CNN wrote:US Air Force officer and test pilot Chuck Yeager, known as "the fastest man alive," has died at the age of 97.
His wife Victoria tweeted from Yeager's verified Twitter account on Monday night that the World War II flying ace died just before 9 p.m. ET.
"An incredible life well lived, America's greatest pilot," she tweeted.
Yeager broke the sound barrier when he tested the X-1 in October 1947, although the feat was not announced to the public until 1948.
Born and raised in West Virginia, Yeager joined the Air Force at age 18 in 1941 and was assigned to the Army Air Corps, according to his website.

The man fought in war, had a career as a military test pilot... and died in bed in his 90's. Not a bad run.
Although I'd prefer the title read "has slipped the surly bonds..." rather than "passed away".
No cause of death given so far, but at 97 "old age" is most likely.

Can you recommend a good book on his life?

A legend among test pilots took a flight into the afterlife today. I hope it was all clear skies with plenty of room to throttle up.

One of West Virginia's Favorite Sons. We named Charleston's Airport after him.
After he flew the X-1, he took a small single-engine plane and flew beneath the South Side Bridge in Charleston on a dare. If all the people who claimed to have been there to see it had been there, it'd have been half the town! LOL!

Me: Nope, that's why I have you around to tell me.
Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.
