Why did Dooku tell Obi- Wan about Palpatine?

I was rattling about this idea earlier, all I could come up with was that Dooku did it so that the Jedi would start to either distance themselves from him or even publically oppose them, thus making it easier to brand them as traitors or something.

Does anyone have any other interpretations of this?

He's trying to turn him to have his own apprentice to usurp Palpatine.

I thought Dooku only mentioned Sideous, not Palpatine...

Dooku never mentioned Palpatine. Otherwise the Jedi would have confronted Palpatine about it before the Imperial March. Of course, it's common knowledge that Palpatine is Sidious, so . . .

My guess is that Dooku wanted to stir up the Jedi. If they go around accusing Senators, they'll simply turn the Senate against them, especially with the enemies mentioned when Yoda and Windu talked about their diminishing abilities.

Like the devil he is, he's telling the truth (or a partial truth) in order to create mistrust.

After all, if he's a Jedi you can trust him, so what he said is true... but if he betrayed the order, he's a liar and you can't trust him (note Yoda's line about this).

So in other words... he can tell you what happened and you won't believe him, so the secret is safe.

Plus, from a dramatic viewpoint, it gives you a tiny bit of doubt as to whether or not Dooku is really a bad guy after all (though its not a very strong one). After all, he's reporting the reason the Viceroy came to him for help (note that nobody will trust the Trade Federation guys to tell the truth either, considering their ruined reputation in TPM).

Since the Trade Federation Viceroy and everyone else doesn't know about the plot and Palpatine's dual role (other than the audience and the sith themselves), it is in character for him to say this.

Just to throw the Jedi off and not have them focus on finding out every thing the Sepratists are doing ie: Death Star design. And make them focus on the Senate for this unknown Phantom that controls the Senate. In all essence confuse them a little.

He didn't, he told Obi about Sidious, never mentioned Palpatine. Obi never learned the true identity of the Sith in the senate, and after all, the council didn't even buy it. Dooku told him abou Sidious because he wanted Obi to join him, but it wasn't necessary for him to know that Sidious was runing both sides, just as the Trade federation and the other guys didn't know.

The reason he spilled the beans was to make the Jedi look over their shoulders and keep them off balance. If they are forced to guard themselves on two fronts, the the Jedi will collasp on themselves.

Simple to mess with his head and if he did believe it and reported it to Yoda and Windu thy may take action against Palpatine that would let him purge the Jedi at will

Plus, if the Jedi somehow found out it was true, they would think they themselves where fighting the wrong ones. It puts them in a bad situation no matter if they find out it's true or not.

Possible reasons:

1) A genuine effort to try to subvert Obi-Wan. If Obi-Wan could be turned to work with the Separatists, it would help destabilize the Republic and might create tension and confusion within the Jedi Order. This is the most likely reason, since Dooku apparently made a good-faith effort to kill Obi-Wan after Obi-Wan refused to join the Separatists.

2) An effort to betray Palpatine. Sith are driven by self-interest and lust for power; why would Count Dooku be an exception. Without openly betraying Palpatine, he has given the Jedi a clue that might lead to Palpatine's defeat. With the Republic in disarray because of the loss of the Supreme Chancellor and Dooku in charge of

3) An effort to create confusion and dissent in the Jedi Order. With knowledge of a traitor close to the Senate, the Jedi would divert resources to locating that traitor, easing the pressure on Dooku's Separatist allies.

There's no question that Dooku has too much ambition for his health. I don't find it at all hard to believe that he hopes to eventually subvert Sidious ("I've become more powerful than any Jedi. Even you.") and is in the market for a protégé, like his grand-padawan, Obi-Wan.

I assume that when Anakin becomes Darth Vader, he'll collect payback plus interest from Dooku for the incident with his arm, however.

By spreading mistrust with the Jedi for the Senate, Dooku also can create a rift that will make it easier for Palpatine to eventually turn the Senate against the Jedi.

I see three potential outcomes from Tyrannus' viewpoint:

1) They take down Palpatine. Horrendously unlikely. The Jedi have bought into trusting him hook, line, and and sinker. The Jedi believe he's an ally, if still a politician. But even if they do, the Jedi cannot easily do something about it. God alone knows what would happen if they attacked and killed a Chancellor! From Tyrannus' view, this would weaken the Republic and allow him to take over, anyway.

2) They begin watching Senators and powerbrokers all over. Weakens the Republic and strengthens Palpatine.

3) They assume he's lying. They ignore the other possibility (the truth). Palpatine wins.

Basically, no matter what happens, Palpatine and Tyrannus win. palpatine has been very good about setting up situations where he wins no matter what.

There is the possibility that he just wanted to off Palpatine because he had plans too evil. The dark side is more about wanting total power than being evil, is it not?

I think it's about evil, and part of being evil is lust for power.

I just thought of something.

We all know that when Anakin becomes Darth Vader he adopts a cloak and a boomingly authoratative voice through a vocal processor. Could Anakin have been inspired to imitate Darth Tyrannus? Cloak, check. Deep voice, check. This certainly ties in with the speculations that Darth Tyrannus will at least attempt to make Anakin his padawan in Ep3
