All the people that used to shout "look her up" are now going apeshit because some other people shout "look him up".

Legally speaking nothing has happened, but if he keeps running his mouth against the judge's strong advice that advice is likely to turn into a gag order. This hasn't happened yet.

Re: Donald Trump Indicted in New York
His next court date for this case is December 4th, so not very much.
https://www.politico.com/news/2023/04/0 ... e-00090688Here are the important deadlines in the first criminal case ever brought against a former president.
About one week from Tuesday
Prosecutors are expected to turn over to Trump’s defense team the first tranche of discovery materials, consisting of grand jury minutes and exhibits, as well as notes of witness statements for those who testified before the grand jury.
Around June 10
Prosecutors are expected to give the defense the second tranche of discovery materials, including materials they received in response to subpoenas, other witness materials and some police documents.
Date unknown
Prosecutors will hand over a third tranche of discovery materials, including certain internal emails from the district attorney’s office that are considered discoverable under the law. “Obviously, defense is entitled to see every single email discovery in this case, but those email messages tend not to be the most significant materials,” one of the assistant district attorneys told the judge on Tuesday.
Aug. 8
All motions must be filed with the court. Trump’s defense attorneys could file a motion to dismiss the indictment, a motion to argue that the statute of limitations has expired, or motion to argue that the charges should be downgraded to misdemeanors.
Sept. 19
Prosecutors must file their responses to Trump’s motions.
Dec. 4
The next court date in the case. The judge will issue his decisions on the motions. Blanche, Trump’s attorney, asked the judge to excuse Trump from appearing in person at this hearing, citing the cost and burden of the security measures required by his visit to the courthouse, but the judge denied that request. The judge added, however, that “if a reason were to come up that your client was unable to appear on that date — something unanticipated — you can certainly run that by me.”
Re: Donald Trump Indicted in New York
Honestly, Trump would probably be more upset at the thought of people not knowing who he is than the prospect of going to jail.

If we're lucky. His attorneys will probably file extension after extension and drag this out until the election.

I have to wonder what effects it will have on Trump's campaign if he manages to provoke the judge into issuing some sort of gag order.
Re: Donald Trump Indicted in New York
I thought this too when I heard how late in the year the next court date was going to be. Just... completely unserious, aren't they?
There's a part of me that thinks Bragg knows how uninteresting his case is, and he's giving room to the other prosecutors to make their move in the summer and autumn.

Even if Il Douche got convicted, he'd be in club fed for maybe a year at most.
And people wonder why I hope for more direct action on the part of the populace. It's not like the government will ever do anything to improve, and our halfassed Order system is worthless.
Yes, "order" system. It's certainly not a "legal" system, since so many are beyond and above the law, and it is by no means a Justice system, since justice is anathema to the entire corrupt edifice.
So, order system it is. It "keeps the peace" and is "the best we have" and any other excuse put forth by politicians and academics protected by armed thugs and totally just laws in their gated communities.
Never underestimate the ingenuity and cruelty of the Irish.

I wish the court would treat Trump as if he was a poor, black person.

Then he'd be spending the time between Indictment and Trial in an Upstate Jail somewhere, with no bail.

How much would a regular person get for the crimes he has been indicted for ?Highlord Laan wrote: ↑2023-04-11 09:08amEven if Il Douche got convicted, he'd be in club fed for maybe a year at most.
As for prison time, a big complication there is his secret service protection.

What's required is changing the Former Presidents Act such that it should be revoked in such cases.bilateralrope wrote: ↑2023-04-12 12:20amHow much would a regular person get for the crimes he has been indicted for ?Highlord Laan wrote: ↑2023-04-11 09:08amEven if Il Douche got convicted, he'd be in club fed for maybe a year at most.

That won't do anything about Trump. Unless you want to get into retroactive laws. But it could be useful for the next criminal president.
The best compromise I can see is Trump getting house arrest, but with similar restrictions on visitors and outside communication to a prison. We don't need him to suffer, we just need him silenced.

Well, I suppose he could always be sent into tax exile then...

