I'd think police forces having risen out of slave catching patrols, for-profit slave labour prisons, the assassination of black equality leader, and Rodney King would have proven that. It's sad that for a lot of people worldwide it still needs proving.loomer wrote: ↑2020-08-24 12:22am Kenosha is the freshest case of police homicide. That's only true of American police. I'm not saying policing in the rest of the world doesn't have problems, but it's not like the entire concept is inherently oppressive.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

Canadian police aren't exactly bastions of integrity as well given their relationships with the homeless population and native communities.
Mexican police have long been held in the sway of the cartels to the point that it has at times looked like a full blown war between cartel forces and government forces in some regions.
Even in countries with 'good' police forces, they don't exists to protect and serve but to maintain the statues quo regardless of how injust it may or may not be. No force which is designed to uphold laws written to benefit certain classes of people more than others can possibly serve as a force for good.

See for instance any police force that descends from a colonial occupation force (e.g. South Africa or even Ireland in some ways) or has a history of strike breaking, union busting, or suppressing specific political movements like anarchism, communism, and socialism. All things that US law enforcement have also historically done, I might add.Jub wrote: ↑2020-08-24 02:11pmCanadian police aren't exactly bastions of integrity as well given their relationships with the homeless population and native communities.

The nature of policing is inherently oppressive as the nature of policing is the imposition of a select body of armed men charged with enforcing the state's will on its subjects by violence, sorry!

They've set fire to the Kenosha DOC building. Protip: If your justice system 'malfunctions' so badly that people set it on fire, it's not actually a justice system.

The Wisconsin National Guard has been deployed to Kenosha, Wis., after a Black man was shot several times at close range in the back during an encounter with police over the weekend.
The shooting was caught on video that has since gone viral on social media, sparking outrage.
Gov. Tony Evers said the guard troops would support local law enforcement officials but added it would not be an extended deployment, according to a Monday afternoon statement.
"Every person should be able to express their anger and frustration by exercising their First Amendment rights and report on these calls to action without any fear of being unsafe," Evers said.
"This is a limited mobilization of the National Guard focused on supporting the needs of local first responders to protect critical infrastructure, such as utilities and fire stations, and to ensure Kenoshians are able to assemble safely."
The governor did not give a time frame for how long the guardsmen would remain in the city.
Protesters took to the streets Sunday evening into the early hours of Monday in Kenosha, roughly 40 miles south of Milwaukee. In the video, a man identified as Jacob Blake is seen being shot multiple times as he leaned inside a vehicle.
He was taken to a Milwaukee hospital. Officials said he was in serious condition.

The US doesn't have a justice system. It has a legal system, deliberately built from the group up to keep the plebes in line while enriching those in power. The US has just been more brazen about it, taking advantage of the indoctrination we learn early on in grade school to get away with sctions that should have started shit decades ago, were it not for the ingrained and enforced belief that only peacefully marching up and down the street is the only legitimate way to protest and the cancerous mantra of "violence is never the answer."

Heavily armed civilians have been filmed patrolling outside businesses in Kenosha after arsonists set buildings alight, torching much of the black business district Monday.
In footage taken by a local reporter, a small group of men can be seen carrying rifles and wearing combat gear as they protect local shops. They deny they are part of a militia.

Live feeds and twitter from people there. Anoncat isn't unimpeachable but is doing a good job collecting the various bits of footage so far.

Oh the "violence isn't the answer" is definitely abused. And while the police in it's current form needs to go those people who say it should be abolished are inviting anarchy and ignoring that even amongst Black Americans most DONT'T want to disband the police

Black people simply want police to treat them fairly. Are they all brainwashed? Mariame Kaba and Angela Davis would certainly seem to think so

What I’m saying is that abolitionists would dismiss those black people as brainwashed fools. Kaba views police as an evil to be abolished. And yet the poll I cited clearly shows that most black people don’t want that.
Re: Conflict erupts at Minneapolis, L.A. protests over George Floyd death
And this has relevance to the merits of abolitionism why exactly? I assume you have a reason to state that they'd view 'those black people' as brainwashed fools too, right - one supported by the text?

Because of how strident Kaba and Davis are and how they see the police as a scourge to be eliminated. Kaba's article absolutely oozed a zero sum attitude.loomer wrote: ↑2020-08-26 05:28amAnd this has relevance to the merits of abolitionism why exactly? Sorry, that doesn't establish either that 'popular demand' is an element of abolitionist proposals or that Kaba or Davis consider all non-abolitionists to be victims of false consciousness (and, c'mon. There's a legitimate argument to be made there and you picked the weakest example because Kaba's op-ed article that you're referring to is one of the most reasonable. You know better than to burst in yelling about something without being able to actually back it by now, surely.)Darth Yan wrote: ↑2020-08-26 05:52amBecause of how strident Kaba and Davis are and how they see the police as a scourge to be eliminated. It's up to 2 dead from the shooter now.

Re: Conflict erupts at Minneapolis, L.A. protests over George Floyd death
They've arrested the shooter, and regime forces are being deployed to quell dissent. Standard tactics from what I can gather so far - they're snatch and grabbing people into unmarked vehicles and taking them to unknown destinations.
Given that the shooter was observed collaborating with the police and they were themselves observed planning to steer protestors into the militias, we're getting real close to the stage of totalitarianism where informal militias are used to enforce state terror.

Good Jesus fucking Lord Almighty...I was over at Banned.Video (NSFW) to check out footage from the Kenosha Riots and I about lost my dinner seeing the close up of the guy who got his arm shot (3:20). They'll probably have to amputate; there is literally a gaping hole where his bicep should be.
It's interesting to note that the guy in the beginning of the video wearing the red shirt yelling "Shoot me N***a!" ended up being the first rioter to get shot.

You actually might be surprised by how salvageable that wound might be. Just about one of the few bright sides of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is the US medical system's expertise in gunshot trauma has grown by leaps and bounds. It's one of the reason the murder rate in Chicago hasn't exploded even higher with all the shootings. The docs and surgeons have learned all these lessons from military doctors regarding the wounds.

Portland quickly turned into chaos again. During the daytime hours, Trump supporters backed by Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer staged a demonstration of their own; There's some footage of paintball guns being fired at BLM/Antifa along with fistfights breaking out, etc. but no extreme violence. However, later in the night, at ~8:45pm a man was shot and killed...he was reportedly one of the Patriot Prayer guys. Video is all over twitter, youtube and facebook, so I won't rehash it here plus I can't take watching this crap for much longer.
From what i heard, an autistic kid at 4chan combed through older protest footage and photos and found a man whose description matches very closely what witnesses described; although he was masked he had a very distinct raised fist tattoo on his neck. None of this part is confirmed; officially Portland PD has not released any suspect information at this time.
