How does one recover lost memory from amnesia without the aid of a psychiatrist?

For the most part what happens is triggers such as sounds, tastes, and sights will literaly trigger a memory. Psychiatrists attempt to provide influence to get the triggers to occure as soon as possible, but they can't always do it. Depending on the severity of the amnesia the individual might regain their memory in leaps and bounds because of abundant sources for triggers (family, friends, favorite items, etc...) while other people are so deep they are lucky to get a few fragments for the rest of their lives. A psychiatrist doesn't really fix their memory so much as speed along the trigger process.

What was the cause of this amnesia?

Bluntforce/concussion/stroke=Brain damage?

Traumatic experience? (Scare, hurt/betrayal/abuse)

Brain damage sometimes NEVER comes back. Where the neural net is damaged, is just as important as how much damage there is.
An MRI, or PET scan is needed.
Mental exercises, that use similar pathways is the best non professional treatment. Jigsaw puzzles are good all around therapy. Clay sculpure is good too. Any activity that uses 2 or more different skill sets at the same time are good.

Traumatic experience is even trickier. Way too many variables. Time is the best non professional therapy. The same therapy for brain damage works, but directed awareness exercises are better, under professional direction.

Sometimes a change in perspective is all that it takes to turn a situation that seemed to much to cope with, at the time, into water under the bridge.
Hmmmmmm.
