ROTJ question
Has anyone ever brought up the flamming TIE fighter that crashes into the bridge section of a Star Destroyer in ROTJ? First off, how does that happen in space?
And second, the TIE collides with the bridge, but the bridge completely no-sells. There's no apparent damage at all. Ideas? Comments?

I thought that's what it probably was, something to do with atomsphere. But I wasn't sure.Ted C wrote:

Can someone get some screen shots of this up? Because it looked to me like a direct impact. Unless of course these are the variety that are "hull-huggers"
The shields held.

Re: ROTJ question
IIRC events in the movies show that SW shields are hull-hugging, like asteroid scene in TESB.Lord_Xerxes wrote:Can someone get some screen shots of this up? Because it looked to me like a direct impact. Unless of course these are the variety that are "hull-huggers"

I think with the prequels out, we've seen both variety of shielding.

Planetary shields (TESB, ROTJ, TPM) shouldn't be hull hugging, as they need to protect a large area.Lord_Xerxes wrote:I think with the prequels out, we've seen both variety of shielding.
Droidekas may be forced to use the bubble-effect shield because it requires less power than the hull-hugging effect, given the Droidekas small generator. Note the droids arms most prominently. Most starfighters don't have any external moving parts, limiting the need to move the shield for them, and capships have huge genrators anyways, but the Droideka-again given its smaller generator-would have difficulty re-adjusting the shields every second while its arms move back and forth.

In the OT pretty much all shields are hull-hugging. In the prequels, a few like the Naboo Starfighter and the Droidekas have bubble shields.
When the Falcon is hit when running away from the Destroyer (they obviously hit the shields, or he'd be vaporized) there's no visible shield away from the hull, it looks like it hits the ship and rocks it real bad.

THe N-1 had hull-hugging shields.Slartibartfast wrote:In the OT pretty much all shields are hull-hugging. In the prequels, a few like the Naboo Starfighter and the Droidekas have bubble shields.

And what the heck are you saying in that second one??? If your reffering to the lack of a visible shield, its because in space shields have no air particles to react to (giving in atmosphere shields there blue glow), thus they remain invisible.
Interestingly, the N-is shields-even in an atmosphere, fail to shimmer when hit, even though Anakins ship was getting shot at in the TradeFed ships hangar.

Now a Y-Wing impacted much earlier in the battle.

Yes, it never rammed into the tower.Mad wrote:You mean the destroyed TIE from this scene? It was destroyed by incoming Rebel fire, not ramming into the tower.
A rebel fighter set it on flames and a second later it blown up.

Meh, i was watch the movie the other day, and I thought I saw it collide. Even in those pictures it's pretty close. That laser blast isn't anywhere near it, and you can see in the second picture where the laser blast hit the tower (unless that's debris)

The TIE isn't nearly close enough. Look at the small X-wing in that picture. And that X-wing is still in front of the tower, though pretty far from the TIE. The laser blast you see is from said X-wing. The bolts that destroyed the TIE appeared to come from the Mon Cal in the background, and are not visible in either of the frames my image shows. (And, yes, the X-wing's lasers hit the tower. Two were fired before that final shot, creating the white flash seen on the left frame.)Lord_Xerxes wrote:Meh, i was watch the movie the other day, and I thought I saw it collide. Yep. And it created a pretty big flash when it hit, too.Cal Wright wrote:Now a Y-Wing impacted much earlier in the battle.

The fuel used by Star wars Fighters and small craft is heavy metals and radioactive gases. I dont think where really talking about normal combustion.Lord_Xerxes wrote:Has anyone ever brought up the flamming TIE fighter that crashes into the bridge section of a Star Destroyer in ROTJ?
