers?
