Being a younger country, Canada got a fairly good deal out of the American Revolution too:
Canadian politics can be generally summed up as looking at what Americans are up to, and trying to avoid that.
What I found interesting is that Canada was largely founded by Loyalists and Quebecois who were content with the status quo… a.k.a. what we could call the conservatives in North American society at the time. America was the “Great Experiment” in republicanism and liberalism, at least compared to the European monarchs at the time. Yet it seems these days that Canada is generally the more progressive country, whether it comes to universal healthcare, LGBT rights, abortion, marijuana use etc. What gives?

I wasn't trying to launch a personal attack on your marksmanship, just sayin' in general we've got a certain, "Fuck it, the answer is guns!" mentality around these parts. A friend of mine in high school did almost as well as I did on the SATs. West Point kept calling him, trying to recruit him. He was utterly blind from birth. Man can't see things at all. He told them this. And they kept calling him. One day, we were doing mad bong hits and I convinced him to tell them off definitively. So he was on the phone like, "Yes, I want to serve my country. Hell, yeah I do. Give me a rifle and a dog and throw me out of an airplane! I'll blow away anything that moves!"

I just rewatch the speech from Independence Day, and not for the first time think it's applicable to the situation in Ukraine. Their independence day is the 24th of August, FYI.
