Ion blast effects in RPG

Post by Kazeite »

So, I have this dillema - I play SWRPG with my friends, a good o'l classic D6 system, (although it doesn't matter if this is D6 and not D20... I think) and we stumbled across some space pirates, and they fired some ion blast at us.
Ours shields have failed, we got disabled... and this is my question:

What exactly happens in RPG with disabled equipment? Is it totally busted and needs to be replaced? Or does it need to be merely rebooted or something?

I'd say that it probably needs some extensive repairs (electronics only), quite possibly several circuits fried and some breakers too. All the non-electronic part would be almost intact (moving parts, big chunks of metal). It's not an attack that temporarily turns off equipment either, IMO.

I don't think so. The larger scale and more military-use the electronics you're talking about; you may be looking to minor repairs fixing fuse or surge protection systems of somekind, as the Tyrant from ESB didn't have to be towed to a yard and have its electronics replaced because it got blasted by the Hoth planetary ion cannon.

Usually, each individual system needs to be repaired by someone, and if it is hit hard enough it can be completely destroyed.

I see... So, let's assume that if given system "is hit hard enough" (that is, if Ion damage roll exceeds hull damage roll by more than 20 (roll greater than 16 means that all controls are ionized), then random system gets toasted :)

Also, ionized system (like engines or weapons systems) is to be considered lightly damaged (but non-funcional until repaired), unless it's a electronics-heavy component, like sensor suite or something. In that case it is considered heavily damaged.

What do you think about that ideas?

Large capital ships must have a really big compliment of engineers. Inflight repairs are possible, and we don't know that the ships were 100% operational during the asteroid field chase. Some equipment must have simply shorted out, some was destroyed, there must be spare parts somewhere, etc. As I said, only electronics would be affected.