Re: Donald Trump Indicted in New York
The standoff between Jim Jordan and Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, explained
This week, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg filed a lawsuit against House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan in an effort to block Republicans’ demands that witnesses testify before Congress and produce documents related to the indictment of former President Donald Trump.
Trump’s indictment sparked widespread condemnation by Republicans, and the back-and-forth between Jordan and Bragg highlights how aggressively the GOP has defended the former president against an effort it claims is politically driven. The House investigation, ultimately, is a means to find some evidence that the indictment is a political attack, to defuse its severity, and to distract voters from the charges.
Bragg’s lawsuit follows ongoing attacks Republicans have made on this case. In early April, a Manhattan grand jury indicted Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money that was paid to former porn performer Stormy Daniels.
Ahead of the indictment, Jordan and two other Republican committee chairs sent Bragg a letter requesting his testimony and demanding documents tied to the Trump investigation. Bragg’s office responded to that letter defending his work, and argued at the time that there was no place for federal lawmakers to interfere in a New York state criminal case.
Since the indictment came down, Jordan has intensified his investigation into Bragg’s case against Trump, and issued a subpoena to Mark Pomerantz, a former senior prosecutor who worked in the DA’s office and who has expressed disagreement about how some aspects of the case were handled. The GOP alleges that Pomerantz declined to voluntarily participate, following guidance from the New York DA’s office not to do so.
Bragg’s lawsuit aims to counter what he describes as a “transparent campaign to intimidate and attack” his office and its charges against the former president. Specifically, the lawsuit seeks to stymie the subpoena for Pomerantz, and to block Republicans from requiring testimony from other witnesses in the DA’s office. Jordan has responded to the lawsuit via tweet, describing it as an attempt to “block congressional oversight.”
A judge has not granted Bragg’s request to block this subpoena, but one could still do so. The court is set to hold a hearing on the suit on April 19.
House Republicans are targeting Bragg as they try to defend Trump
House Republicans’ attacks on Bragg go beyond his spat with Jordan. GOP lawmakers from the speaker to rank-and-file members have aggressively gone after the Manhattan DA as they’ve mounted a vocal defense of Trump.
“Alvin Bragg has irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy previously said in a tweet. “The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account.”
Another attack that Republicans have used is pointing out that Bragg used federal funds to conduct his investigation. Bragg’s office has responded by noting that it’s used about $5,000 in federal dollars in order to conduct investigations into Trump and his companies, including litigation over access to his tax returns. These funds come from federal forfeiture funds the DA’s office helped collect, and not federal grant programs, Bragg’s office said.
Jordan’s investigation and demands for testimony and documents are a major part of the push to continue going after Bragg. By calling Bragg’s motivations and the legitimacy of his case into question, Republicans hope to defuse — or at least distract from — the charges against Trump. In doing so, they’re also showing their supporters how hard they’re advocating for the former president, who maintains a strong grip on the GOP base, whether or not they actually obtain the testimony and documents they’ve requested.
As Kaleigh Rogers has written for FiveThirtyEight, House Republicans’ demands for information in an active criminal investigation are unprecedented, and convincing a court to enforce a subpoena regarding an active criminal case is poised to be tough.
Still, the House GOP has made it clear it plans to try. And it is only expanding its attacks on the DA. Next week, Jordan intends to hold a field hearing in New York City focused on crime in the city that once again goes after Bragg.

If Jordan is going so hard against the hush money charges, I wonder if he will have anything left when there are indictments in the Georgia or Special Counsel cases.

He's probably going so hard now because he's trying to build Precedent. He might also think if he doesn't press now, he's going to be up the creek with the other indictments.bilateralrope wrote: ↑2023-04-14 09:56am If Jordan is going so hard against the hush money charges, I wonder if he will have anything left when there are indictments in the Georgia or Special Counsel cases.

So anyone expect 1) Trump to obey this order and 2) the court to punish him in any meaningful way if he doesn't?CNN
—
The New York judge handling Donald Trump’s criminal case approved a protective order on Monday that limits the former president’s ability to publicize information on social media related to evidence in the investigation.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office had submitted the protective order to restrict Trump’s ability to share information his attorneys receive in the discovery process in part because of Trump’s social media posts about Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and witnesses in the case.
Manhattan prosecutors have accused Trump of falsifying business records with the intent to conceal illegal conduct connected to his 2016 presidential campaign. The criminal charges stem from Bragg’s investigation into hush money payments, made during the 2016 campaign, to an adult film star who alleged an affair with Trump, which he denies.
Judge Juan Merchan signed off on the protective order, which states that evidence in the case turned over may not be shared or posted to “any news or social media platforms, including, but not limited, to Truth Social, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, Snapchat, or YouTube, without prior approval from the Court.”
Merchan’s ruling followed a hearing last week in which Trump’s attorneys and prosecutors from the district attorney’s office debated the details of the protective order, including the rules governing how much of material taken from the cell phones of witnesses, such as former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, could be viewed by Trump.
Trump’s attorneys had opposed the protective order, arguing that it infringed on Trump’s First Amendment rights as he makes another run for president in 2024.
Following last week’s hearing, Trump’s lawyers filed a motion to move the criminal case to federal court, arguing the crimes Trump is accused of committed are tied to his duties as president.
On Monday, the district attorney’s office filed a request for a conference to discuss the process for a US district judge to hear the motion. Trump’s lawyers did not oppose the request.
Trump pleaded not guilty last month to felony charges of falsifying business records with the intent to conceal illegal conduct connected to his 2016 presidential campaign. Merchan said he wants to have a trial in February or March of 2024.
In its filing Monday, the district attorney’s office noted that the defense team’s request to move the case to federal court did not pause the state court’s schedule.
“An early case conference to set a schedule and procedures for prompt resolution of the Notice of Removal will therefore minimize disruption to New York’s ‘traditional state authority’ to punish ‘local criminal activity,’” the Manhattan district attorney’s office wrote.
