My theory on the origin of stupidity in general
I hypothesize that the more public attention and involvement a person has, the more stupid they are or will become.
People such as certain actors, politicians, reporters, etc. These people receive much public focus and attention, and are also very publicly involved. They are also some of the most dumbest of people.
I think such a person's intelligence is somehow "drained away" by their audience in a way. Or perhaps it's because they do so much talking that stuff goes out from brain to outside but the person does it so much that there's no time for the person to make stuff from outside to go into the brain in return.
That is why us loners and no-lifers are so smart.
Comments?

Good hypothesis. I propose that "The Limelight" is really just a teleportation device for brain cells. So every time a celebrity steps into the spotlight, their brainpower is routed to some evil genius in Montana who is plotting to take over the world with his superior intellect.

I think alot of it has to do with the general public following "Celebretarianism" as Marilyn Manson put it. They say or do whatever the celebs say or do. So if the celebs are being idiots, and the general public is nothing more than their sock puppet, then you have the blind leading the blind.

My personal view is that stupidity is the natural state; it doesn't need a cause. This does not contradict the general maxim of your theory per se, as crowds tend to stifle rational thought. Intelligence simply atrophies from disuse, rather than being "drained away"--there is no evidence for any sort of 'Conservation of Intelligence' law; it is not necessary for it do "go somewhere else" for it to disappear from a person. Of course, in many cases it is never developed in the first place.Shinova wrote:I hypothesize that the more public attention and involvement a person has, the more stupid they are or will become... It depends on the kind of public involvement, then. Many politicians actually think about how to argue their positions and push their agendas; banal smalltalks and typical popular magazine interviews, on the other hand, correlate completely differently with intelligence. Politicians also have other politicians as opponents, ones who would shred any weakness they could, whereas the reporters usually have just the general public, which is comparatively unintelligent and much more credulous.Darth Wong wrote:Most actors and reporters seem to be morons. It is undoubtedly an important factor.Darth Wong wrote:Or maybe the irrational personality type is naturally drawn to fields in which objectivity is not necessary.

Stupidity isn't just the domain of groups, either. It's perfectly possible to be a highly intelligent person and yet fail to look both ways before crossing the street. Stupidity is a measure of how you're CURRENTLY using what brains you have, not what POTENTIAL you have to use them. That being the case, any number of distractions or physical processes or emotional states could cause a person to be purebred stupid.Kuroneko wrote:My personal view is that stupidity is the natural state; it doesn't need a cause. Agreed; in no way are crowds the singular cause. An intellectually lazy loner will become more and more stupid all by himself. It's just that in general crowds encourage intellectual laziness.Lagmonster wrote:Stupidity isn't just the domain of groups, either.
Agreed. Isolated lapses are expected; no one is perfect.Lagmonster wrote:It's perfectly possible to be a highly intelligent person and yet fail to look both ways before crossing the street.
I disagree; I believe intelligence is the disposition of a person to act with reason, and stupidity is the disposition to act without reason. Yes, some lapses are expected. Yes, some people have more potential than others. But all the potential in the world is not going to save you if you lack the will to exercise it. If, say, Euler reviled mathematical study despite his enormous (some would say unsurpassed) talent for it, then he would have been an ignoramus as far as mathematics is concerned. It's the same with general intelligence--you can have the potential for high intelligence, but if you don't actually engage in reason, you're still going to be mediocre at best.Lagmonster wrote:Stupidity is a measure of how you're CURRENTLY using what brains you have, not what POTENTIAL you have to use them. No, I don't believe our positions are the same. Taken out of context, those statements are essentially equivalent, yes, but the reason I believe they are different is because of the last sentence:verilon wrote:This is what I see.....equals...Lagmonster wrote:Stupidity is a measure of how you're CURRENTLY using what brains you have, not what POTENTIAL you have to use them.Kuroneko wrote:Yes, some people have more potential than others. (Emphasis mine)Lagmonster wrote:That being the case, any number of distractions or physical processes or emotional states could cause a person to be purebred stupid.
The way I see it, Lagmonster's position that stupidity is the lack of reason at a particular moment in time, whereas mine is that stupidity is the general disposition to act without reason. (Note: In no way does do I deny that intelligent people can commit stupid acts; I only posit that their tendency to do so is much lower than that of stupid people.) In other words, Lagmonster identifies stupidity with particular actions, whereas I identify it as more or less a "character trait".

Excuse me, for a min, cos I am in dire need of sleep (no surprise, me being me), but I see a blatant COULD in Lag's sentence. It COULD cause them to be stupid. But then, they COULD also choose to be stupid (by choice of not using brain).
The way I see it, you're both right ~ any number of things could cause a lack of decision, therefore making them stupid. [shrugs] It's just ramblings from a sleep depper, though.

You illustrate the difference right there. By my account, the person wouldn't be "made" stupid, even for the moment when they're committing a stupid action. It would be a matter of a momentary failure to apply intelligence despite having it. I regard intelligence and stupidity are fairly stable (if changeable at the long-term) traits of a person's character, and thus should not vary from one extreme to another from one moment to the next. Lagmonster's account, on the other hand, has stupidity appear or disappear as a function of the action the person is performing.verilon wrote:... It COULD cause them to be stupid. Re: My theory on the origin of stupidity in general
The sad thing is that, in journalism, one is supposed to strive for objectivity in reporting... at least, that's the way it used to be (albeit through my own rose-colored Nikon). I think basically the only really honest journalism left is independent journalism, because in Gonzo you can say, "Look, this is what I saw, this is what I did, this is what I think." When I did it under the stern and conniving auspices of an editor for the Big Boys, what I saw and reported was crammed through the filter of what The Press Officially Thinks.Darth Wong wrote:Most actors and reporters seem to be morons. As far as celebrities go, keep in mind that they've taken the high school Popularity Contest and turned it into their livelihoods. It isn't hard to guess what that results in.

Hey, also think about this, kids... sometimes people do stupid things on purpose. Haven't you ever wanted to pee in a hotel room sink for no better reason than that the guy at the front desk was an utter prick? Now, that's a really stupid thing to do, but I've done it. Why? Because doing the Smart Thing all the time can occasionally get tiresome! Being responsible and decent and civilized and an Upstanding Citizen all the time can eventually get on your nerves!
Now peeing in a sink is certainly not an intelligent thing to do! Most people would only do something stupid like that if they were drunk, but why pop for the booze? Who's going to know you weren't 'faced?
Wow. Ramble much, do I? But I think you see my point.

So one can't lead to the other, then? meh.. as I said though, just the ramblings of a sleep depper.. at that point, I had been up for an excess of 19 hours..Kuroneko wrote:You illustrate the difference right there. True, but then there are those that do it regardless. Much like the people that continuously drop soap from the dispensers on the sinks for no good reason... [growls] Many of them are kids, though. But then, do we call that stupid, or do we call that lack of knowledge of the fact that people do actually have to clean it up (some kids don't know that)? In the case of the adults, I'd assume that would be stupid and downright mean.Raoul Duke, Jr. wrote:Hey, also think about this, kids... sometimes people do stupid things on purpose. Well, stupidity being a general failure to apply common knowledge, I would say that it's the other way around -- kids dropping soap out of dispensers thinking that no one has to clean it up is stupid, because obviously common knowledge will inform a person that if they make a mess, it isn't going to clean itself. Adults doing this are just plain malicious, because they are considering the consequences and just don't give a fuck.verilon wrote:Raoul Duke, Jr. wrote:Hey, also think about this, kids... sometimes people do stupid things on purpose.
