Three US troops killed and up to 25 injured in drone drone attack in Jordan

Three US troops killed and up to 25 injured in drone drone attack in Jordan
The drone attack hit a base in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border.

US President Joe Biden said the attack was carried out by “radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq”.

“While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” Mr Biden said in a statement.

The identities of the military service members will be withheld for 24 hours until their next of kin have been informed, say US officials.

This story is being updated.
Biden says three US troops killed, 'many' wounded in drone attack by Iran-backed militia in Jordan
Three American service members were killed and “many” were wounded in a drone strike in Jordan, President Joe Biden said in a statement on Sunday.

He has attributed the attack to Iran-backed militia groups. US Central Command said 25 service members were injured the attack in addition to the three killed.

They were the first US' fatalities in months of strikes against American forces across the Middle East by Iranian-backed militias amid the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, increasing the risk of escalation.

Biden said the United States “will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner our choosing.”

The attack on Saturday night took place in northeast Jordan, near the border with Syria.

There was no immediate reaction from Jordan, a kingdom bordering Iraq, Israel, the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, Saudi Arabia and Syria.

US troops long have used Jordan, a close American ally, as a basing point - some 3,000 American troops typically are stationed in Jordan.

“While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” Biden said in his statement.

He said the US “will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism.”

Since Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip began, US troops in Iraq and Syria have faced drone and missile attacks on their bases.

The attack on Jordan marks the first targeting American troops in Jordan during the war.

Biden, who was in Columbia, South Carolina, was briefed on Sunday morning by Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, national security adviser Jake Sullivan and principal deputy national security adviser Jon Finer.

The president called it a “despicable and wholly unjust attack” and said the service members were “risking their own safety for the safety of their fellow Americans, and our allies and partners with whom we stand in the fight against terrorism. It is a fight we will not cease.”

It doesn't look like it at this moment. Every article attributes the attack to nonspecific Iran backed militants.

Let's hope that the retributive phase of things is more specific.

It's not like it takes a particularly large or sophisticated organisation to rig a drone to carry a nail bomb. It might not be an established group at all, just a couple of wannabes trying to get a foot in the door.

White House is 'not looking for a war with Iran' as US soldiers killed in drone strike identified
America is not seeking a war with Iran, but will also not rule out retaliation after a drone strike left three US soldiers dead in Jordan over the weekend.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby made the comments on Monday evening, saying Joe Biden's administration wants a "stable, secure, prosperous Middle East".

It comes as US President Joe Biden faces growing pressure to respond, with some Republicans - including Donald Trump - accusing him of being "ineffective, and weak".

Sunday's strike on an American military base - known as Tower 22 - in northeastern Jordan, has been blamed by the US on an Iran-backed group.

Iran's foreign ministry has denied any involvement in the strike, which also injured 34 people.

On Monday night, the Defense Department released the names of the three soldiers killed in the attack: Sgt. William Rivers, 46 of Carrollton, Georgia, Specialist Kennedy Sanders, 24 of Waycross, Georgia, and Specialist Breonna Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia.

The parents of the youngest victim, Sanders, said Monday she had volunteered to deploy, eager for a chance to see a different part of the world.

“She was loved. She didn’t have any enemies. All the time you saw her smiling,” her father, Shawn Sanders, said in an interview. “This is somebody who was just living life, enjoying life at a young age, working toward a career.”

They were all assigned to the 718th Engineer Company, a Pentagon spokesperson said.

In a joint press conference with Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday evening, US Secretary of State said America will "respond decisively to any aggression and we will hold responsible the people who attacked our troops.

"We will do so at a time and place of our choosing," he added.

In a warning to "anyone looking to take advantage of conflict in the Middle East", Blinken said: "Don't do it".

Speaking on what the US response could be, Blinken said: " it could well be multi-levelled, it could come in stages, and it could well be sustained over time".

The attack that forces Biden to make a decision that may change the Middle East
The three deaths are the first US fatalities to emerge from months of strikes by Iranian proxy groups against American forces across the Middle East.

There have been more than 150 militia attacks on US forces in the region since proscribed terror group Hamas launched its surprise attack into southern Israel on October 7.

Mr Biden has pledged the United States "will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner [of] our choosing".

Two US officials have claimed the drone which caused the strike could have been confused with an American drone returning to Tower 22.

The officials told The Wall Street Journal, under the condition of anonymity, that a preliminary report had suggested as the enemy drone was flying in at a low altitude, a US drone was returning to the base and may have been let pass by mistake.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has urged Iran to "de-escalate tensions", whilst reiterating British support for the US.

He told broadcasters: "We absolutely condemn what has happened over the past couple of days.

"My thoughts are with all of those impacted, those who lost their lives, their families and those that are injured."

Sir Keir Starmer said those behind the drone strike should be "held to account", but expressed fears about the febrile situation widening.

"I am concerned about the possibility of escalation of an already dangerous situation in the Middle East," the Labour leader said

"So we have to see this in that context and do everything that we can to ensure there isn't escalation of the conflict, and on the contrary, that we find ways to bring this conflict to the immediate end."

Iranian-backed militias have said that their strikes are in retaliation for Washington's support for Israel in its war against Hamas.

