just before 10:00 AM another phone report from Arnot. Cyanide and Mustard agents in high concentrations in the Euphrates.
A Reverse Osmosis unit with the Marines was filtering the water out to purify it. In the process, they tested the water before putting it into the filters. Found large concentrations of cyanide and mustard agents. Arnot is getting this from the regimental commander and intelligence officer. Belief is that it was done deliberately to poison the Marines, rather than an attempt to get rid of it. Apparently the agents are so small that they would not be stopped by the reverse osmosis filters, so this is why they've been testing.
[If this is the case, then downsteam water supplies for the civilians will now be endangered]

Distillation would probably work (it's always been more effective than RO), but that takes a lot of power. And a lot of time.MKSheppard wrote:Belief is that it was done deliberately to poison the Marines, rather than an attempt to get rid of it. Ollie North talked about a marine that evidently everyone
thought was resting but took a bullet to the gut and just sat
there for a good time...ollie sez he'll be ok
He said the wounded leatherneck was waiting, even tho he
was gut shot, (they didn't know it, thought he was hit in
the hand)he was waiting because "others were wounded
worse than me".
Gotta love those Marines.
Ollie also reported that their helicopter took small arms fire
which hit a fuel line. They had to land and repair it while
under fire. Gunnery seargent repaired it with a piece of
heater hose and they got out of there.

U.S. forces move to center of Baghdad
Friday, April 4, 2003
CAMP AS SALIYAH, Qatar (AP) - Coalition troops were near the center of Baghdad on Saturday, a U.S. Central Command spokesman said.
"As of this morning, coalition forces are actually in the city of Baghdad," said Navy Capt. Frank Thorp. "As we moved into the city, we saw sporatic fighting, we've actually moved through the republican guard divisions to pretty much the center of the city."
"We have substantial forces now moving into the city," he said.
Thorp said the best way to classify the situation in the city is that it was under control despite sporadic fighting.
"We'll continue to operate where we find opportunities to move forward, we'll move forward," he said. "Its been a steady deliberate pace as we move forward."
He declined to be specific on how many troops were moving in the city, describing the numbers as "substantial."
But he said that elements of the 1st Marines had penetrated the Al Nida division of the Republican Guard moving in the vicinity of Baghdad.
"We have reports of engaging the special Republican Guard in a limited basis, and as we move into the city," Thorp said.

SUWAYRAH, Iraq (AP) - U.S. Army soldiers Saturday captured the headquarters of the Republican Guard's Medina Division in this town about 35 miles southeast of Baghdad.
Two tank companies and an infantry company of the 3rd Infantry Division rolled through the headquarters unopposed and quickly took over the entire base. It appeared that the Republican Guard defenses had completely collapsed.
Outside the base on a three-mile stretch of road were hundreds of bunkers and foxholes and dozens of artillery pieces, antiaircraft guns, tanks, and armored personnel carriers.
All of them had been abandoned by Iraqi troops. No troops could be seen.
The tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles used their main guns to destroy the military vehicles along the route.

Well this may be the endgame now. This could go amazingly well if the Republican guard is crushed and completly has no will to fight *AND* if the US doesn't stuff up the PR with the locals and makes a good impression on the people.
So far the talk of street by street fighting has faded away. A LONG and LOUD rumble of a heavy tank collum may well do that. Its all of one thing to wave you 47 in the air screaming about how you will fight for Saddam yada yada. Then seeing this massive thing taking up three lanes of a highway as a rather BIG f*#(ing gun slowly tracks back and forth....well....
