Need help with DVD

Post by Darth Wong »

Does anybody have any tricks for making a DVD-R work on standalone DVD player? I've digitized my old Star Wars Classic Edition (you know, the version that will never be released on DVD) laserdiscs, encoded them to MPEG-2, and I'm trying to write them to DVD so I can play them on my standalone. But it only plays for 9 seconds and then dies.

What bugs me is that the disc plays perfectly on PowerDVD in my computer DVD-ROM drive; it just won't play more than 9 seconds on my standalone! I'm stuck with a Star Wars DVD that only works in a computer DVD-ROM drive, and what the fuck use is that?

Aaarrrgghhhh!!!

EDIT: before anyone else brings it up, it is completely legal to copy my laserdisc to a different format for personal use because of fair use rights which supersede any demands made by the copyright holder, so don't fucking get on my case about copyright law.

I don't think DVD-R is compatible with regular DVD players.

But IIRC, DVD-R+ is compatible. The problem is that the burner drives are about $400-500, and the discs themselves cost ~$10 a piece.

If worst comes to worst, I can give you the e-mail addy of the guy I bought my Original Trilogy Non-Special Edition DVDs from. They're pressed DVDs, not DVD-Rs, and aside from some out of sync audio for about 10 minutes in Empire, they're great.

Fucking tell me about it. I forked over big cash for a DVD+R drive, and the discs are so expensive, it's almost not even worth it. Almost. And the price at Fry's is usually ~3 for $20 for Memorex DVD+R.

Mind sending it to me as well? I'd love to get the original editions on DVD... I tried downloading some VCD images of the original a while back, but I was only able to get the first section of ANH before other things interfered.

I wanna through my lot in with the others. Mike, if you get this working, I'll buy a copy off you too.

People, THAT's piracy! Now, if you happily pay for the DVD and P&P, then I think that wouldn't be considered piracy, since Mike wouldn't be making any money out of it.

Mike, I think the problem is with your stand alone DVD player. Does it allow to read DVD-R's? If not, then I guess you'll have to fork for a new one. :(

I think it's safe to say that we all own the movies. Is it still illegal if Mike is "transfering them to a different medium" for us?

Interesting ... I just tried it on my other players. It works fine on my other two DVD players, just not the one in my basement. But the time index doesn't work; the time clock still stops after a few seconds on all of the players, but the movie keeps playing. Looks good, though. I think I'll digitize all of the special extras that came with the THX box set too. Pisses me off about that one player in my basement, though.

Maybe the other players are more up to date? Is the one that's giving you problems older than the others? I dunno. Have you tried it on a PS2 yet? *doesn't even know if you have one*

I have no advice or suggestions about the DVD player in the basement or the timer looping.

I just want to express my jealousy for the fact you have the original trilogy on DVD format.

It's really a crapshot as to if a DVD-R will play in a conventional DVD player. There are too many competing standards, none of which are exactly like the conventional DVD standard (and so you get problems). The reflectivity of burned discs (CD or DVD) also tends to be lower, compounding the issue.

My own experience:

I bought one of those "History of Canada" documentaries (the one about the battle on the plains of Abraham) that was playing on CBC a while ago. It was clearly a burned DVD, it wouldn't play in the DVD drive (older Acer drive) on my computer, but would play on my Toshiba DVD player connected to the TV. I'm guessing it has something to do with the type of laser system (?) they're using.

I think that's what I was getting at, too. The newer models might have updated equipment that may be better suited to read burned discs.

Like Phong said, it's a crapshoot with DVD-R's and DVD players. This site has a list of most DVD players on the market, along with information on what kinds of discs they'll play (what color layer, CD-RW, CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, SVCD, XVCD, XSVCD, VCD, MP3, whatever, even some MPEG-4 ones that happen to play DivX CD's).

What bitrate did you encode the MPEG-2 at? Are you using AC3 or MP2 audio? What are you using to author the DVD?

Heh, I got a total of 4 DVD players in my room alone, that's including my ps2, X-Box, DVD ROM, and a standalone. That's not including the 2 others players that my parents and my sister have.

Huh, stops counting after 9 seconds? Smells like a timecode problem to me, but digital media is more up Durandal or Phong's alley.