America in recent months has hit targets in Iraq, Syria and Yemen in response to attacks on its forces, and to diminish the threats from Iranian-backed Houthi rebels to commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

US troops have long used Jordan, a kingdom bordering Iraq, Israel, the Palestinian territory of the occupied West Bank, Saudi Arabia and Syria, as a basing point. Some 3,000 American troops typically are stationed across Jordan.

Tower 22 sits near the demilitarised zone on the border between Jordan and Syria, and is only six miles away from the Iraqi border.

U.S. retaliatory 'campain' following Jordan strike to last 'weeks', Iran's facilities among targets
The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is preparing an operation in response to a recent attack by militants on an American base in Jordan, as a result of which three servicemen were killed. Such a campaign can last several weeks, reports NBC News.

According to US officials in a conversation with journalists, Washington is planning retaliatory attacks - a “campaign” against Iran-backed militants that could last “weeks.”

Targets are expected to include Iranian facilities outside the country, and the campaign will include both strikes and cyber operations.

It is also noted that Biden has not yet identified a complete list of targets for attacks.

However, Iran has already warned that it will give a decisive response to any attack on its territory or actions to the detriment of Tehran's interests. This statement was made after the American president spoke about the decision to take revenge for the drone strike on the U.S. base in Jordan, which killed three American servicemen.

On January 28, in the northeast of Jordan, near the border with Syria, a drone attacked the American military base Tower 22. According to the Pentagon, more than 40 American soldiers were injured as a result of this attack.

Also, the Ministry of Defense of the United States noted that, according to preliminary data, the Kataib Hezbollah group, which is supported by Iran, was involved in the attack.

The head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, threatened to respond to the attack "at a time and place of our (American - ed.) choosing." And U.S. President Joe Biden said that Iran was responsible for this attack. The American leader noted that he had already decided on countermeasures.

Meanwhile, yesterday, the Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah, backed by Iran, announced the suspension of all its military operations against U.S. forces in the Middle East, allegedly to prevent escalation after the attack in Jordan.

They can say whether they have picked targets, without specifying what those targets are going to be. Speculation is that it's going to be a tit-for-tat sort of response- since it was an attack on a USA target not located on US soil, the counterattack is going to be on Iranian targets not on Iranian soil.

Apologies.

Iran is beating their chest daring the US to attack them on their own soil promising great retribution if it happens

US has launched a wave pf airstrikes in Iraq and Syria.
US airstrikes have targeted dozens of sites in Iraq and Syria in retaliation to a drone attack that killed three American soldiers last weekend.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had hit 85 targets on Friday night, including "command and control operations centers, intelligence centers, rockets, and missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicle storages".

A statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, said that the action was aimed against "Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups".

The action comes hours after the bodies of the three American soldiers killed in Jordan last Sunday were returned to the US.

Islamic Resistance - a coalition of Iranian-backed militias in Iraq - has been blamed by the US for the Jordan drone attack.

Iran has denied it was behind the Jordan strike.

US officials have previously said the military would launch a "tiered response" and not a single strike.

The US has plenty of ammo and lots of shiny guns to shoot it.

I think one of the intended messages here was "We can reach out and punch you wherever you are and you can't do a damn thing to stop us. We don't care if you know we're coming, it doesn't matter because you can't stop us." But hey, I'm no expert and I'm not going to predict how the other side perceives this, they'll have their own take.

That will entirely depend on if the US hit anything of value, and what the cost to benefit ratio was of said strike.

The U.S. targets Iranian proxies for a second day in a row
February 3, 2024, 5:21 PM ET

By
NPR Washington Desk

The U.S. struck Iranian-linked targets in the Middle East for a second consecutive day Saturday.

The U.S. and allies hit 36 Houthi targets at 13 locations in Yemen, the Pentagon said Saturday. On Friday, the U.S. struck facilities in Iraq and Syria, as part of a broader campaign that U.S officials say is in retaliation for a drone attack that killed three American soldiers. The U.S. says it struck Iran-backed proxies in each country.

The Pentagon said the U.K., Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and New Zealand were involved in Saturday's strikes against Houthi targets, saying they were in response to Houthi attacks targeting international shipping vessels.

The current round of U.S. strikes is more extensive and deadly than those from the previous few months.

It comes in response to a drone attack on a U.S. support base in Jordan on Jan. 28 that killed three Army Reserve soldiers. An Iranian-backed militia group claimed responsibility for the attack. It was the highest death toll of U.S. troops in the Middle East in at least a decade.

Iranian-backed militias have mounted more than 165 drone, missile and rocket attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria since the Israel-Hamas war began in October.

These latest strikes come on the same day that U.S. military officials say U.S. forces destroyed six Houthi anti-ship cruise missiles in Yemen in "self-defense," saying that the missiles were to be used against ships in the Red Sea.

U.S. and British forces have carried out multiple attacks against Houthi military facilities, as the Iranian-backed group has continued to target commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Iran claims US airstrikes are a Strategic Mistake
Iran's foreign ministry said the strikes on Iraq and Syria "will have no result other than intensifying tensions and instability in the region".
Now, yes, Iraq and Syria are a little upset that the US is dropping bombs in their borders, even tho the targets are Iran-baked militia. The US is so far avoiding striking within Iranian borders, but are most definitely hitting their proxies.
